A Few Cents Short
(john michael montgomery)
Looking for spare change
To put gas in my car
But what Ive found
Wont get me very far
Seems lately the low times
Have hit me pretty hard
cause Im a few cents short
From getting to where you are
Im a few cents short
Of holding you in my arms
And a few cents short
Of keeping us from falling apart
Aint it funny how the money
Can change our lives
cause Im a few cents short
From losing you tonight
So I walked to a pay phone down the road
But a few dimes and a nickel is all I had
The operator wants more money
To place my call
But Im a few cents short
If that dont beat it all
Im a few cents short
Of holding you in my arms
And a few cents short
Of keeping us from falling apart
Aint it funny how the money
Can change our lives
cause Im a few cents short
From losing you tonight
Im a few cents short
Of holding you in my arms
And a few cents short
Of keeping us from falling apart
Sure is funny how the money
Can change our lives
cause Im a few cents short
From losing you tonight
Yes Im a few cents short
And Ill be losing you tonight

How Do You Measure Up?
If you measure yourself by ambition,
There will always be someone more ambitious than you.
If you measure yourself by money,
There is always someone wealthier than you.
If you measure yourself by power,
There is always someone more powerful than you.
If you measure yourself with material things,
There is always someone with more stuff than you.
If you measure yourself by where you are in life,
There is always someone farther down the path than you.
If you measure yourself by appearance,
There is always someone that appears than you.
If you measure yourself by God,
Then we are all the same.
We are all wonderfully and beautifully made.
God is love.
And love has no end.
So in God's heart,
You will always measure up!

Rosanna and 40 cents
Rosanna was my schoolmate
Sharing the same classroom for four years
When we first met, I was afraid
Something of her that I feared
She’s bigger and taller
Beautiful like a mayflower
Looked at me like I was her little brother
But deep inside, treated me like her lover
We were together
Everywhere thereafter
Was talk of the school
It was cool
To be labeled
As the most ideal couple
What’s made me attractive to her?
My principality and discipline
60 cents a day given by mother
20 cents a day for fried banana and a drink
At school, that was my daily meals
It’s a frill and thrill
When you can save 40 cents
It would make sense
The result will come in the end
Between Rosanna and 40 cents
She definitely will understand

For a while there, I was a stringer. The expression comes from the old habit of stringing together the column inches that you had written. They'd measure it and pay you 10 cents an inch for your printed copy.

Continuously But Dramatically
Continuing quietly is brave
Quitting quietly is brave
I just see open plain that seems to spread any directions
nature is idleness itself
universally competent
universally torturing
Intuitive vs cognitive thinking
A bat and a ball cost a dollar ten
The bat cost one dollar more than the ball.
Pray tell, how much does the ball cost?
How quickly the answer seems to fall!
If, like most, you said ten cents
You’re lazy and prone not to think (as am I)
For the correct answer, be not
ten cents my friend (no lie!)
For you I most certainly would not jive
If you think, more than a few blinks
You’ll see your answer stinks
For the cost of the ball is not ten cents at all
But at the cost of some thinking…
Is five!

The Intervals
The interval of a minute
Can change the whole world-
At least, all of mine
Whether you take someone’s hand
And leave it sitting there,
Or take that someone’s hand
And toss it in the air
Jumbling their thoughts so much,
Giving them a different opinion
That they invite you to come inside
The interval of a second
Can change the whole world-
At least, all of theirs
And more
When you give them a different point of view,
They remember your way, and pass it on to others
Which opens up mountain passes between us
As I Am A Man
as i am a man
measure me not with that
divine stick
i do not wish
to be more than God
nor do i intend to be
lower than
that beast.
measure me
with the love that i can give you
the sorrows i have
the pains i have endured
the successes that i have
hidden from your eyes
measure me with the purity
of my intentions
the care with which i do my
actions
do not measure me
with your expectations
let me stand strong
on the pavement of
your cares.

measure my love
i will love you without measure
there you shall fail
this love has no number
unquantifiable
your measure cannot measure
this love immeasurable
this love so
unbearable
you measure me again
this love like a flame on your oil lamp
shall then die

Fifty Cents A Day
I am an humble Soldier
far from my friends and home,
mid scenes of war and hardships
I constantly must roam,
with many officers over me,
and them I must obey,
and do just what they tell me,
for fifty cents a day.
I enlisted in the army
to help my country's cause,
because I loved it dearly,
and would sustain its laws,
I felt a free man's duty,
his country to obey,
I came not as a hireling,
for fifty cents a day
I enlisted as a soldier.
a free man and a man
To do a soldiers duty,
as best a soldier can.
hope to fight the rebels,
and hate this long delay.
I came to help my country,
for fifty cents a day.
I now must yield to hardships
in cold in storm and rain
perchance with scanty rations
not even then complain
the right of seeking comfort
long since I signed away
my life I am slowly losing
for fifty cents a day.
who send the soldiers to the field
to buy his willing hand,
with promises so plentiful,
of treatment like a man?
twas those who, in two days,
received a larger pay
than does the soldiers in a month
at fifty cents a day
who promised to the soldier,
his wrongs should be redressed
if tyanny or officers
should his right oppress?
alas! the sword may smight him,
or kicked around he may be,
he finds his only redress,
is fifty cents a day
who promised to the soldiers,
if sickness should appear,
good doctors and kind nurses
was ready and was near,
to aid him in his feebleness
as quick as though his pay
was ten times as much
as fifty cents a day.
twas those who wear the shoulder straps
with haughty air of grace,
who look upon the soldier
below the negro race,
who thinks a soldier's duty
is only to obey
his lordship, and be content
with fifty cents a day.
how oft I've seen the soldier,
near tottering to the ground,
seek vainly for some friendly aid,
when it could ne'er be found,
when told he was not ailing,
to go and take his way,
one week would end his suffering
and fifty cents a day.
now, how many of these officers
would be here where they are,
if forced to live like soldiers,
and take a soldier's fare?
how few would take the treatment
even with their liberal pay,
let alone the poor pittance
of fifty cents a day
cheer up my gallant soldiers,
be cheerful, gay, and smile,
we'll do the fighting now,
and the voting after awhile,
and then we'll show oppressors
that they may fell dismay,
who treated us as serviles,
at fifty cents a day.
This poem was written by my great, great, great, grandfather when he was a POW in the civil war. He wrote this during the month of December 1863. I wanted to share this with everyone in memory of him.

The Measure Of Men
what is the measure of one man
is it the measure of one's strength
I think not
is it the measure of one's stature such as height
I don't think so
is it how wealthy one is
not even close
or is it how much power one possesses over another
not impressive
can a measure of a man be measured with a yardstick
well it can but that park doesn't show he's a man
the tolerance of a man for another man hitting him
can be measured with a ruler
the tolerance of a man for another man attacking his country
can be measured with a grain of salt
the tolerance of a man for another man hitting the one's he loves
now that can only be measured within a whisper
you can only measure a individual man or woman
with how big their heart is and
what qualities lie within that heart
such as dignity for what he works for
such as a stable household for his famly
compassion for people in need
the understanding of what's right and what's wrong
the pride of not what he has done but what
his wife and child has done
the sweat
the blood
and the tears he spars
to keep his marriage from falling apart
once you find a way to measure those things then
and only then will you be able to say
that is
because that is certainly
the real measure of all men

Ten Cents A Dance
I work at the palace ballroom, but gee that palace is cheap
When I get back to my chillly hallroom, Im much too tired to sleep
Im one of those lady teachers, a beautiful hostess you know;
One that the palace features, at exactly a dime a throw.
Ten cents a dance, thats what they pay me
Gosh how they weigh me down.
Ten cents a dance, pansies and rough guys, tough guys who tear my gown.
Seven to midnight I hear drums, loudly the saxophone blows,
Trumpets are tearing my ear-drums, customers crush my toes.
Sometimes I think, Ive found my hero
But its a queer romance;
All that you need is a ticket,
Come on big boy, ten cents a dance.
Fighters and sailers and bow-legged tailors
Can pay for their tickets & rent me
Butchers and barbers and rats from the harbour
Are sweethearts my good luck has sent me
Thought Ive a chorus of elderly bows
Stockings are porous with holes at the toes
Im here till closing time
Dance and be merry its only a dime
Sometimes I think, Ive found my hero
But its a queer romance;
All that you need is a ticket.
Come on, come on big boy, ten cents a dance.

Universally Speaking
I saw your face
Elegant and tired
Cut up from the chase
Still I so admired
Bloodshot your smile
Delicate and wild
Give me she wolf style
Rip right thru me
[Pre-chorus]
Silveretta the jets of a lifetime
Go and get her ive got her on my mind
Nothing better then feeling is so fine
Simply put I saw love stream flow
[Chorus]
Come on baby 'cause cause there's no name for
Give it up and I got what I came for
Universally speaking
Take it back and you make me nervous
Nothing better then love and service
Universally speaking
Win in the long run
I saw your crime
Dying to get high
Two of a kind
Beat all hands tonight
[Pre chorus]
[Chorus]

Sixty Four Cents Per Gallon
Sixty four cents.
That's all they pay.
Sixty four cents per gallon of gas.
Maybe decades ago...
We too could say.
But today with our 'greatness'
And propaganda that is spread.
A dozen of apples,
And perhaps the cost of embarrassment...
May be less,
Than the price of a loaf of bread.
That's what they pay,
In Saudia Arabia each and every day!
And 'he' who leads this great land of ours...
Was turned away as he begged,
Those he chose as 'friends'.
And they embraced and shook his hand.
Sending him like an annoying child,
Back to his home to play!

Cents of Humor
A cents of humor is worth much more than gold.
It’ll keep you young while worrying about metal will make you old.
Though gold’s price may go higher, it won’t make the day sunny.
But a cents of humor will summon the rays and make your days funny.
You’ll never control how much gold will be worth.
However, you are in charge of the value of your mirth.
