He would catapult you forward, and that was his intention with the Jazz Messengers. He would take young people with a potential and help them develop a voice as a player and as a writer.

Catapult
Oohhh, we were little boys
Oohhh, we were little girls
Its nine oclock, dont try to turn it off
Cowered in a hole, ugly mouth. question:
Did we miss anything? did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything? did we miss anything?
Catapult. catapult. catapult. catapult.
Oohhh, we were little boys
Oohhh, we were little girls
Its nine oclock, dont try to turn it off
Cowered in a hole, ugly mouth.
We in step, in hand, your mother remembers this.
Hear the howl of the road, a question:
Did we miss anything? did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything? did we miss anything?
Catapult. catapult. catapult. catapult.
Porch could be darker. much could be darker.
Catapult. catapult. catapult. catapult.

I'm basically a cocktail jazz kind of pianist. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a very good keyboard player. People think I think I'm good. I think I'm a very poor piano player.

I always hated jazz guitar. I loved jazz saxophone but I hated jazz guitar. If I would buy an organ trio record I would make sure I'd buy one that did not have a guitar player on it. The sound was awful!

I was considered as a jazz man rather than as a blues player. There were no blues players-you played one sort of jazz of another sort of jazz.

If you're a singer you lose your voice. A baseball player loses his arm. A writer gets more knowledge, and if he's good, the older he gets, the better he writes.

Those Then Who Had Nothing
Not only were they given the keys and the tools,
With delivered messengers...
Giving them the answers to the prayers,
They...
With absolutely nothing but their biases,
Turned their backs away.
Not one of the messengers drove a Mercedes.
Not one was wearing a tailored silk suit.
Not one of the messengers had been a social butterfly.
And not one had a Doctorate's degree to be declared...
Worthy of giving attention.
So,
The messengers were sent away.
And today,
Those then who had nothing...
Have a lot less!

I have made a film about jazz that tries to look through jazz to see what it tells us about who we are as a people. I think that jazz is a spectacularly accurate model of democracy and a kind of look into our redemptive future possibilities.

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It's based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand
His son is working for the Daily Mail
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
Paperback writer
It's a thousand pages, give or take a few
I'll be writing more in a week or two
I can make it longer if you like the style
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
If you really like it you can have the rights
It could make a million for you overnight
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer

I think when you saw this year's playoffs, Miami and Detroit have a pretty fierce rivalry now. Also, the Suns and San Antonio look like they're starting to develop something there. I look forward to seeing those rivalries continue and develop.

Victor Should Have Been A Jazz Musician
I went to a concert, to see nina, simone,
The concert was over, there was still a band playing, the rap up,
The booguh played with his hands, I close my eyes, and look at him,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
I said to myself, victor should have been a jazz musician,
I looked at his face, and I saw victor, looked at his smile, and I saw victor,
I looked at his hair, and thought,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
And the people dancing on the floor, dancing on the floor, were so high,
You should have seen victor smile, you should have seen victor smile,
As they danced all the while all around on the floor, and he laughed,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
Oh, victor should have been a jazz musician,
He was playing so nice, the jazz musician,
Ah, ah,
Hes living in a fast beat, in a city thats hot,
Telling all the latinos and puerto ricans, victor seems happy, but he doesnt even know himself, hes gotta look inside to know his first love,
Victor was a jazz musician, he was playing so nice, victor was a jazz musician, (? ) victor was a jazz musician,
Victor loves his music, he loves his music, somewhere, he plays his music, somewhere,
Victor is a jazz musician,
Jazz.

Revealed To Make Known
What are you doing?
You can't do that.
'What do you mean,
What am I doing?
I am holding myself accountable,
For my own actions.'
But...
What about the people?
'What about the people? '
What will they do now?
They are accustomed to finding fault.
And blaming with accusations,
Those who normally deny any participation...
In creating to initiate forward movements they have made.
What do you expect me to say to them?
Since now I find myself in a unique situation.
'Say something like...
You people are plucking on my last nerve.'
But then they will turn on me,
Because they will feel offended by the message.
'Great!
Now you know why others are reluctant,
To take the responsibility to become messengers.
And think of it this way...
You will not have to question,
Whether or not you have gotten their undivided attention.
People do not keep that a secret,
To be revealed to make known.'

Can A Player Find A Soul Mate?
I asked a guy yesterday,
'Will you be a player in your golden days? '
He said, 'Once a player always a player
I guess that is what I will be'
he sounded for sure at least he
was honest with me.
I said 'Don't you want to find your Soul Mate?
He says, it doesn't matter anymore I'm having fun,
I'm still young, my dating life has just begun.
I guess if he is happy and content
maybe he will never have regrets.

Enter Jazz
In the past few weeks
(1995, I think)
A whole field of music
Has knocked on my door.
Jazz has made my acquaintance.
Jazz who has always before
Seemed so stale, so staid,
So stuck in a groove
Sometime back in the thirties,
Jazz now emerges
As the most delightful companion.
I first noticed
My new friend
On the Voice of America,
A sudden lightness of spirit
Lighting up my room
Through the transistor radio.
Then Nancy, Carolyn's mum in Ferny Creek,
Turned out to be a jazz fan
With a collection of cassettes,
And I abandoned myself
To jazz's invitation
To dance,
Easy, free-flowing steps
Up and down
The lounge-room carpet.
Last night
The friendship firmed further:
In the E.G. Guide
Was listed a jazz trio
Which they claimed could be heard
At the Albert Park Hotel
Not far away.
The trio swelled to seven or eight musicians
As the evening unfolded
And I drank in the rhythms
Of what a chat with their apparent leader, Bill,
Revealed was traditional jazz
In the Chicago style,
So sweet, so gentle, so softly swinging.
Jazz took my arm
And smiled.
I have a new friend.
