Over the past several years, all of us as Canadians, and as members of the North American cultural and economic environment, have been to a greater or lesser extent party to a significant attitudinal change towards our culture.

That a society controls, to a greater or lesser extent, the behavior of its members is a universal; but the methods, the particulars of that control, vary from one culture to another.

But most Canadians have recognized to a greater or lesser extent that despite much of the so-called progress of the affluent society, essential ingredients to a meaningful life seem to be either entirely lacking, or at best, difficult to grasp.

And this fear that US models are replacing everything else now spills over from the sphere of culture into our two remaining categories: for this process is clearly, at one level, the result of economic domination - of local cultural industries closed down by American rivals.

No Compulsory Voting In Canada
Canadian politicians can’t have an independent thought,
Locked into some party agenda or they could be distraught,
But if they are real careful they could get a Senate appointment,
And then there is no need for any election disappointment.
Canadians don’t elect their prime ministers by their names,
It’s their party friends that elect them with hidden party aims,
Where no one heard of recall or proportional representation,
No set-date elections, which they avoid without explanation.
And one could get an appointment to the UN in NY,
Banned from their Security Council but good for years of pork,
They like the fact that only half Canadians manage to vote,
Compulsory voting is something they will never promote.

I presume that nobody will deny the positive aspects of the North American cultural world. These are well known to all. But these aspects do not make one forget the disastrous effects of the industrial and commercial process of 'cultural lamination' that the USA is perpetrating on the planet.

Nothing Is Allowed To Change
No propositions, referendums or judicial reviews,
Never allowed plebiscites so we never get much to choose,
Therefore less than half Canadians even bother to vote,
And our politicians tend to think this is great, as they gloat.
If politicians refuse to see problems; there’s no need to fix,
They are locked into their secret party agenda and tricks,
It is not politically correct to mention any change,
No recall or referendums will ever be arranged.
And how dare you even think outside the box,
Ideas like that might cause a political party shock,
And if you keep that up they may even close down the Internet,
Less than half Canadians vote so no one can torment.

Managing change
Managing change
Change is inevitable. But how well we manage changes. Often we find it difficult to cope with the change and waste our precious time in pondering over the pleasantries of the past.
We must understand, why at all a change occurred. Necessity, scarce
resources, new environment, updated facilities, etc. bring out changes.
We step in a changed environ without even a hint of the same. The best advice would be to ever be prepared for changes, favourable or otherwise. Let wisdom descend on us to appreciate and enjoy the ever changing colours of the people, places and others of this living space.
Managing change involves assessing the extent and nature of the change. It is essential to assess the gains and losses of a change, so that we get a balance. We need also to know the beneficiaries of a change and others, who may lose some privileges.
We should have the tact to monitor the impact of the change so that
unacceptable deviations are rectified then and there, by effectively
controlling the impact of the change.
We need also the courage to accept the change, even if the impact of a change is uncomfortable

Mystic Chord
Memory, whose mystic chord
suggests existence of the Lord,
draws some to Gustav's music, Mahler,
many others to Kabbalah,
and even when agnostic, mystics
responsive to Pascal’s statistics,
find Leon’s Moses, sephirotic,
believable, because erotic.
Castilian writings that they dust off
appeal to me far less than Gustav.
Who’s right we may find out in olam
haba, but surely not from Scholem.
Richard Bernstein reviews “American Culture, American Tastes: Social Tastes: Social Changes and the 20th Century, ” by Michael Kammen (Alfred A. Knopf) (“Lowbrow? Highbrow? Culture Raises an Eyebrow, ' the NYT, August 25,1999) . Kammen, the author of 'Mystic Chords of Memory, ” pointing out that since the dominant role of television around 1960 cultural stratification and the existence of distinct brow levels have become blurred where they haven't been overtly blended. He traces the decline of traditional cultural authority and its eclipse by mass culture: “The entrepreneurial power of commerce totally crushed the recommendations of such cultural authorities as John Crosby, Jack Gould and Gilbert Seldes–– prominent television critics who pleaded for diversity.”

Access To Information
Big Brother federal politicians want to hide all their stuff,
They feel that their constituents already know enough,
They are committed to their party line no matter what,
So if it’s not in the party agenda it’s not worth a lot.
And the Access To Information Act is a complete farce,
Though the information that politicians have is very sparse,
No binding referendums or recalls are ever allowed,
You can’t change things or vote for a senator so feel proud.
Proportional representation is banned for first-past-the-post,
Even though the opposition had more votes to count and boast,
This is the reason why less than half Canadians vote,
Something wrong with the system while the first-past-the-post gloat.

Lazyman's Wise Prayer
LAZYMAN'S WISE PRAYER
If to that extent RICH indeed
I need not have to toil hard instead
If to that extent SHREWD indeed
I would have skipped some years instead
If to that extent BRAVE indeed
I could'nt have lost on more counts instead
If to that extent READY indeed
I should'nt have to repent now instead
If to that extent FOUGHT indeed
I ought to have won fast instead
If to that extent all B A D indeed
Better I should'nt have the right to live instead

Our institute's agenda is relatively simple. We study the relationship between social-economic change and culture. By culture we mean beliefs, values and lifestyles. We cover a broad range of issues, and we work very internationally.

The problem that faces our country today, the last 30 years we have lived off the future, and the bill is coming due. So there cannot be anything that is not put on the table. There will not be one American that will not be called to sacrifice. Those that are more well-to-do will be called to sacrifice to a greater extent.
