We had times in '66 and '67 when we would pick up a platoon of privates out of the receiving barracks the week before we even graduated the platoon that we were on!

The LT

LT (pronounced El Tee) was the name used by grunts in Vietnam for a second lieutenant and platoon leader. Sometimes it was used as a mark of approbation, a term of respect for a soldier and leader of men in combat. Too often, however, the term expressed disrespect and loathing for a cowardly soldier, an officer who was incompetent in the field and was afraid to fight. The LT in my story entitled 'Draftee' is one of the latter.

Twenty years old and a recent graduate of OCS, the LT has been assigned to a platoon whose sergeant is twenty years his senior.

Rough Riders took 13 weeks to shoot, plus a week of training. The same guy trained us trained the cast in Platoon. Except, instead of radios, we used bugles to signal.

Even though I disagree with many of the changes, when I see the privates graduate at the end of the day, when they walk off that drill field at the end of the ceremony, they are still fine privates; outstanding, well motivated privates.

The most terrible job in warfare is to be a second lieutenant leading a platoon when you are on the battlefield.

When they ran out of cadre men they gave me my very own platoon and said, 'Here are 63 men, try to keep as many of them alive as you possibly can.' That was one of the more harrowing experiences of my life.

I think as a rifle platoon and company commander your view is about 1,000 meters in front of you and you hope you can cover that ground and not have to back up and give it up again.

I questioned everything. I didn't see a character developed in Platoon at all. The character in Blue Velvet was much more fascinating to me.

We started at once to dig our trenches, half of my platoon stepping forward abreast, the men being placed an arm's length apart. After laying their rifles down, barrels pointing to the enemy, a line was drawn behind the row of rifles and parallel to it.

The day the paratrooper antitank platoon went into action

The day the paratrooper antitank platoon
went into action
stays with me
with a piece of shrapnel
that almost missed my knee,
but grazed it leaving its scrawling mark

and sometimes lovers want to know
about that scar, about the one
just under my chin
and to them
they are almost like tattoos on my skin

but to me they address
a different story
of a war, that most
want to forget now
and of which
I do not know how too.

Army of Ants

Excuse me, Captain
I must disturb you
you and your troops, must leave

This is no place to breed
abundantly
I must clean house
literally

This is no place for a picnic
for you, your platoon, and families
forgive me, I must set this trap
so customers are safe
to eat and drink

Now, if for your survival
I must actually, think
take you outside
so you can breathe
crush you to smithereens
perhaps, even, let you, party on

None the less
you all must go
your ants for crying out loud
my pitiful heart
now full of sorrow

What Her Crystal Ball Says

dark clouds hovering
on the hills of mid-March
and murky waters on the
rivers of the last days
of April,

a platoon of people
comes to your house
asking for rice and
fish bringing with
them their empty
bowls

five cows are thin
seven piglets die
and emaciated
black horses drink
on empty ponds

moses wearing his
rainbow colored coat
perspires under the
sun on a very windy
portion of the dessert
alone and still looking
where the oasis are.

Twelve Months After

Hullo! here’s my platoon, the lot I had last year.
‘The war’ll be over soon.’
‘What ’opes?’
‘No bloody fear!’
Then, ‘Number Seven, ’shun! All present and correct.’
They’re standing in the sun, impassive and erect.
Young Gibson with his grin; and Morgan, tired and white;
Jordan, who’s out to win a D.C.M. some night;
And Hughes that’s keen on wiring; and Davies (’79),
Who always must be firing at the Boche front line.

. . . .
‘Old soldiers never die; they simply fide a-why!’
That’s what they used to sing along the roads last spring;
That’s what they used to say before the push began;
That’s where they are to-day, knocked over to a man.

Military Training

Hearing morning bugle, I rushed to the flag-raising rite.
The ugly cotton-wadded quilt was deemed to be alright.
I was not up to the standard in parade and shooting.
Face with mud; helmet with leaves, I was camouflaging.
After training, all overseas students would be away.
The platoon leader was happy to be on holiday.
Cherishing our friendship, all people must say good-bye.
We drank wine in the graduation party and I did cry.

Nicky Nicky Nicky Nicky Nicky Nick Pick

You can't win the war and the battle cause,
That struggle is in your head.
And kept there seven days a week.
With no sleep there you're reaping.

You can't win the war and the battle cause,
That struggle is in your head.
And kept there seven days a week.
With no sleep there you're reaping.

All you like to do is nitpick my wrongs.
With that constant picking that you see fit.
But only you brood sucking your thumb.
Without that finger licking that you want done!

Seven Days A Week And Tweaked

When I filled to the brim,
Knowing my hip hop days were over.
And mentally I had graduated,
To levels with a taking of my life seriously.
Something within me had to address foolishness.
With a leaving behind several people,
Who still today wish to stay in playful arenas.
And can not seem to find,
A structure that defines order in their minds.
To excuse their choices made as having a good time!
Seven days a week and tweaked to celebrated...
Those times lived.
And how they use to be in those old days long gone,
They can not let go!
