The best practice you can get is on the bandstand, but in between gigs I feel I have to stay in shape.

You've got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail.

Bandstand Boogie
Were goin hoppin
Were goin happin
Where things are poppin
The philadelphia way
Were gonna drop in
On all the music they play
On the bandstand
Were goin swingin
Were gonna swing in the crowd
And well be clingin
And floatin high as a cloud
The phones are ringin
My mom and dad are so proud
Im on bandstand
And Ill jump, and hey,
I may even showem my handstand
Because Im on,
Because Im on the american bandstand
When we dance real slow
Ill show all the guys in the grandstand
What a swinger I am,
I am on american bandstand
Were goin hoppin
Were goin happin
Where things are poppin
The philadelphia way
Were gonna drop in
On all the music they play
On the bandstand
Bandstand bandstand bandstand

They made such a fuss just to see us arrive

Practice Every Step
Practice every step.
Do not second guess what it takes.
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
There's no sleeping for someone who has a place to go,
So...
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
Focus on that goal,
And tighten on your hold,
And...
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
Do not second guess what it takes.
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
Every journey taken,
Must be thought of as a race...
And,
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
There's no other way to straighten out a crooked road,
So...
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
No matter what you're told,
There will be some doubts and woes...
But you,
Practice every step.
Yes you,
Practice every step.
Woes you hold will eventually go,
So...
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
Practice every step.
Practice every step.

Get Your Spirit Right
Practice.
Active,
Prayer...
Everyday,
You can!
Be active in the practice,
Of prayer...
Everyday.
You can!
Care less about the he said,
Or she said...
Conflicting pickers of fights.
They'll keep you awake with sleepless nights.
Be true to your practice,
In active...
Prayer,
Everyday.
You can!
Erratic tactics,
Keep captive...
With distractions,
To minimize your pride.
Don't worry about their appetites...
For doing things the wrong way.
You stay on the side of what's right,
Now!
Practice.
Active,
Prayer...
Everyday,
You can!
Be active in the practice,
With swift actions of your prayers...
Everyday.
You can!
Get your spirit right!
Let backbiters do what they do.
You can choose not to approve!
Just keep your practice,
Active...
In prayer,
Everyday.
You can!
Don't worry about their appetites...
For doing things the wrong way.
You stay on the side of what's right,
Now!
Practice.
Active,
Prayer...
Everyday,
You can!

People from major labels were afraid to go to Black Flag gigs throughout most of the band's existence. They treated our gigs as something threatening. I'm sure that it probably was. They probably had reasons to be scared.
Window Dreamin
Lookin out by my window,
Thinking bout you all the time,
Wish you were here with me
Right here by my side,
cause Im window, window dreamin
cause Im window, window dreamin
Every time I find myself on the road
Miss you holdin me tight
Flop down in my easy chair,
Makes me feel alright
cause Im window, window dreamin
cause Im window, window dreamin
(bridge)
Gigs are fun, when theyre done,
Feel so down, act like a clown,
Companys great, but when its late,
Im lookin for the phone
I feel so alone--so alone
Knowin the way we both feel,
O know youre always gonna be my friend
Dig, your face, lord, its real
Someday Im never gonna go again,
cause Im window, window dreamin
cause Im window, window dreamin
(bridge)
Gigs are fun, when theyre done,
Feel so down, act like a clown,
Companys great, but when its late,
Im lookin for the phone
I feel so alone--
So all alone

Shape Of Things To Come
Magic, logic
The system works, but not for me
Look beyond the nearest moment
And youll see
The shape of things to come
Somewhere deep in the city
I can feel you I know youre here
Baby, Im just a pussy-cat
But not a one that you should fear
One, two, always love you
One, two, move up above you
Two, two, right in the face
Yes sir, no sir, three bags full so
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come
Let me get you outta here
Tragic, logic
The system hurts, but not for me
I look beyond the farest moment
And I say
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come
Somewhere deep in the system
I can see you but youre not clear
A simple case of error correction
Come on baby, get your ass in gear
One, two, always love you
One, two, move up above you
Two, two, right in the face
Of sir, no sir, three bags full so
The shape of things to come
Let me get your outta here
The shape of things to come
Look into my eyes and Ill make your day
The shape of things to come
Good things, great things, all just same things
The shape of things to come
The shape of things to come

You're The One That I Want
I got chills
They're multiplying
And i'm losing control
'cause the power you're supplying
It's electrifying!
You better shape up
'cause i need a man
And my heart is set on you
You better shape up
You better understand
To my heart i must be true
Nothing left
Nothing left for me to do
You're the one that i want
You are the one i want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that i want
You are the one i want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that i want
You are the one i want
Oo-oo-oo, the one i need
Oh, yes indeed
If you feel a weird affection
You're to shy to convey
Better take my direction
Feel your way
I better shape up
'cause you need a man
I need a man
Who can keep me satisfied
I better shape up
If i'm gonna prove
You better prove
That my faith is justified
Are you sure
Yes i'm sure down deep inside
You're the one that i want
You are the one i want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that i want
You are the one i want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that i want
You are the one i want
Oo-oo-oo, the one i need
Oh, yes indeed

Shape Me Like A Man
Spark my body into existence
Breath your life into me
Fill these eyes with temptation
Work your mystery
Make me in the image you desire
Raise me up from the earth
Let me be your creation
Women, give me birth
Take me in your hands
And shape me like a man
Shape me like a man
Put this broken body in motion
With a strong and natural drive
Fill my flesh with sensation
Women let me know Im alive
Take me in your hands
And shape me like a man
Shape me like a man
Like a man
Shape me like a man
Like a man
Shape me like a man
Like a man
Take me in your hands
And shape me like a man
Like a man
Shape me like a man
Like a man
Like a man
Shape me like a man
Like a man
Shape me like a man
Make me like a man

I have similar feelings, actually. The intimacy of a club: you can see the people, you can almost feel them; you can't beat that. People will say things, and shout out, it's almost like they're up on the bandstand with you.

To Stay Put
Up to the end of the year stay put,
Living in a twist of the atmosphere, stay put.
I gather words and breath of oxygen,
Indeed the stay on Earth is to adhere, stay put.
My empire needs growing every day,
This garden of the soul can appear and stay put.
The air is eerie and cool, once a day,
The nights are clear with the biosphere, they stay put.
The slumber of ooze is such that the night is dear,
When years function I am absent with beer, just stay put.
You must decide the life to fetch and burrow,
A year takes shape, my enemy is to disappear, I still stay put.

Nothin New
Why is nothing ever new for long
And things go wrong in time
How come love is never new for long
We feel a change inside
Things no longer feel the way they did
People never care the way they did
Lovers never love the way they did
Were got to make it last
Got to fan the spark
People know that love is often cruel
But still they fall in love
I believe that only goes to prove
That loves what we dream of
(bridge)
Even if things can never be the way they were
But if you just hold on your luck might take a turn
We should put in practice
What were learned
That loves the only way
We got to make it stay
(chorus)
Life goes on
Nothins ever new
Maybe different than before
You may not believe me
But nothings ever
Nothings ever, nothings ever new
Dont know things will never be the same Ive heard
But if you just hold on your luck might take a turn
We gotta put in practice
Everything weve learned
That loves the only way
We got to make it stay
(chorus)
Life goes on no matter what you do
And though its crazy, nothings ever
Nothings ever new
You may not believe me, but its true
But nothings ever new

Stay '81
Verse:
Am I just dreaming or did you walk through my door?
Do you still feel the same way that you did before?
Did you come to bring me sorrow?
Like all those wasted days
Let's not think about tomorrow
You can stay
Am I just dreaming or did you say you have to go?
If you can't stay forever, I don't wanna know
There's no need to talk about it
The way things used to be
I'm not living here without you
(Chorus:)
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
(repeat)
No, no, can't let go
No, no, can't let go
No, no, can't let go
Am I just dreaming?
(verse)
You could stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
(repeat)
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
(repeat and fade

Just to be around that, to feel a part of it and be able to integrate the experience while I was with the Messengers, of going and playing gigs with other drummers, gave me the chance to realize that it was not just me that was making it happen.

Shape In A Drape
There's a guy going round the town
You got to check what he is puttin' down
Just one look you know the story is great
He's the guy the chicks love
And the cats can't hate
He's a shape in a drape
A shape in a drape
He's a shape in a drape
And you can dig that he is stookin'
Now some say he's a clipster and a tailor's toad
And he could hype a miserman for all his gold
Some say he's a hipster and some say nix
But everyone's solid when he gets his kicks
He's a shape in a drape
A shape in a drape
He's a shape in a drape
And he is sure alive and kickin'

The Shape Im In
Go out yonder, peace in the valley
Come downtown, have to rumble in the alley
Oh, you dont know the shape Im in
Has anybody seen my lady
This living alone will drive me crazy
Oh, you dont know the shape Im in
Im gonna go down by the wa - ter
But I aint gonna jump in, no, no
Ill just be looking for my mak - er
And I hear that thats where shes been? oh!
Out of nine lives, I spent seven
Now, how in the world do you get to heaven
Oh, you dont know the shape Im in
I just spent 60 days in the jailhouse
For the crime of having no dough
Now here I am back out on the street
For the crime of having nowhere to go
Save your neck or save your brother
Looks like its one or the other
Oh, you dont know the shape Im in
Now two young kids might start a ruckus
You know they feel you trying to shuck us
Oh, you dont know the shape Im in

Dance, more than an exercise
Girl, you must learn dance
And practice it,
To feel high in spirit,
To attain grace in moves,
To shed stress, fat and cholesterol,
To trim muscles and bones,
To learn balance,
To grow in agility
And to gain pain reducing effect.
You stay longer young;
You feel youthful;
You are evergreen.
Otherwise, who will long?
