Our first record didn't come out on vinyl, so I think that might have had something to do with actually being in a position to make sure that it came out in vinyl this time. It sounds way better.

When we were making vinyl records we had a lot of time limitations for each record so songs were left off for a number of reasons. Now, with CDs, much more music can be included.

America stopped making vinyl and phased out the single but Germany held out and refused. Warner's never phased out vinyl in Germany. Now America imports it!

Some of our early work was two minutes twenty when it actually came out on vinyl, very, very, very short. Sometimes if you made a three-minute record they would make you do an edited version for radio, particularly in America.

A Three-Minute Silence (Fun Poem 80)
I once bought a box filled
with old 45 vinyl singles
and buried there amongst them
was one simply called Three Minute Silence.
When I slipped on the record player
and between the hisses and the scratches
three-minute silence is all I got.
There was no music,
no voice raised to sing,
just nothing.
The other side had a tune
and it was so memorable
that I have forgotten what it was.
All I can remember
was the three-minute silence.
Peaceful and golden.

I hardly ever listen to any of our old stuff now. Once the songs have been recorded and put on to vinyl they become someone else's entertainment, not mine.

Come and let me take you to Vinyl Paradise!
For the music man is there waiting for us and,
We need to take Moeletsi along with us.

I can assume that the younger generations will no longer know what vinyl was. Maybe some kids will take their CD back to the shop, telling the shop owner they have a faulty disc and if they could please get a new one.

A Melody
A melody echoes through
the walls, reverberating softly,
quietly, absently in the hallway,
seeping up through the paint,
tingeing it with the crackle
of color that once wandered through
the corridors of a half-forgotten
consciousness I thought I remembered.
I hear the record skip a beat, its
metronome tapping against
the insistent plod of scratched vinyl.
The piano arpeggiates to keep
time, to keep its shape, to accompany
the passing seconds. A voice
reminds me that it speaks through
muffled words, disintegrating bliss—
without a future, without a past—
that decomposes in the contour of
a turn of phrase—that wears out in
the ghost breath the singer draws in.
The cracked memory of another time
or place deliriously meanders through
my thoughts, maniacally haunting
the vacant, three AM shadows that
crawl between my ears.
The disfigured ache, the fuzzing hum
of saudade, never quite materializes,
never quite comes into focus.
An image, a decoupage of
my impressions, sifts through
the jazz of midnight and cloaks
the air with the gray noise of decay
and rediscovery. A melody reminds me
of the choric sounds, the tumult
of tiny, vanishing hooks that trace
what was once sunshine—
what was camaraderie at arm's length.

The Sprites Depart Smiling
‘España, rhapsody for orchestra' by Chabrier -
my father's song, one day he brought home
a vinyl record with this lovely music and we
listened enraptured, afterwards played the
record over and over, never grew tired of it
The introduction is a promise of enchanting
things to come, the music an opening into a
new world, musical themes as dancing sprites
appearing and disappearing, calling on listeners
to follow, my mind leaves my body to go along
The melody tracing a spiraling dance in which
the sprites float high above the ground within
vertical circles moving forwards in a horizontal
line weaving new themes, harder and higher
goes up while slower and lower comes down
All increasing speed to reach the ecstatic end,
a joyous last bow, my mind returns enriched
while the sprites depart smiling, all of us
breathless, satisfied with the dance that
had been...

You want to do something, you want to have the bravery to do something original. And there will always be people who are like, the classicists who are like, 'No, but it's got to have this.' In life, there are people like that attached to every single thing that there is. These are the same people that are like, still playing vinyl.

Need a fix? I’ve got the mix.
I’ve got Pete Tong licked.
I am a vinyl prostitute.
And the club it is my trick.
I spin it to win it.
Then I dropp the next track.
The dance floor is my battlefield.
Here comes my attack.
I’m pushing my beats like they are drugs.
On the platter inject the needle.
The addiction I spread, you can’t get enough.
My sets are truly lethal.
