The United States and Mexico are trapped - economically, culturally, politically and because of drug crime - in the same continent.

The United Conference of Hemispheres
How about...
The United States?
'No.
That's what we're called now! '
Oh...
You're right.
I forgot.
Well..
How about,
The United Federation of Americas?
'Hmmm...
Now that does have a ring.
With Canada, Mexico...
And the current United States.
I like the sound of it! '
Or...
How about,
The United Western Hemisphere?
'YES!
That's brilliant.
We'll have a meeting this weekend,
To discuss it!
But we must go slowly with this.
The people are already going nuts over the economy!
But I do love this idea.
We'll have the United Northern Hemisphere.
The United Eastern Hemisphere.
And the United Southern Hemisphere.
Whenever we come to meet...
We'll call ourselves,
The United Conference of Hemispheres!
Pass that by President Obama.
See if he approves before the announcement is made!
We must consolidate all nations as soon as possible.'

More than one-third of Mexicans in the United States own property in Mexico, nearly 80 percent send money home and 25 percent have a spouse in Mexico. Assimilation and becoming an American citizen are not the objective for many of them.

But last year there were 540,000 people, roughly, detained coming across the border illegally. Forty-five thousand of them came from countries other than Mexico, demonstrating the fact that Mexico itself now is a pathway into the United States for people all around the world, and we don't know what their intentions are.

Under current law, there is no additional penalty for someone who enters the United States illegally and then commits either a crime of violence or a drug trafficking offense. They simply come under the same penalty as we have in current law.

Influenza is a serious disease. Kids die of influenza, both in Japan and the United States, and if you give a drug to people who are at risk of dying, there will be people who die who got the drug,... There is no signal the drug is doing it as opposed to the disease.

Day of the Refugios
In Mexico and Latin America, celebrating one's
Saint's day instead of one's birthday is common.
I was born in Nogales, Arizona,
On the border between
Mexico and the United States.
The places in between places
They are like little countries
Themselves, with their own holidays
Taken a little from everywhere.
My Fourth of July is from childhood,
Childhood itself a kind of country, too.
It's a place that's far from me now,
A place I'd like to visit again.
The Fourth of July takes me there.
In that childhood place and border place
The Fourth of July, like everything else,
It meant more than just one thing.
In the United States the Fourth of July
It was the United States.
In Mexico it was the día de los Refugios,
The saint's day of people named Refugio.
I come from a family of people with names,
Real names, not-afraid names, with colors
Like the fireworks: Refugio,
Margarito, Matilde, Alvaro, Consuelo,
Humberto, Olga, Celina, Gilberto.
Names that take a moment to say,
Names you have to practice.
These were the names of saints, serious ones,
And it was right to take a moment with them.
I guess that's what my family thought.
The connection to saints was strong:
Mu grandmother's name--here it comes--
Her name was Refugio,
And my great-grandmother's name was Refugio,
And my mother-in-law's name now,
It's another Refugio, Refugios everywhere,
Refugios and shrimp cocktails and sodas.
Fourth of July was a birthday party
For all the women in my family
Going way back, a party
For everything Mexico, where they came from,
For the other words and the green
Tinted glasses my great-grandmother wore.
These women were me,
What I was before me,
So that birthday fireworks in the evening,
All for them,
This seemed right.
In that way the fireworks were for me, too.
Still, we were in the United States now,
And the Fourth of July,
Well, it was the Fourth of July.
But just what that meant,
In this border place and time,
it was a matter of opinion in my family.

OLD McPFIZER HAD A PHARM
Old McPfizer had a pharm
Ee eye ee eye oh
On that pharm he made some drugs
Ee eye ee eye oh
With Prozac here and Ambien there
Here a drug, there a drug
Everywhere a drug-drug
Old McPfizer made big bucks
Ee eye ee eye oh
Old McPfizer sold his drugs
Ee eye ee eye oh
With no regard for “Side effects”
Ee eye ee eye oh
With depression here and suicide there
Here a death, there a death
Everywhere was death-death
Old McPfizer killed with drugs
Ee eye ee eye oh
Old McPfizer paid big fines
Ee eye ee eye oh
Then he stood trial and went to jail
Ee eye ee eye oh
With a crime here and crime there
Here a crime there a crime
Everywhere a crime-crime
Old McPfizer did some time
Ee eye ee eye oh

Who Was She?
They say she must have been no good,
She must have been a whore,
Or part of a drug gang,
Who she was working for.
No one knows who killed her,
They're all too scared to ask,
No ID, and the guy who shot her,
Was wearing a skeleton mask.
Her lifeless body on the ground,
Took a bullet to the face,
The fact she was shot in the plaza,
Only adds to the disgrace.
No journalist will report WHY she died,
Too afraid to write that line,
The police report simply lied,
Said she lived a life of crime.
The gunman moved on,
No one got in his way,
She'll be a nameless number soon,
On the List of the Dead Today.
It's tough down here in Mexico,
The Drug War rages on,
30,000 dead and counting,
Petrified by what is wrong.
She could have been a drug mule,
Or a school girl walking home,
Surrounded by corruption,
She lay there all alone.
Drug Lords run this country,
Protected by the cops,
With kickbacks to the army,
Drug traffic never stops.
