We knew that there was a certain kind of interest in Whale among a genre crowd.

To me, fantasy has always been the genre of escape, science fiction the genre of ideas. So if you can escape and have a little idea as well, maybe you have some kind of a cross-breed between the two.

We Are Jonah
And the round old fox, stepped up to make his speech
His ship was on the rocks, and rescue out of reach
Spotlit he stood, said what he thought he should
Half the crowd did laugh, though there was no joke
And soon the other half were swallowed up in smoke
A robin on the wing, could be heard to sing, the strangest thing
Grandma, we are jonah
Rolling along in the teeth of a whale
Then the plane did land, for some it did not crash
From it emerged a man, in trainers and moustache
Down he laid his load, upon the heated road
Then the road did part, and the tar did melt
He loosened up his heart, he tightened up his belt
Like a piece of string, then he began to sing, like a pearly king
Grandma, we are jonah
Rolling along in the teeth of a whale
Then the scene did shift, to a sun kissed sea
There was montgomery clift, jonah, the whale and me
As the sun it set, montgomery placed his bet
Then the whale did yawn, and fell asleep in four
From dusk till dawn, you shoul have heard him snore
From tierra-del-fuego, to the alaskan snows... there she blows!
Grandma, we are jonah
Rolling along in the teeth of a whale
My dear old grandma, we are jonah
Rolling along in the teeth of a whale
Grandma
We are jonah, rolling along in the teeth of a whale

I'm a working actor so I never really pick a film because of a genre, and I don't really turn them down because of genre. Anything that's unlike the picture I just finished is always more interesting.

Dont Kill The Whale
Youre first Im last
Youre thirst Im asked to justify
Killing our last heaven beast
Dont hunt the whale
In beauty vision
Do we offer much
If we reason with destiny, gonna lose our touch
Dont kill the whale
Rejoice they sing
They worship their own space
In a moment of love, they will die for their grace
Dont kill the whale
If time will allow
We will judge all who came
In the wake of our new age to stand for the frail
Dont kill the whale
Cetacei....

I'm an outdoorsman kind of person, so I don't like the buzz of the crowd, crowd, crowd and all that so much. I mean I don't mind it, but I don't seek it out.

Whale Song
Can you hear the Whale Song resonating deep?
Can you hear that deep slow hum within your mind asleep?
Can you understand the Whale Song and feel its undulating tones
Vibrating through our bodies within our flesh and bone?
Why is it that the Whale Song entrances us in life
And let's us glimpse a real-ness that needs not ears nor even eyes?
Maybe it's that the Whale Song makes us feel part of this earth
In a way that seems to be obscured in the life that follows birth.

Readers respond to every genre intensely, if it's a genre that appeals to them. Again, who can say why anyone enjoys horror and dark fantasy? If I can't answer the question for myself, I wouldn't dream of trying to answer it for others.

Pay You Back With Interest
(clarke / hicks / nash)
Too many people need me
Ive got so much, so much to do
But when my travelling is over
Ill pay you back with interest
Ill pay you back with interest
It seems unfair to leave you
And sell myself the way I do
But when my wandering is over
Ill pay you back with interest
Ill pay you back with interest
Most of my life Ive been moving
And when I tire out Ill come home to you
But until then Ill be waiting
Ill pay you back with interest
Ill pay you back with interest
How cold is my room, (how cold is my room)
Without your love beside me
We look at the same old moon (looking at the moon)
But youre not here beside me
Ill pay you back with interest
Ill pay you back with interest
Break
Too many people need me
Ive got so much, so much to do
But when my travelling is over
Ill pay you back with interest
Ill pay you back with interest

Focus in on the genre you want to write, and read books in that genre. A LOT of books by a variety of authors. And read with questions in your mind.

Malaria
I got this inclination to find
some thing that wasn’t lost.
I knew not what it looked like,
but to find it I knew I must.
I discussed it with my colleagues
and rightly so they thought me mad.
But the feeling was overwhelming
and was the first of its kind I’ve had.
I visited museums and libraries,
researched chronicles and books.
Diligently viewed my surroundings
leaving nothing overlooked.
A year passed and I lost interest,
and found something else to do.
Soon afterwards I fell off a ladder
and laid unconscious on ward two.
Whilst dreaming dreams of nonsense
the mind rediscovered my quest.
It searched the most ambiguous places
the abstract, surreal, and the rest.
I travelled the continent of Asia
by elephant, horse and camel.
Walked across the sands of the Gobi
guided by a one eyed owl.
From the sky I fell into the ocean
and was rescued by a whale.
It left me on the beach at Cairns,
so I followed an Aussie trail.
I headed west across country
and camped at Alice Springs.
Flew to Cairo by cargo plane
and suffered from bites and stings.
In hospital I was laid up with malaria
and drifted very close to death.
It was then that I regained consciousness
with the answer on my breath.
Now you may find this story unlikely
and sometimes I think so too.
The doctors say that my memory is patchy
and malaria can do that to you.

You want to play another kind of character in another genre, and it's been something I've been trying to do if I can in the career so far, and it's something I hope to continue because it's interesting to me and you get to do different things as an actor.

Accepting Evolution
there is this feeling that you are slimy
and prickly and
floating on the water like a whale
and you hide back to the depths
making signals if there are still other whales
out there
and yes, i could have been once a whale
or was i a shark.
