I've talked to some drummers who seem to have a very hard time staying in shape on the road, including some drummers touring with high-profile acts that don't have to live on fast food every night.

To have everything written for you... It's not really creating. That's why I think symphony drummers are so limited. They 're limited to exactly what was played a hundred years before them by a thousand other drummers.

Almost the moment he died, they put him in Playboy as one of the greatest drummers, which he was - there's no doubt about it. There's never been anybody since. He's one of the greatest drummers that ever lived.

Watering the weed
Pipers and drummers were playing,
Engrossed in their act, displaying
Their skill in various hard learned ragas,
In a marriage procession down the street.
But it fell on deaf ears as water to weeds.
People wanted the sound, not the music.
Pipers and drummers were playing
For their money, their souls elsewhere.
People want sound, not music in a function.

Doin It Right
(tom lavin)
Published by uncut music - bmi/procan
Doin it right, doin it right, doin it right, doin it right
The rock bands cookin and the drummers gettin down
Were doin it right on the wrong side of town
I know a place on the wrong side of town
The rock bands cookin and theyre gettin on down
The slot mans playin like his souls on fire
Movin like a rumour on a telephone wire
Go rev up your chevy, put your gas foot down
Were doin it right on the wrong side of town
Doin it right, doin it right, doin it right, doin it right
The rock bands cookin and the drummers gettin down
Were doin it right on the wrong side of town
There aint no future gettin magazine girls
Taken to the club with their hard lovin thrills
No time for tears, trouble and sorrow
Rock and roll like theres no tomorrow
Turn off the tube and put your magazine down
Were doin it right on the wrong side of the town
Doin it right, doin it right, doin it right, doin it right
The rock bands cookin and the drummers gettin down
Were doin it right on the wrong side of town
Doin it right on the wrong side of town
I know a place on the wrong side of town

Historically, musicians know what it is like to be outside the norm - walking the high wire without a safety net. Our experience is not so different from those who march to the beat of different drummers.

I was a beginner again. I practiced hard and used to listen very closely to recordings of American jazz drummers such as Tony Williams and Kenny Clarke.

hiding in Space
attention to all
people on earth
planes and titans
three wings til night falls
a tiger for his stripes
a wish for your lives
these key's lock the frightened
the drummers beat the bitek'ens
winter's in warlands
castles made of noman's
night men for snowmen
a princess for fire's
some weapons made of liers
green snakes and blue fly'ers
were seeking poor people on earth
a tiger and wing's
food and your thought's
were villain's in space
and time's only night
fighter's for guts
fuel'ers to sight

Art was carrying me a lot of the time. When you're accustomed to playing with Art, and you play with other drummers, it's as if the bottom dropped out.

Almost everything I've done, I've done through my own creativity. I don't think I ever had to listen to anyone else to learn how to play drums. I wish I could say that for about ten thousand other drummers.

I think at one time every drummer wanted to play like Krupa or wanted to win a Gene Krupa drum contest. This is the big inspiration for drummers and naturally it has to be the same way for me.

I can understand why some of these drummers and bass players become cult figures with all of their equipment and the incredible amount of technique they have. But there's very little that I think satisfies you intellectually or emotionally.
Y... Food for the soul
Food for the body
I know of men, who do not have enough,
Lacking food and drink, their life is rough
Day in, day out they struggle for food
There is no time for any other good
Food for the ego
I know of men who have enough food and drink
So they have time for something else to think
Their egos are hungry for money, power and fame
Getting more, being restless, an endless game
Food for the soul
I know of men who are contented with how they live
They focus on soul and never cease to give
To give love and support, perform acts randomly kind
They are the ones who have at any time peace of mind
