I always enjoyed playing ball, and it didn't matter to me whether I played with white kids or black. I never understood why an issue was made of who I played with, and I never felt comfortable, when I grew up, telling other people how to act.

Never Played-Symphonies

Reflecting from my death bed
I'm balancing life's riches
Against the ditches
And the flat grey years in between
All I can see are the never laid
That's the never-played
Symphonies
I can't see those who tried to love me
Of those who felt they understood me
And I can't see those who
Very patiently
Put up with me
All I can see are the never laid
Or the never-played
Symphonies
You were one
You meant to be one
And you jumped into my face
And laughed and kissed me on the cheek
And then were gone
Forever
But not quite
Black sky in the daytime
And I don't much mind dying
When there is nothing left
To care for
Anymore
Just the never laid
That's the never-played
Symphonies
You were one
You meant to be one
And you slipped right through my fingers
No, not literally
But metaphorically
And now you're all I see
As the light fades

Someone Made the Decision

Why do people leave,
From places once felt comfortable?
Someone made the decision,
To perceive themselves...
The end result of another's happiness.

And with a growing obnoxiousness,
Believed they could well afford...
Began to ruin the atmosphere.
And those who 'had' enjoyed it once,
Made it clear...
They could easily take away with them,
A peace of mind no one had bought.
Or sought to provide its growth to share.

That's why people leave,
From places once felt comfortable.
And that is why so many grieve,
When they believe what was done to please...
Has eventually left them alone,
To entertain their own sorrows.

My Ace Of Such A Black Heart(Revised In Line Form)

Dear you know who.
I'm writing again.
For better or worse.
My card has been played.
Its my ace of such a black heart.
Forgive me for I don't look my best.
I've been through some stress.
Its what I use when I need to confess.
Its what, its what I use when I'm abused, confused.
No matter how much you hurt me I'll never lose.
For my mind is mine.
Rain or shine, everything will be fine.
But I must go I'm running out of time.

Dear you know who.
I'm writing again.
For better or worse.
My card has been played.
Its my ace of such black heart.
It never sways. No matter, how many hip hip hoorays.
It takes it place like a disease.
The fuel, the fire.
To burn, to urn.
What you want is what you need.
Just to breath, just to see.
Again and again.
I ask forgive me for my miss deeds, that lies in the malcontent of my heart. Be careful how hard you fight, how succulent you kiss.
Because love takes you, makes you, breaks you.
Tares you in two.
I'm fighting myself.

Dear you know who.
I'm writing again.
For better or worse.
My card has been played.
Its my ace of such a black heart.
I think I should of stayed.
But that wasn't the way.
You keep telling me it'll be okay.
But I know what I gave to the depraved.
I feel so indifferent.
My body goes numb.
I was dumb down the very last bone and now I must deal with this alone.

Ziggy Stardust (acoustic Live)

Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Weird and Gilly
And The spiders from Mars, he played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy's band
Ziggy really sang, screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan, he could lick 'em by smiling
He could leave 'em to hang
Came on so loaded man, well hung and snow white tan
So where were the spiders
While the rats tried to break our balls
Just the beer light to guide us
So we bitched about his fans
And should we crush his sweet hands, oh
Ziggy played for time, jiving us that we were voodoo
The kids were just crass, he was the nazz
With God given ass
He took it all too far but boy could he play guitar
Making love with his ego
Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper messiah
When the kids had killed the man
I had to break up the band, oh
Oh yeah, ooooooh
Now, Ziggy played guitar

The Weekend Blues Session

Three days and three nights
playing the guitar blues of life
my mind and body taken back

I can see
the old streets and the seats
where the blues players of old
used to meet

They'd sing of the pain
and the hate
and we'd respect what they
had to say

All these memories coming back
as we played for the times
when blues was our life

We played for the joy
we played for our minds
we played for our souls
we played until the monday morning blues

When I Was Young

When I was a young I was impressionable
I believed everything to me that was told
But then suddenly in miracles I stopped believing
That was the day that I grew old.
I now do not believe in any miracle
As I was taught they do not or cannot exist
From the complex creation of any life
To the formation of a tiny cyst.
So no longer do I walk in amazement
That is created by our world and nature all around
I now know everything can be explained
From a slight touch to the hearing of a sound.
When I was a boy I played with toy soldiers
I played with toy guns and I even played war
But then I grew up and reality it sat in
Now those games I play them no more.
Seashells they do not speak the ocean
The end of a rainbow it holds no pot of gold
Wishes cannot be granted by the first star at night
Sometimes I wish that I didn't grow old.

Innocent Dreams

A white man was at a playground
pushing his son on the swing
'Look son, ' said the white man
'Never play with that....thing! '
The black man and his son ignored them
and kept swinging instead
Until the white man faced him
and said,
'Look at your skin color
what do you see?
A different color thats what
You're different then me
You talk different, act different
And walk different too
You dont belong here nig**r
None of your kind do.'
The black man told his son to go play
And turned back his head
He didnt want to cause a fight
So this is what he said,
'From one man he created all
The nations throughout the whole Earth
God created people in his own image
We are brothers from birth.
There is nothing wrong with us
We are the same as you
A different color shouldnt matter
What should matter is what we do
And the people that treat us like we're not human
And the people that dont want to get along
Hopefully one day will understand
That what they did and do is wrong
Something to remind you
That made alot of hopes beam
Is a song quoted
from a man that had a dream

My country 'tis of thee,
Sweet Land of Liberty,
Of thee I sing:
Land where my father's died,
Land of the pilgriom's pride,
From every mountainside
let freedom ring.

The white man was shocked
At what he had to say
He wanted to get his son
And just get away
He yelled for his son
Commanding him, 'Let's go! '
But his son didn't come
He didn't even show
The black man pointed
in the direction
As he watched the two boys playing together
with love and affection.
The black man asked,
'Are you going to yell at your son?
Or are you going to leave him be
And let him play with my boy
to have some fun?
Now watch those two
What do you see?
Two children alike
Like you and me.'

To Stay The Best Of Kids

I have played with my children the same way,
On a daily basis.
Everyday.
And...
For most of their lives I have been in sight.

So do not try to reprimand me,
About my inability to be a good parent.
I raised my kids the best I could,
To be good children and nothing more.

'And...
Who played the role of the adult?
While you and your children played,
To stay the best of kids,
Most of your lives? '

That Old Piano

On a lonely corner of an old house
A permanent feature for a decade
An old piano played the living witness
Of singing and dancing till the wee hours
in the morning

Grandma and Mama made the house turn around
Playing old familiar boogie, waltz and mambo sounds
Kids just played around
Munching goodies, cookies and cakes

Oh, ... those happy days
Seeing that old piano, the living witness
Holding back these tears
But life is what is all about..

A Boyhood Sporting Hero

Most boys have their sporting heroes and mine played Gaelic Football
The mighty Mick O Connell the greatest I recall
But Mick O played for Kerry and Cork my favourite team
And to play football good as him was many school boy's dream

The finest Gaelic Footballer that I have ever seen
Not rough or hard in any way but classical and clean
And though that was many years ago and far so far away
Of great player from Valentia the memory with me stay.

When Mick O's playing days were over he faded from the scene
But memories of his playing feats will remain evergreen
His high fielding and kicking and his passing of the ball
The complete Gaelic Footballer the greatest of them all.

He never hogged the limelight he seemed so quiet and shy
But he was sporting hero to many school going boy
And even many who did not support Kerry will still tell you today
That Valentia's Mick O Connell was the best they had seen play.

My hero played for Kerry and Cork my favourite team
And to be good a player as him an early teenage dream
But as a Gaelic Footballer I never made the grade
And I won't be remembered for any game I played.

Ball Of Confusion

(b. strong/n. whitfield)
Producer: martyn ware and greg walsh
Album: the collected recordings (94)
People moving out,
People moving in,
Why, because of the color of their skin,
Run, run, run, but you just can't hide.
An eye for an eye,
Tooth for a tooth,
Vote for me and i'll set you free,
Rap on, brother, rap on.
Well, the only person talking about loving thy brother is the preacher,
And it seems nobody's interested in learning, but the teacher,
Segregation, demonstration, intergration, determination, aggravation, humiliation,
Obligation to our nation.
Ball of confusion,
That's what the world is today, hey.
The sale of pills is at an all time high,
Young folks walk with their heads in the sky,
The cities aflame in the summertime,
And oh the beat goes on.
Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul-shooting rockets to the moon,
Kids growing up too soon,
Politicians say, "more taxes will solve everything,"
The band played on.
So, round and around and around we go,
Where the world's headed, nobody knows
Oh, great googamooga,
Can't you hear me talking to you,
Just a ball of confusion,
That's what the world is today, hey.
Fear in the air, tension everywhere,
Unemployment rising fast,
The beatles new record's a gas,
And the only safe place to live,
Is on an indian reservation,
The band played on.
Eve of destruction, tax deduction,
City inspectors, bill collectors, mod clothes in demand,
Population out of hand, suicide, too many bills,
Hippies moving to the hills,
People all over the world are shouting, "end the war!",
And the band played on.
Great googamooga,
Can't you hear me talking to you,
Just a ball of confusion,
That's what the world is today, yea-yea,
Just a ball of confusion,
Tell ya that's what the world is today, yea-yea,
Just a ball of confusion, oh!

Once Upon A Time In America

It was a cold January morning,
all around looked a bit boring.
In Washington’s subway
was the beginning of the ordinary day.
Everyone was in a hurry,
they didn’t want to worry
and didn’t pay attention
to the man I would like here to mention.
The passer-bys didn’t clap
to the man wearing jeans and baseball cap.
They all looked at the clock,
so that to get in time for their work.
It was not a tradition
to listen to a street musician.
That man played his violin.
He didn’t try to win.
He was in his own skin.
Would you like to know?
It was certainly not a show.
But…he played
the most beautiful works of art,
the best musical compositions.
Those sounds could touch anyone’s heart
if they were played in another condition.
Now, I would like to tell.
That man was Joshua Bell,
the famous American violinist.
He didn’t persist on subway’s stage,
He was not in a rage for earning 32 dollars,
playing only 45 minutes.
For a street player it’s a good salary,
considering the USA country.
But…you know what?
There is something I forgot.
Two days before
His salary was insanely more.
For the concert in Boston it was a million
because he was really brilliant.
But…in Washington’s subway
Everyone went away
without hearing his play.
Here is my comment.
It was an experiment
suggested by Washington Post.
I don’t know it’s cost
but I know quite well
we do not hear even the church bell.
We are blind and deaf
And it’s the biggest grief.
One man from that subway’s crowd had said:
He played too loud.

Because We've Kept Our Mouths Closed

While you and I were staring out the window,
Our lives were being played with.
Insignificantly.
As if a ball tossed,
By irresponsible kids.

And because we've kept our mouths closed...
Those balls then were thrown.
Tossed carelessly back to break that window.

With a showing of further disrespect.
And a lot of shouting expected.
With our lives continued to be played.
As if nothing had been heard.
Since we allowed it to be that way!
Because we've kept our mouths closed.
Or mumbled in silence...
To not disturb with bitter words.
For fear of being perceived as mean neighbors.

Now the whole neighborhood is policed,
And monitored.
To keep peace on the streets.

And at one time,
It was easy to blame this on 'them'!
You know...
'Them? '
Who had been 'those people'!

The People I Turn To

i often wonder why i felt so alone,
only cuz the people i wanted to care,
didn't,
they only cared when they wanted to,
but yet,
they try and control your life,
just to gain control of theirs,
it was like i didn't matter,
only when they felt i did,
for so long,
i was trying to please,
the people who never gave a d@mn,
i was pulled in all directions,
cause i didn't trust my way in thinking,
but than it became clear,
the people who are there for me,
are going to stay by my side,
no matter what,
why should,
the people who don't care,
be the people i turn to?
