When I Found The Words

When I found the words,
that turned into poems
I was instructed to follow a career
that could earn a living,

something away from literature
or even journalism,
that would not come to defy
my relationship with God.

I was taught the languages
of mathematics and accounting
but the words were hunting
for a way of expression,

being stored up for years
even while my then wife,
saw my poetry
as just sentimental rubbish

and now that I am hammering out
the words, the meanings and sounds
I am again haunted by an elitist clique
for whom the position of the self

has become much higher
that the power of words,
who comprehends any able wordsmith
as a threatening menace

as they have to hammer away
at one verse for weeks and months,
rewriting it up to sixty times
to make a poem from it.

A Cheaper Form Of Writing Poetry Seems!

Articles, novels and short stories are highly awarded;
Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize and Booker prize go to them!
For poetry writings no such high prizes are awarded yet.
Is poetry a meaner form of writing compared to stories?

Fact fused fiction are appreciated as serious kind of novels;
Realism blended romantic stories are highly liked by many.
Poetry is a product of imagination, expression of emotion!
Mere fun without any utility serves no social purpose good.

Poetic philosophy of life and Nature has great value for all!
Wisdom, truth, seriousness, amusement and beauty enrich
Poetry of high value rare to be found in the poetic ocean!
If award is constituted for high philosophic poetry it’s good.

The final abode of all dissatisfied souls seems to be poetry!
Rich experience of all fields poetry blends to give satisfaction;
But many indulge in poetry writing for amusement fast now.
Only pleasure and wisdom make poetry a crown of literature!

Never You

Over my decades of sojourn on earth
There is but a lesson I've come to
learn;
Is that you never, never, never quarrel
with a poet
For he takes you up, puts you in a pot
Season you, and finally, he eats you up
with his words.
His tongue is cursed and poisoned
Like a warring deadly disease.
DO YOU.. DO YOU.. DO YOU really think
That poets are as friendly like you think,
Well, listen now friend, let me tell
You a little secret about poetry.
Like philosophy, it could be quite
contradictory.
My mentor Mr. Taban Lo Liyong
Would say: poetry is not a song
That a lover sings to a love of his
He only wishes for a bite or a kiss
But yet, let us sit and ponder on it
Taban was right about poetry;
It is a science, with rules like we
have in mathematics.
Thoughts arranged in lines are
called poetry,
Nobody writes poetry,
You only utter your thoughts
With much love for the world.
So we can now say poetry and
thoughts are one.

Never let a poet eat you up
With his thoughts or his words
For in his heart lies an abyss
And a void, like we have in Tartarus.

Poetry is the Divine Part of Man

Poetry haters love to make fun of the touchy-feely stuff
as though that defined who or what poetry is.

Poetry is the last time the sun gets reflected
in somebody's eyes, when they're saying goodbye-
maybe for forever.

And it's that first dropp of rain, touches the new brides veil,
blesses her; as she's lifting it off her face
for the first time, after being kissed in the marriage ceremony.

And poetry might be that bubble,
over the sink.. keeps floating away, fully intact;
even though all the laws of physics and gravity may be saying
it ought not be able to go on existing;

And poetry in motion
is a baby, trying to walk and falling down
again and again;
refusing to give up, surrender
less painful though that might be.

And poetry could even be your hand over my mouth,
because you know that I can never really say
what I am trying so hard to say;
as there's another form of secret communication
connects soul directly to soul,
without confusing or complicated words.

And that is some of the invisible poetry,
lives in the eyes, the hands; the heart of the mind;
and all the hidden, inner recesses of a human being; and even though
something may be a form of poetry for one; it may not be for another.

Finally, if you balled up the emotions together, and then just threw them up
into the open air, not knowing where they might come down, or even if;
this too, could be one of the purest forms of poetry.

My words could go on flowing forever, like a stream, and that could be poetry;
or they might stop without warning and

That Book Of Poetry....

there is no need
to pay
a semester of poetry
from any
teacher of poetry

who teaches whom?
can poetry be taught?
can poetry have
a dictated form?

no one teaches whom
and it cannot be taught
neither can it have a form
for poetry is here
deep in the heart of man
embedded in the mind
felt and then
whether you like it or not
becomes written

An act of poetry

Ruin is what we need –
Despair is what we feed
Upon in poetry

A shock resets the nerves –
Helps remould the curves
Of written art

Catharsis helps portray –
Acting out a play
On expurgation

Tears or hidden fears
Release the bottled years
To ink a page:

The pen be our salvation.

The Young Poet

Poetry was something else

written by others

somewhere else

and came from

somewhere else

but the poetry

which he did not know

called one day

in a language he did not know

so he put down words on paper

and threw the paper away

but the words did not go away

and he did not know what poetry should do

until he wrote the words

which told him

what poetry could do

for only poetry can teach you poetry

Words of liberation for my nation

Chains of slavery are still over my people.
Notorious minds still over power innocent minds.
What can free the black child, what can free my nation?
I ask in pain and suffering in the dark jail cells,
What can free me from mental slavery?
How to know right from wrong?
How to think free and build a free society?
The solution is in the words of liberation, the words of wisdom.

I write and recite a revolution, my revolution my poetry.
I do n’t need praises or worship but only recognition and understanding of the people to words of liberation, understanding of poetry.
I stand before you to present poetry,
I stand before you to present the words of liberation to my nation.

Poetry that builds, poetry that destroys.
Poetry that destroyed the impious minds of colonists in Rhodesia.
I speak of poetry that built freedom in South Africa.
When I speak of poetry I mean the true meaning of words.
Words of wisdom,
Words of freedom,
Words of liberation,
Words to free my nation.

The words of liberation to my nation
Words of liberation to free my generation
Poetry-poetry-poetry-poetry-poetry.

Poetry of Art or Art of Poetry?

Which came first-poetry or art?
Which of these two is my favorite part?
Poetry speaks to the heart and soul
Through vocalization of written word,
While art molds and shapes formation
Of heart and soul once the poetic art
Of words moves to the shape the heart
Feels inspires visualization and creation
Of such dramatic, deep impact as art
Makes responsive to the poetry that
Inspires it.
Does poetry not speak of art and
Art of poetry?
Each of these takes the form
Of a smiling simile.
Art is the extension of visual beauty,
Words unspoken
As extensively connected as the
Heartfelt extension indepth beauty
Stimulates out of spoken words
Poetry admires and inspires
Deep down in the soul.
Art reflects poetic expression
Poetry visualizes mentally
While are visualizes physically-
Both of which visualize emotionally
When mutually expressed and impressed
Upon each other to create the beauty
That first created it.

A Book

A volume speaks of divine actions and rigorous mathematics
Of the soul as a light of heaven.
A book reads of writing and matter of energy, of work
And the studies binding us in flames and ruination, of pleasure.
A word is like a nothing, a liver and a heart is strangely so,
The merger of phrases have Paradise.

But is it

Right down within the depths of me
there lies a vein of poetry
Wherein I find when I have leisure
words which are my greatest treasure.

Words with which I can fashion verse
some silken smooth and some perverse
Each one is chosen carefully
then put together artfully.

I find them raw and unrefined
then with the power of my mind.
I create intricate designs
of words that some idea defines.

A poet is an artisan
who follows carefully a plan
that’s handed down from days of yore.
Which many men have used before.

To create formal poetry
to demonstrate their artistry.
Perchance I sometimes get it right
in verses which I choose to write.

I can imagine nothing worse
for those of us who write in verse
Than poetry which does not scan
and lacks all structure, has no plan.

Just words which incoherently
are juxtaposed haphazardly
. Which critics now suppose to be
the future form of poetry.
