The Elevator
I was on the ground floor
and I wanted level five.
I pressed the call button
and waited for it to arrive.
It arrived with no one in it,
so I entered and closed the door.
It took its time to get going,
then slowed for the next floor.
The doors hesitated then opened,
but no one was there,
but I definitely felt a presence
and a disturbance in the air.
I was standing still and anxious
when the lift shook from side to side.
The doors closed and up it went to three
where the doors opened wide.
Again no one was there waiting,
but I felt someone get in.
Movement in the air and floor
was most unsettling.
I was overwhelmed and nervous
as it approached level four.
It stopped, but no one was waiting,
just like the stops before.
The elevator paused for a second
and I swear someone got in.
I was certain that I heard whispering
as the elevator set off again.
The space felt uncomfortably eerie
cold, but very much alive.
The rotten egg smell made me sickly,
as we went passed level five.
The light suddenly turned to darkness,
and I could see forms and shapes.
They were pushing each other violently,
as we approached level eight.
I pressed the emergency button,
but we still passed eight, nine, and ten.
At level eleven the elevator stopped…
then began to go down again.
At eight the elevator came to a halt
and everyone but me got out.
The darkness became light again,
so relieved, I gave out a shout.
The elevator continued downwards
and stopped at the ground floor.
An old lady and her dog waiting to enter,
but I couldn’t exit the elevator door.

Too Close and Beauty Hurts
To be in the face of Beauty-
and she was Beauty-
is intimidating;
there is the desire to
not be close
for being close intensifies the
sense of inadequacy.
It is a shock to be in the face of beauty
and there arises
at least for me
the desire to find just one flaw
to cling to.
I re-run that fleeting face
back through my mind
to find the way to sanity.
I don't have this view about Nature's beauty
which evidently I tolerate;
but personal beauty
is alive
inches from me everyday
which I face
at the elevator door,
which opens like
the doors of heaven
and there she is;
she and I
eye level to eye level
alone.
The awkward turn
to face the front;
arm-wrestling with the desire
to turn around to have another look;
the eyes themselves still resonate
with the image set
deep in the retina.
I can hear her breathe;
we two alone;
the elevator rising
I feel her there
at one point holding her breath
matching my withholding too.
Finally my floor;
relieved
I flee
confused
again by too much Beauty.
And she
I am sure
faired no better;
the tension was electric.
I sure she felt
I did not like her
nary ever a smile for her
stony silence
emanating from the back
of my neck.
I see her everyday
and nothing changes.
She is Beauty
and I am
intimidated.
We cannot be close.
or even friends.
It is that way I think
because

Feelings Again
My music is playing as i cry
or at least i try
only the eyeliner from the last time
stain my face
i tried to scream but
no sound escaped my lips
i tried to run but
it caught up with me
this feeling is in escapable
all i can do is bleed
hoping the lines will earase
and i can scream again
maybe one day i will escape
this nightmare that started out as a dream
where did it go wrong as i know i blame myself

At Least Pretend We Are Aware
Aching to close the shutters.
The view outside holds less surprises.
Although the Sun is shining bright...
The faces reflect,
A lost appetite for joy!
They seem to have no cheer on them...
Without the appearance of new 'things'
Near!
Or something quick...
To surround themselves to begin,
Then set aside and forget!
And it has not been made clear,
To them at all.
It was never what they had,
But who they were with it.
And without those 'things'...

We would also stop existing!

Something is truly wrong with students now,
Although their intellect shows upward trend;
For teachers and knowledge, they have no love;
To learn a skill, they will only pretend.

I Told You So
How many times have we heard it said
I told you so
when you do something wrong.
It is as if they are some kind of genius,
which always gets it right.
We learn from the mistakes we make
not by someone’s flapping tongue.
We all do things our own way,
if we get it wrong we get it wrong.
We just go back to the beginning
and start all over again
doing things a different way until we get it right.
What we don’t need is some know it all
to stand behind us and tut, tut away.
If we need help, we ask for it
from someone we know who knows
and not by some fly-by-night know it all
who normally knows nothing at all,
