The Room I wrote in 1957, and I was really gratified to find that it stood up. I didn't have to change a word.

The poem
I wrote a poem that didn't
ryhme,
i wrote a poem that didn't ryhme to the one I love,
i wrote a poem that didn't ryhme to the one I love
more than life,
i wrote a poem that didn't ryhme to the one I love more than life,
of which she did more than like,
the poem was short,
repeated myself alot,
but the one I loved more than life,
felt that love is like the poem I wrote,
full of joy and full of hurt,
the poem I wrote when I was full of hype,
coz the one I loved more than life is the one that now fills in my life all gaps,
the one that brings me up when am down,
a smile on my face from a frown,
music to my ears when we talk,
love in my heart when I'm near,
i wrote a poem that didn't ryhme for the one I love more than life.

A Poem
i wrote you a poem,
that stood naked on
your doorstep,
but you didnt notice...
so i wrote you a poem,
that bled on your kitchen floor,
yet the mop stood untouched
in the corner!
i wrote you a poem,
that set itself on fire
in your bedroom,
and you opened the window.
so i wrote you a poem,
from the land of death...
your tears only an echo,
that couldnt touch...
couldnt taste, couldnt feel...
will you write me a poem?

This Is Not a Motel
The moment you said to me,
You needed more time to find yourself...
I didn't expect to see you back here so soon.
That's why I cleaned out your room.
And sold some things!
The rest,
As you can see...
I threw away.
Oh...
I'm sorry!
I don't mean to be rude.
This is my new lover.
And we are blessed,
Not to have a problem...
Knowing exactly where we are.
You're welcomed to come in...
If you would like to.
'Wow.
I didn't think you would change like this.
So quickly.'
Hey...
What can I say?
If you needed more than twenty four hours...
You should have called.
This is not a motel,
Where you can come as you choose to be serviced.
You needed time to find yourself?
I hope you were successful?

Didnt Know
Didn't know what you had
Until you lost it
Didn't know what you own
Until you got it
Didn't know of your sins
Until you fought it.
Didn't know what you needed
Until you sought it.
Didn't know your lies
Until someone spoke them
Didn't know of the truth
Until someone wrote them
Didn't remembered your dreams
Until someone awoke them
Didn't know they died
Until someone chocked them.
Didn't know you had guilt
Until you cried
Didn't know you felt sadness
Until you tried to hide
Didn't know you felt shame
Until you lied
Didn't know you believed in GOD
Until you asked him why.
Didn't know you felt sorrow
Until you shed a tear
Didn't know that you were scared
Until I saw your fear
Didn't know that you hated
Until you were near
Didn't know that you were unhappy
Until you looked in a mirror.
Didn't know who you truly were
Until your ways you sewed
Didn't know that you were evil
Until the truth was showed
Didn't know you did this before
Until I saw all of your woe
Didn't know who you really were
Though I wished then I did know.

My second play, The Birthday Party, I wrote in 1958 - or 1957. It was totally destroyed by the critics of the day, who called it an absolute load of rubbish.

Change The World
Imagine a place only your soul can vision
The heart of a child who looks, sees, and listens
Paints a picture using every color
And what she sees she sees it like no other
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
If everyone would stop and listen
The art of innocence makes so much sense
Of a place there no wrong has well then it's wasted
Filtered through the eyes of a pure mind
A one of a kind, paradise for you and I, you and I
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
If everyone would stop and listen
Break the cycle, find your rhythm
Share the gift that you've been given - Love
You can, You can Change The World
You can Change The World with love
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
If everyone would stop and listen
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
If everyone would stop and listen

Even Shakespeare Didn't Learn How To Fly
I love you
But i hope you know that by now
I feel many things it's hard to sum them up
But this feeling just sorrounds me somehow
I'm trying my best to tell you
I want you to know so much
It's making me cry
Realistically all problems aside
Even Shakespeare didn't learn how to fly
Noone can put love into word
It's a magic noone can achieve
I can't explain this feeling to you
It's so tragic it's making me bleed
I live for you and care for you
More then you could ever know
But even the greatest writer can't put into words what we know
Realistically all problems aside
Even Shakespeare didn't learn how to fly
Not one word i have wrote is a lie
Even Shakespeare didn't learn how to fly

The Word
Find the word, understand the word,
Depend on the word;
The word is heaven and space, the word the earth,
The word the universe.
The word is in our ears, the word is on our tongues,
The word the idol.
The word is the holy book, the word is harmony,
The word is music.
The word is magic, the word the Guru.
The word is the body, the word is the spirit, the word is being,
The word Not-being.
The word is man, the word is woman,
The Worshipped Great.
The word is the seen and unseen, the word is the existent
And the non-existent.
Know the word, says Kabir,
The word is All-powerful.
Take It Where You Find It
Men saw the stars at the edge of the sea
They thought great thoughts about liberty
Poets wrote down words that did fit
Writers wrote books
Thinkers thought about it
Take it where you find it
Cant leave it alone
You will find a purpose
To carry it on
Mainly when you find it
Your heart will be strong
About it
Manys the road I have walked upon
Manys the hour between dusk and dawn
Manys the time
Manys the mile
I see it all now
Through the eyes of a child
Take it where you find it
Cant leave it alone
You will find a purpose
To carry it on
Mainly when you find it
Your heart will be strong
About it
Chorus:
Lost dreams and found dreams
In america
In america
In america
Lost dreams and found dreams
In america
In america
In america
And close your eyes
Leave it all for a while
Leave the world
And your worries behind
You will build on whatever is real
And wake up each day
To a new waking dream
Take it where you find it
Cant leave it alone
You will find a purpose
To carry it on
Mainly when you find it
Your heart will be strong
About it
Repeat chorus
Change, change come over
Change come over
Talkin about a change
Change, change
Change come over, now
Change, change, change come over
Im gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
Im gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
Im gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
Im gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
I see my light
See my light
See my shining light
I see my light
See my light
See my shining light
Repeat chorus two times & fade

Dear John
(vocals by john prine)
When i woke up this morning
There was a note upon my door
Saying " don't make me no coffee, babe
Cause i won't be back no more"
And that's all she wrote
"dear john", i sent your saddle home"
Now jonah got along in the belly of a whale
Daniel in the lion's den
I know a guy that didn't try to get along
And he won't get a chance again
That's all she wrote
"dear john", i sent your saddle home"
She didn't forward no address
No she never said goodbye
All she said was "if you get blue
Just hang your little head and cry"
That's all she wrote
"dear john", i sent your saddle home"
Now my gal's short and stubby
She's mean as she can be
If that little old gal of mine
Ever gets a hold of me
That's all she wrote
"dear john", i fetched your saddle home"
Went down to the bank this morning
The cashier said with a grin
I'm sorry for you little john
But your wife has done been in
That's all she wrote
"dear john", i sent your saddle home"
That's all she wrote
"dear john", i sent your saddle home

Why You Doing This To Me? ?
Didn't I say I love you, didn't I?
Yes, You did, you did.
Then tell me why, how this happened
What I did wrong, tell me why!
Can't we just go on peace
and forget this dreadful dream?
Won't you say why you hate me, won't you?
No, I won't, I won't.
parley! !
It's no fair, I am here.
Didn't you say you like me, didn't you?
No, I didn't, I didn't.
Then please just say the word I will leave
say it, please say it.
don't slay me for this long
don't, please don't! .
I can't imagine anything!
did I say I love you, did I?
I know, yes I know you got many problems!
who doesn't have in this spiteful world!
ignoring a problem won't make it vanish
is banishing me without reason a solution?
No I won't do it, I won't, so please don't! ! !
let it eat my flesh as a bait!
how much of it is my fate?
how much of it depends on the choices I make?
how much do I have to regret for that I have made?
could I go back and change it! ? could I?
you see your face in the mirror?
how much of it will be different?
how much of it would be original?
how could you say it?
how could you say if you close your eyes?
say to stay back I will pay
I was not on a side to sway
I have got nothing to leave away
but got something, the same thing
which I had before.
I am sorry, this is the undefined moment
so I will let myself to go off.
it is such a crap to alter the things
which were laid on the lava.
but it isn't as I got nothing to feel it.
I want to talk to you,
could you come down please!
I am not gonna eat you,
I just want to talk to you! !
I promise I won't do it again,
again if then I am sick
leave for the rest.
leave for the rest in the resolution
to find not the solution but
the peace for you.
It's quite sure it could change the life
either way it is! !
so lets not worry
as it is pure, and it's sure
and it is inevitable.
come back
no, you non sense
please comeback
these are the things which would be best if you leave alone
yes it is, but it would still be there
it would be still there! !
what should I do, please say, please say...
what should I do? ? ? ?
please say, please say....
why you doing this to me, please say, please say...
why? ?
why? ?

The Death of the Hindu
Chin cupped
on the ancient bone
of his elbow
he spread five fingers to the world:
and like a cat on zither strings
the hoarse voice of his fathers
issues from his forgotten children:
now he picks one tick
from the back of that suckling cow:
his failing fingers
find not the strength to crush
Not a single eyelash twitters
pass him by
pass him
'Wake not a man asleep
And tell him he has
Nothing to eat.'

It was a good 15 or 20 years before anyone at Rand would be in the same room with me. They didn't want the question raised, 'What's your relationship with Daniel Ellsberg?' And not one of them wrote me a letter because they didn't want a letter of theirs to show up in my trash - which the FBI had been going through.

Didn't Mean To Fall In Love
I didn't mean to fall in love
I didn't mean to fall in love
And all I mean to say
I can't go on the way things are
How can I lead the way
It feels so wrong to be so far away
Ooh, from you tonight
If I, if I lose you, I can't survive
Didn't know you would've come tonight
Didn't hang on long enough
Didn't want to go and start a fight
Didn't mean to go, go and fall in love
It's like an avalanche
Once you fall you're swept away
I didn't stand a chance
Hangin' on every word you say
Hey, we can find a place for love
Ooh, do you want it bad enough
I didn't mean to fall in love
I didn't mean to fall in love
So could you catch a plane
Come back home for one more try
I'll never be the same
I fell so hard out of the sky today
For you, you see
And you would never believe what you do for me
Can't you see you're all I need
Didn't know you would've come tonight
Didn't hang on long enough
Didn't want to go and start a fight
Didn't mean to go, go and fall in love

Legends, Elegies, Pleasures And Norma Jean
The man who wrote Legends of the Fall
Wrote; 'Don't fall in love as if fallin' off a dock at night'
But when you are struck by the thunderbolt
How do you not fall?
The man who wrote the Duino Elegies
Wrote; 'Beauty is only the start of bearable terror'
But to be stuck without beauty
Is unbearable
The woman formerly know as Norma Jean
Wrote; 'I know from life one cannot love another'
I know what she meant, but to love you
How can I not?
The man who wrote The Pleasures of Hope
Wrote; 'How hard it is to find the one just suited to our mind! '
But it is just a little too easy to find one
Who is ill suited
From Legends, Elegies, Pleasures and Norma Jean
What they wrote is unforgettable
And that is what you are muse, though near or far
In every way

The Abused Wife
She drive's into her neighborhood
Her heart starts racing
She knows he's been pacing
She can't explain what took so long
She knows she won't be understood
He won't listen to what she has to say
He will be so angry that she didn't stay
She only went to the corner store
He will blame her for so much more
He will accuse her of meeting a man
She hurried so fast, she almost ran
He will scream and slap her across the room
Break things, even beat her with a broom
If she's lucky only bruises this time
Or sent to the hospital because of this slime
He will beg her forgiveness and to take him back
He's so sorry, he says for that last whack
He's not ever going to change
His promises won't last the long range
He will send her flowers, maybe jewelry too
So she will forgive him, and not be so blue
He'll say he's so sorry, won't happen again
Why did you make me do it? He will begin
Loving him so much she will risk her life
He said he didn't mean to cause her strife
Don't believe a word he says, all lies like the past
The promises he makes aren't going to last
Believe in yourself, you can make it alone
Take your life back, without a broken bone
People that haven't been there don't understand
You have so much fear, under such a demand
You are a good person and deserve so much more
Than being slapped around and kicked to the floor
You can always find help from people who care
Or you can file charges, he wouldn't dare
Abusers don't change, their lies just get better
I've been there too, that's why this letter
