The humblest painter is a true scholar; and the best of scholars the scholar of nature.

There are successful scholars, public-spirited scholars, upright scholars, cautious scholars, and those who are merely petty men.
The great scholar forgets about fame, the average scholar works for it, and the unworthy scholar steals it.
Rake It In
I am here again
Tied up in your torture frame
Printed paper, guilty to blame
The story stays the same
Dry me out
Run me down
Burn me out
And rake it in, you rake it in
Rake it in, you rake it in, yeah
A slave upon your plate
I am your dreams, yeah your life and your bait
Selfish schemes, I proceed, you await
You my indefinite hate
Do you know what my chopping blocks for?
Do you know what my hanging braids for?
Do you know what my chamber maids for?
Can you guess what i, what I have in store for you?

The Toad Not Raken
Now that the frost has gone its rimy way
there’s the matter of that long grass
that meets the undergrowth
at the end of the garden;
time to take steps to tidy it.
two rakes awaited my decision:
there’s the metal one, which makes hard work
but scarifies the moss and aerates the top soil as well –
and the wooden one, slightly Japanese looking,
its tines further apart, and easier on the arms,
which combs the long grass rather than removes it,
setting it up for the strimmer when the grass dries off.
But I remembered how last year’s early raking
disturbed a sleepy toad and, to my shame, partially dismembered it.
These little choices make our road and name us.
I took the gentler wooden rake, and dragged it careful-slow;
the reward, a scuttling movement in the grass ahead.
Two rakes were there for me to make my choice;
I’m glad I took the one less often used, the gentler one.
Though looking at the grass, it's hardly made any difference.

Scholar's Life
Mark what ills the scholar’s life assail,
toil, envy want, the garret and the jail,
and others Dr. Johnson has omitted,
like friends who think he ought to be committed
by men with licenses and long white coats
who do not care for all the things he quotes,
and patrons who have never gone to college,
who hope that words he uses to acknowledge
their help will make them so respectable
that they to higher office are electable,
and scholars who search carefully his writings
for their own names in small print in the citings
of footnotes, endnotes, all the apparatus
which basically for them is all that matters,
protected by their status and their tenure,
manure some pile on, some pile on womenure.
To toil and envy, garret and the jail,
add steps some make to make their rivals fail.
These are some ills befalling scholars’ lives;
survivors are the ones with lovely wives.
Frank Kermode reviews several books on Dr. Johnson in the NYR, June 22,2006:
When Johnson’s poem “The Vanity of Human Wishes” was first published in 1749, it contained this couplet:
…mark what ills the scholar’s life assail,
Toil, envy, want, the garret at the jail.
In the second edition of 1755, “garret” is changed to “patron.”

Worried About Work
A fact of worry instils fear in the scholar,
Opening the volumes of worry conquers.
Let scholars love the stars of scholarship,
Justice will prevail from the heavens due to this.
An anxious reply to the jester is not scholarly,
A good student is of the best authority.
A worried look in his eyes suggests his cleverness,
But then evil uproots the warrior, the soldier of sages.

Bloody Mary
Over by the still she says,
man i think you better wait for tomorrow!
Take this pillow for your head
And i'll take you.
Back against the beast i went
To feel her coming, hot for a follow up
Here comes the sun again(to see me through)
On and on she takes me from you, my love
On and on she rakes me from you
Happily i leave her fed
Tonight i swear, i swear on tomorrow(wait)
Here comes the sun again
To see me through
On and on she takes me from you, my love
On and on she rakes me from you
Bloody mary's for all
Bloody mary's for all
On and on she takes me from you, my love
On and on she rakes me from you
All of my dreams for youto follow
All of my dreams for youto swallow
All of my dreams for you

Phenomenons Studied
Phenomenons studied by scholars,
Are...
Stunning phenomenons never undone.
Phenomenons studied by scholars,
Are...
Stunning phenomenons never undone.
Mysteries lived to exist,
Are...
Phenomenons never undone.
And,
The more they're probed confusion sits.
Because we don't see us a part of this.
Why are we here to be neighbors?
With confusion that we can't resist.
Why can't we accept our differences?
Without trying to end conflicts.
Why the fighting to exist...
In a peacefulness ruled by one fist.
Phenomenons studied by scholars,
Are...
Stunning phenomenons never undone.
Phenomenons studied by scholars,
Are...
Stunning phenomenons never undone.
And why are obelisks ignored?
Why are they there and who are they for?
What is that energy they feed?
And what is it that we can't see?
What is the purpose and the need?
Phenomenons studied by scholars,
Are...
Stunning phenomenons never undone.
Mysteries lived to exist,
Are...
Phenomenons never undone.
And,
The more they're probed confusion sits.
Because we don't see us a part of this.
What blind eye has to open?
To fix what has been broken.

Scholarship Is Poor
I fancied myself a scholar one day,
With uncaring money the books displaced the books,
Which was assuredly first class, with no expense,
Like the cheap and deep recesses of Hell.
My boasting and reducing was incomplete,
Wasting money just was that funny with serving.
Various humans dissolved into a fluid of gases,
The teachers shamed the warriors, for the scholars brightened.
My scholarship came to rest as I plummeted
To the ground after the results had hatched,
The results were too poor and I am too poor.

Pick It Up Or Be Gone
Pick it up or be gone.
What's given.
Pick it up or be gone.
What's there.
Pick it up or be gone.
The steak.
Or the rake.
Or the keys,
To open the gate!
Now...
Pick it up or be gone.
What's given.
Pick it up or be gone.
What's there.
Pick it up or be gone.
The steak.
Or the rake.
Or the keys,
To open the gate!
Now...
Don't try to imitate,
Homemade cake.
Oh no.
And don't ever try to duplicate,
A delicious taste.
Or...
Butter up faked mashed potatos.
Pick it up or be gone.
What's given.
Pick it up or be gone.
What's there.
Pick it up or be gone.
The steak.
Or the rake.
Or the keys,
To open the gate!
Now...
Pick it up or be gone.
Oooow.
Pick it up or be gone.
Yeah.
Pick it up or be gone.
Now...
Pick it up or be gone!
