Sassoon's Public Statement Of Defiance

'I am making this statement as an act of wilful defiance of military authority, because I believe the war is being deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end it.

I am a soldier, convinced that I am acting on behalf of soldiers. I believe that this war, upon which I entered as a war of defence and liberation has now become a war of aggression and conquest. I believe that the purposes for which I and my fellow soldiers entered upon this war should have been so clearly stated as to have made it impossible to change them, and that, had this been done, the objects witch actuated us would now be attainable by negotiation.

I have seen and endured the suffering of the troops, and I can no longer be a party to prolong these sufferings for ends which I believe to be evil and unjust. I am not protesting against the conduct of the war, but against the political errors and insincerity's for which the fighting men are being sacrificed.

On behalf of those who are suffering now I make this protest against the deception which is being practised on them; also I believe that I may help to destroy the callous complacence with which the majority of those at home regard the continuance of agonies which they do not share, and which they have not sufficient imagination to realise.'

The issue is whether the ultimate civil authority of the United States can tolerate actions in contempt of constitutional lines of authority. Any lessening of civil power over military power must inevitably lead away from democracy.

Authority Song

They like to get you in a compromising position
They like to get you there and smille in your face
They think, theyre so cute when they got you in that condition
Well I think, its a total disgrace
Chorus:
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I been doing it, since I was a young kid
Ive come out grinnin
I fight authority, authority always wins
So I call up my preacher
I say: gimme strenght for round 5
He said: you dont need no strength, you need to grow up, son
I said: growing up leads to growing old and then to dying,
And dying to me dont sound like all that much fun
Chorus:
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I been doing it, since I was a young kid
Ive come out grinnin
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I been doing it, since I was a young kid
Ive come out grinnin
I fight authority, authority always wins
Oh no
Oh no
I fight authority, authority always wins
Chorus:
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I been doing it, since I was a young kid
Ive come out grinnin
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I been doing it, since I was a young kid
Ive come out grinnin
I fight authority, authority always wins

I am proud to be white

My two dogs patrol the yard
from side to side
and walk along the wall
with the street
to and fro
as if they at any moment expect
a threat
or armed invasion

and I have moved the mailbox
for the poor postman
to do his duty in safety

and it’s quite clear
that lawful authority
is decaying
and the country is more insane than mad.

Black policemen walk eight
next to each other in a shopping centre
and even when I stand pressed
against a shop’s window
to avoid them
they still bump into me

and when I let them know
that the walkway doesn’t belong to them
with a submachine gun
they turn to me
because I am white
and this intimidation I laugh off

even when I have to
give a statement
for my stolen car
to the gate guard
on the outside of the police station.

So near to a black police state
I have not yet seen
and still for this nonsense I am not afraid
and know my rights and the law
and these people will never know
how much I love my country.

I am proud to be white
and my language, culture, norms, values
and humanity differ so much
that I never
want to be another colour.

Even when I am now
a third rate citizen in my country
which claimed
military service from me
where there are discriminated
against my human rights
and where from time to time
I am without an income and a job

since I serve an almighty Lord
who sets governments up and let them fall
and who gets solutions out of impossibility.

Power Mad

Military show is Blastin' off to Kosovo.
Military show with lightning speed.
Sensitivity? Oh, just a rusty nail in the corporate show.
How many stabs before we bleed?
Those Pinocchios chattering out in stereo,
boy Pinnocchio and his golden deed.
Masculinity? Oh, galvanized in the world wide show
as we fertilise the seed.
Power mad, I didn't chop the tree down dad
I only try to do what's right.
Power man, the best friend that you ever had
unless of course you choose to fight.
Power mad, driving out of the shadows,
he never tires when he plays.
Power mad, he's a streak in the night time
speculating how he'll take on the world some day.
Originality? Oh, just a rusty nail in a Broadway show
how many stabs before we succeed.
Power mad, I didn't drop my pants down dad,
I know my left hand from my right.
Power man, the best friend that you ever had
unless of course you lose the fight

Authoritative Power

The Mighty God and Creator, is Jesus Christ, our Blessed Savior,
Who alone has complete Authority, from the beginning to eternity,
Who became a man but still God, becoming flesh to visit our sod,
The very Creator of all you see, came to be Savior of you and me.

For only Christ my dear friend, knows the beginning from the end,
The Alpha and The Omega is He, Who controls all things eternally,
The One Who sustains all the earth, sustains us through New Birth,
The One holding all things together, grants us life with Him forever.

Of God, Christ was the Incarnation, sent for each and every nation,
Sent into the very world He created, to be scoffed at while berated,
Crucified by peoples He knew, to provide salvation to me and you,
As one dead, taken from Calvary, put in a tomb to rise in Authority.

Authority He had before time began, before creating earth and man,
God’s Authority exceeding anyone, Power He displayed in His Son,
The power that put Heaven in place, was at Calvary, know as Grace,
Because God has the authority to, redeem sinners, like me and you.

The Mighty Creator’s returning again, to display Authority to all men,
At Christ’s return, long awaited, by believers on the earth He created,
During His reign as He rules, reigning with His own but judging fools,
As those souls that believed not God, will see His Authoritative Rod.

Dreads

It's not a statement of defiance,
I wear my hair in dreads.
It's who I am...
And I'm proud to show them.
Naturally...
On my head!

I use to keep my hair short and faded...
Conservative in conformity!
To fit into a 'conscious' acceptance...
An unspoken, visual uniformity.
Believing to appear like everyone else...
Would bestow upon me,
A certain respected sense of self.

Having no clue it was 'me' I pursued!

It took me a while to realize,
From myself I ran and fled!
Then when I 'woke' up clear with understanding...
I still had concealed a truthfulness not revealed.
My hair is 'nappy'!
And when not cut,
It dreads!
Curling into 'naps'.
And feeling comfortable on my head.

How sweet the awakening...
To a wholesomeness fed!
Not to dred but to wear in pride.

It's not a statement of defiance,
I wear my hair in dreads.
It's who I am...
And I'm proud to show them.
Naturally...
On my head!
Dreadlocked.

And now that I feel,
My best of self can be expressed...
I see so many who are trapped in masquerades.
Doing their best to project...
What they feel someone else,
Will accept without protest!

And I am so happy I can live my life...
With a peace of mind I find at rest!
Knowing a simple thing like 'dreads'...
Exposes a complete identity I keep.
And makes me feel at my very best yet!
Instead.
Forgetting the 'me' who I thought I knew...
And having not one regret!
Not within my heart I thread.

Note:
Dedicated to those dreadlock wearers
who feel the gloriousness of being who they are!
And a deep kindred with 'Jah' The Supreme!
A strengthening of 'spirit' develops when one
becomes...'dread-headed'!

Simone Weil

The human soul has need of consented obedience and of liberty. Consented obedience is what one concedes to an authority because one judges it to be legitimate. It is not possible in relation to a political power established by conquest or coup d'etat nor to an economic power based upon money. Liberty is the power of choice within the latitude left between the direct constraint of natural forces and the authority accepted as legitimate. The latitude should be sufficiently wide for liberty to be more than a fiction, but it should include only what is innocent and should never be wide enough to permit certain kinds of crime.
