I'm a character actor, so I don't take the hit if the movie's bad, the lead does. So, I don't want to be the lead. He takes the hit, I don't.

Lead Balloon
Kiss my ass! I said
And I threw my drink
Tequila trickling
Down his business suit
Must be the irish blood
Fight before you think
Turn it now
You cant cowtow
You cant undo it
Its his town
And that went down
Like a lead balloon
Lead lead lead lead balloon
He said sic her, rover
That went over
Like a lead balloon
Lead lead lead lead balloon
Lead balloon
An angry man is just an angry man
But an angry woman
Bitch!
I had to ask him for a helping hand
It came with the heart
Of a bonaparte
Of a frozen fish
Its his town
And that went down
Like a lead balloon
Lead lead lead lead balloon
He said sic her, rover
That went over

It is scary for an actor when you get hired as a lead. No matter what the plot is, it is your job to do something interesting enough to make them want to get inside the lead character's head.

I think the character does tend to suit an episodic thing, because what's fun about him is that he doesn't care about anyone else, and it's very difficult for a main character - a lead character - in a movie to not care about anybody else.

The Unhappy Ending
Tears subsiding
Michael lifts
A gun up to his head
Sorry for the part he played
And many many dead
As he pulls the trigger,
And he feels the hammer fall
His mind goes back a year ago
And he remembers us all
And how we loved him
Oh (lead me on)
Lord lead me on
Oh (lead me on)
Lord lead me on
She said she'd been with other men
But that was long ago
Long before she fell in love with him
He ought to know
He could not believe her
He told her to her face
And took on with another girl
Put maggie in disgrace
Oh (lead me on)
Lord lead me on
Oh (lead me on)
Lord lead me on
But when they found they found her dying
He realized what he done
She died because he blamed her
For things she'd never done
A loud explosion rocks the air
And things go cry in shame
As the gun hurls out the shell
It crashes through his brain
Oh (lead me on)
Lord lead me on
Oh (lead me on)
Lord lead me on

John Cornstalk
Jack Cornstalk lives in the Southern Land—
What says Cornstalk John?
Jack Cornstalk says in a loud firm voice:
“Land of the South, lead on.”
CHORUS:
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Land of the South, lead on!
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Lead on, Land of the South!
John Bull lays claim to the Southern Land.
Jack, is the South Land thine?
John Cornstalk cries in a loud, firm voice:
“The Land of the South is mine!”
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Land of the South, lead on!
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Lead on, Land of the South!
“By the long, long years my father toiled
In the pioneering band;
By the hardships of those early days,
I claim the Southern Land!”
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Land of the South, lead on!
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Lead on, Land of the South!
But where shall the Land of the South lead to?
Where lead the nation’s van?
Jack Cornstalk cries from his strong young heart:
“To the Dynasty of Man.”
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Land of the South, lead on!
Land of the South, lead on, lead on,
Lead on, Land of the South!

Where You Lead
(Carole King/Toni Stern)
Wanting you the way I do
I only want to be with you
And I would go
To the ends of the earth
Cause, darling
To me thats what
Youre worth
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
If youre out on the road
Feeling lonely, and so cold
All you have to do is call my name
And Ill be there on the next train
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
I always wanted a real home
With flowers in the window sill
But if you want to live in New York City
Honey, you know I will
I never thought I could get satisfaction
From just one man
If anyone can keep me happy
Youre the one who can
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need to be with you
I will follow
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need to be with you
I will follow where you lead
Oh, yes I will
Oh, Im gonna follow where you lead
Im gonna follow where you lead
Oh, Im gonna follow where you lead
I will follow
I will follow
Oh, yes I will

Lead Me, Guide Me
(words & music by doris akers)
Lead me oh lord, wont you lead me
I am tired and I need thy strength and power
To guide me over my darkest hour
For just open my eyes that I may see
Lead me oh lord, wont you lead me
Lead me, guide me along the way
For if you lead me I cannot stray
Or just open my eyes that I may see
Lead me oh lord, wont you lead me
I am lost if you take your hand from me
I am blind without try light to see
Lord just always let me thy servant be
Lead me oh lord, wont you lead me
Lead me, guide me along the way
For if you lead me I cannot stray
Lord just open my eyes that I may see
Lead me oh lord, wont you lead me

You're being cast for your acting ability. It's not based on the way your body functions. If you're playing a lead in a movie, it's for that character and they'll tailor it to you. In a dance company, you have to fit in a definite mold.

Lead Me On
Shoulder to the wheel
For someone elses selfish gain
Here there is no choosing
Working the clay
Wearing their anger like a ball and chain.
Fire in the field
Underneath a blazing sun
But soon the sun was faded
And freedom was a song
I heard them singing when the day was done
Singing to the holy one.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking...lead on.
Waiting for the train
Labelled with a golden star
Heavy hearted boarding
Whispers in the dark
Where are we going--is it very far?
Bitter cold terrain
Echoes of a slamming door
In chambers made for sleeping, forever
Voices like thunder in a mighty roar
Cry to the lord.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking...lead on.
Man hurts man
Time and time, time again
And we drown in the wake of our power
Somebody tell me why.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking...lead on.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking...lead on.

Lead Them Home My Dreams
Intro:
Lead them home
Lead them home my dreams,
My dreams
Verse 1:
Some people stand
Some choose not to understand
Some people fight (fight, fight)
Some people dream
Some people wake up
In the middle of the night
With the eyes of a tiger and a childs curiosity
Cant turn from my conscience when its starin at me
Chorus:
Lead them home
Lead them home my dreams
You can hear
When you disguise whispers as screams
(lead them home my, lead them home my...dreams)
Verse 2:
Some people climb
Some people wait for time to pass
Looking for a miracle (a miracle)
Some people could care less
Some people dwell on the impossible
And I always remember the times I let myself slide
And I put all the bad things like money
Far lower on the list than pride
Bring me home
Bring them home my dreams (lead the home)
Bring them home my dreams
(bring the home my, lead them home my)
You can hear, you can hear (you can hear)
When you disguise whispers as screams
(lead them home my, lead them home my)
Bring them home (bring them home, bring them home)
Bring them home my dreams
(lead them home my, bring them home my)
You can hear, you can hear when you
Disguise whispers as screams
(lead them home my, bring them home my...dreams)
Verse 3:
Wait a lifetime
Then my wish will drag on slowly
Come into ones own
At the time of conception (ooooo...)
Give in over time
You may as well change your mind
Now is when I see the light (I see it)
Im gonna touch it, grab it -
Make it mine.....
Bring them home.....
Bring them home.....
Lead them home (lead the home)
(bring them home my, lead the home my)
(lead the home, lead them home, lead them home)
Lead the home (lead them home)
Lead them home my dreams
(lead them home my, lead them home my)
Disguise whispers as screams - yeah!
Lead them home (lead them home)
Lead them home (lead them home)
Lead them home (lead them home)
Lead them home (ooooo...)
Lead them home
Lead them home my, my, my dreams.....
Lead them home my dreams
Bring them back to me
Lead them home my dreams
Oh-whoa-whoa-whoa.....

I have friends who are leading men, and they're only ever allowed to play leading men of a certain type. But as a character actor, there's a wider variety of projects available. On the big Hollywood films, all they care about is having their lead in place, so it's actually easier for someone like me to slip in. And I'm happy to do so.

I think I enjoy working obviously as a lead, but also you know I feel I'm also a character actor as well, so I enjoy approaching various projects in all sort of capacities. Any film I have been able to do I feel very fortunate to have been a part of.

Double Life
It takes a fast car lady to lead a double life
It takes a slow star lady if you want to do it twice
You take your backseat rumble
Take your frontseat wife
Takes a fast car lady to lead a double life
It takes a light foot lady to lead a double life
It takes a good book maybe if you want to do it nice
When you idle at the stop light you better get the signal right
Light foot lady, you need a double life
Well, lift me from the wondermaze
Alienation is the craze
And its all gonna happen to you
You think its a phase
And its all gonna happen to you
When you drive in the haze
It takes a freeway lady to lead a double life
It takes some leeway lady if you want to do it twice
Neon blinking on the street
Everyone is bittersweet
Freeway lady, you lead a double life
Well, lift me from the wondermaze
Alienation is the craze
And its all gonna happen to you
You think its a phase
And its all gonna happen to you
When you drive in the haze
Its all=85gonna happen to you
(its all gonna happen to you)
Thats right I said
And its all gonna happen to you
Thats right well
Gonna? say it to you-oo
(its all gonna happen to you)
Well thats right oh?
Its all gonna happen to you-oo, well
I said its all gonna happen to you-oo-oo yeah
Gonna tell ya again, I said=20
(its all gonna happen to you) well
(fade)

I love rehearsing because in rehearsals there are no mistakes, nothing is wrong, some things apply or lead you to focus on the character and the things that don't apply are equally valuable because they lead you to towards what does.

Lead Them to Thee
Lead them, my God, to Thee,
Lead them to Thee,
These children dear of mine,
Thou gavest me.
O, by Thy love divine,
Refrain
Lead them, my God, to Thee,
Lead them, lead them,
Lead them to Thee.
When earth looks bright and fair,
Festive and gay,
Let no delusive snare,
Lure them away;
But from temptation’s power,
Refrain
E’en for such little ones,
Christ came a child,
And through this world of sin,
Movèd undefiled;
O, for His sake, I pray,
Refrain
Yea, though my faith be dim,
I would believe
That Thou this precious gift,
Wilt now receive;
O, take their young hearts now;
Refrain

Better Outside
It will live better outside than ti fix it inside,
It will stay peacefully at home than to force it in,
And like character versus personality;
But negative character will lead you nowhere.
