I do believe we have to understand why reality turned out to be different than expectations and estimates. But you have more public service - certainly many of you - than I have ever had, and you recognize that this is not unusual.

Great Expectations
(eric carmen)
Seems everyday
Im gettin harder pressed
To find a reason to shave
Watchin the hours
Just slippin away
No motivation to get out of bed
And carry on the charade
Caught in a dream thats goin astray
Oh, all those great expectations
Seems they never work out, never work out
The way that I plan
All those great expectations
Why they never work out, never work out
I cant understand
And just when I think
That things are goin right
I get a call from l.a.
Sorry to say were changin your song
I try to reason
But I cant get through
Theyre gonna do it their way
What can I say
Theyve never been wrong
Oh, all those great expectations
Seems they never work out, never work out
The way that I plan
All those great expectations
Why they never work out, never work out
I cant understand
Life is just a game of chance
I think somebody said so
Sometimes you get a hula hoop
Sometimes you get an edsel
Oh, all those great expectations
Seems they never work out, never work out
The way that I plan
All those great expectations
Why they never work out, never work out
I cant understand

Its Not Unusual
Its not unusual to be loved by anyone
Its not unusual to have fun with anyone
But when I see you hanging about with anyone
Its not unusual to see me cry,
Oh I wanna die
Its not unusual to go out at any time
But when I see you out and about its such a crime
If you should ever want to be loved by anyone,
Its not unusual it happens every day no matter what you say
You find it happens all the time
Love will never do what you want it to
Why cant this crazy love be mine
Its not unusual, to be mad with anyone
Its not unusual, to be sad with anyone
But if I ever find that youve changed at anytime
Its not unusual to find out that Im in love with you
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh

Buses (Fun Poem 42)
When they told me
not to use my car for a month.
I smiled and thought,
a blessing in disguise,
but now I’m not so sure.
Walking a couple of miles each day
to get from point A to B,
that is not all that bad.
For longer journeys
I had to use Public Transport.
This is where that blessing
turned into a nightmare in disguise.
You can wait at a bus stop
for an hour or more,
then some bright spark will tell you,
the buses don’t run this way anymore.
Finally you find a bus stop
that the buses do use.
There you wait and wait.
Then you see your bus coming along,
your smile quickly turns to a frown,
for there in the destination window
at the front of the bus,
a little sign that reads.
BUS NOT IN SERVICE.
Bus not in service?
When are they ever in service?
They are always running late,
sometimes never at all.
Then one will come along,
that is over crowed,
and still you can’t get on.
All the time the Government
keep plugging away,
use Public Transport,
for it is greener.
They got that right for a change.
They put the buses out to pasture,
leave them for a while,
so they can chew on the cud.
Only to let them out
to milk the customers dry.

Not So Usual
This is the most unusual story, of a most unusual girl
she's the paint in my picture, of a most unusual world
she can crawl out the frame while shes hanging on the wall
and shes calling my name
shes not so usual, wo
shes most unusual
shes not so usual
shes so unusual
shes mostly a ghost, the way she watches over me
she complains when I smoke, but then you do the same to me
shes controlling my brain activity, knowing when i go to sleep
she'll catch you when I'm falling hard
shes so unusual
shes not so usual
shes not so usual
shes so unusual
shes not so hooked on the drugs like I thought that she was
and never sucking on the lime, and hardly sipping on the wine
and dispite of her bipolar rollercoastering
I think I can trust, she'll keep me singing differently
and its fine cause shes with me now, most all of the time
trying to saving my life, thinking none of her own
and always kissing me goodnight when i just need to be alone
shes so sweet, so discrete, shes exactly what I need
not even make believe
shes not so usual
so unusual
shes not so usual
so unusual
not so usual, and not to practical either
but shes not so mystical, but not to magical either
but shes not so outta control, and not so used to the flow
shes not so usual
nah, shes a natural
ohhh, shes not so usual
shes most unusual
shes so unusual
shes so unusual
shes gonna use me ohhh
shes not so u...
shes not so u...
not so u...
not so....

My Simple Award
I was informed just lately
That I am among those to be called
Who will be rewarded a service pin?
For having served for twenty five years
An accolade for doing public service
Is quite an honor for being recognized
But like five years ago when I did not
Come up to the stage to receive such
For me it is not important
To receive with any award
For what I do is simply my job
To perform what I was trained for
It makes me sad to learn now
After twenty five years of working
I will be called in front of the public
To accept the fact that soon I have to go
Retirement is a bonus phase in life
Forced to give up work for becoming old
Aging marks that sooner one's life will end
My youth used up for service is my sole bliss

Great Expectations
Youre sittin in your seat
And then you stand and clutch your breast
Our music drives you wild along with the rest
You watch me singing this song
You see what my mouth can do
And you wish you were the one I was doing it to
And you watch me playin guitar
And you feel what my fingers can do
And you wish you were the one I was doing it to
Well, listen
Youve got great expectations
Youve got great expectations
Youre dying to be seen
And you wave and call my name
But in the day it seems that Im a million miles away
You watch me beatin my drum
And you know what my hands can do
And you wish you were the one I was doing it to
Well, listen
Youve got great expectations
Youve got great expectations
Youve got great expectations
Then you feels these eyes from the stage
And you see me staring at you
And you hear between the lines, my voice is calling to you
Well, listen
Youve got great expectations
Youve got great expectations
Youve got great expectations, do you want to play the role
Youve got great expectations, youd even sell me your soul
Youve got great expectations
Youve got great expectations
Youve got great expectations, do you want to play the role
Youve got great expectations, youd even sell me your soul
Youve got great expectations, as long as you can play the role
Youve got great expectations

Splitting From Your 'B-S' Flings
You're just like a child.
One who asks questions.
But not patient enough...
To sit and listen to the answers for them.
Your mind can not resist...
Being turned on and turned off quick.
With distractions bombarding any moment.
And you expect someone, like me...
To understand this?
And not be connected.
As if I am void of being emotionally equipped.
One of us is in denial.
One of us puts others on trial...
If they do not live up to our 'scattered' expectations.
If they do not deliver to us the taste of our temptations!
And you can call what I am about to do,
Anything you choose to as it is addressed...
From your perspective free of truth!
But I am splitting from your 'B-S' flings with nonsense...
Right now!

Too Blind To Recognize
Too blind to recognize.
No one really knew,
Who they saw on a regular basis.
And this was not encouraged,
To be expected to accept.
Yet discussing other people,
Was what they did best.
Too blind to recognize.
Too blind to recognize.
Disrespecting was all they knew.
And this they did with a full effect.
No one knew who did what.
Or who had experiences to share,
That would provide benefits all would get.
So no one saw to see to receive opportunities,
They would meet but too blind to recognize.
Too blind to recognize,
Gifts given as a prize!
Gifts given they should pride.
Too blind to recognize,
Gifts given as a prize!
Gifts given they should pride.
Just too blind to recognize.
Just too blind to recognize.
Just too blind to recognize...
Gifts given as a prize!
Gifts given they should pride.
Too blind to recognize.
Just too blind to recognize.
Too blind to recognize.
Just too blind to recognize...
Gifts given as a prize!
Gifts given they should pride.
Too blind to recognize.

Martyrized
I use to feel martyrized.
And sacrificial with a giving of myself,
As a belief.
To be of service to others.
And in the doing...
I cared little if I received.
But saved was I,
From complete stupidity.
When I thought of my deeds,
Becoming more unappreciated.
And that did not dawn on me...
Until someone told me this,
That turned on my 'reality' switch!
'You can not expect people,
To feel as passionate as you do.
Not about that which you assist them with...
Since they see you,
As someone who seeks something to prove.
They 'may' express a fleeting interest.
In what you perceive they value best.
You can not expect them to understand.
Since they believe 'you' are the one,
They extend the helping hand! '
Huh?
'Even though you exhaust yourself,
Sharing your 'gifts' and abilities.
You are they one they are 'patiently' accomodating.
And if what they do does not thoroughly please you,
They will get upset.
Abandon you and leave! '
I see!
Well...
Guess what?
They don't have to bother to do that at all!
I will!
