Sitting On A Barbed-wire Fence

I paid fifteen million dollars, twelve hundred and seventy-two cents
I paid one thousand two hundred twenty-seven dollars and fifty-five cents
See my hound dog bite a rabbit
And my footballs sittin on a barbed-wire fence
Well, my temperature rises and my feet dont walk so fast
Yes, my temperature rises and my feet dont walk so fast
Well, this arabian doctor came in, gave me a shot
But wouldnt tell me if what I had would last
Well, this woman Ive got, shes filling me with her drive
Yes, this woman Ive got, shes thrillin me with her hive
Shes calling me stan
Or else she calls me mister clive
Of course, youre gonna think this song is a riff
I know youre gonna think this song is a cliff
Unless youve been inside a tunnel
And fell down 69, 70 feet over a barbed-wire fence
All night!

My Washington Woman

The wages of an unskilled working man never paid enough
From time to time a nickel on a race keeps him from giving up
A blue collared man in Seattle never lives on white collared street
But there was food on the table for my Washington woman and me
The work slowed down and the one day
The foreman laid me off
That night in a tavern down on my last dime
I met a girl from Arkensal
Her daddy was a banker in Little Rock
She had a mansion on white collared street
The next morning my Washington woman woke up without me
From city to city, and state to state, I get her in shame
My Washington woman had six months left
Before out child would bring her pain
That Arkensal woman hurt me
As we crossed the Arkensal line
But the arms of Seattle
Are the arms that kept huggin' mine
For year I have basked in expensive wines
Taste champagne every day
I gave up all the things I loved
For all these things I hate
I locked up all of her forgiveness, the day I set myself free
And the heart of my Washington woman stopped beating for me
My Washington woman sends me a letter every once in a while
Inside a folded wordless page is a picture of my child
All but words, the room grows cold with a feeling of jealousy
And there's a silence between
My Arkensal woman and me

Fifty Cents A Day

I am an humble Soldier
far from my friends and home,
mid scenes of war and hardships
I constantly must roam,
with many officers over me,
and them I must obey,
and do just what they tell me,
for fifty cents a day.

I enlisted in the army
to help my country's cause,
because I loved it dearly,
and would sustain its laws,
I felt a free man's duty,
his country to obey,
I came not as a hireling,
for fifty cents a day

I enlisted as a soldier.
a free man and a man
To do a soldiers duty,
as best a soldier can.
hope to fight the rebels,
and hate this long delay.
I came to help my country,
for fifty cents a day.

I now must yield to hardships
in cold in storm and rain
perchance with scanty rations
not even then complain
the right of seeking comfort
long since I signed away
my life I am slowly losing
for fifty cents a day.

who send the soldiers to the field
to buy his willing hand,
with promises so plentiful,
of treatment like a man?
twas those who, in two days,
received a larger pay
than does the soldiers in a month
at fifty cents a day

who promised to the soldier,
his wrongs should be redressed
if tyanny or officers
should his right oppress?
alas! the sword may smight him,
or kicked around he may be,
he finds his only redress,
is fifty cents a day

who promised to the soldiers,
if sickness should appear,
good doctors and kind nurses
was ready and was near,
to aid him in his feebleness
as quick as though his pay
was ten times as much
as fifty cents a day.

twas those who wear the shoulder straps
with haughty air of grace,
who look upon the soldier
below the negro race,
who thinks a soldier's duty
is only to obey
his lordship, and be content
with fifty cents a day.

how oft I've seen the soldier,
near tottering to the ground,
seek vainly for some friendly aid,
when it could ne'er be found,
when told he was not ailing,
to go and take his way,
one week would end his suffering
and fifty cents a day.

now, how many of these officers
would be here where they are,
if forced to live like soldiers,
and take a soldier's fare?
how few would take the treatment
even with their liberal pay,
let alone the poor pittance
of fifty cents a day

cheer up my gallant soldiers,
be cheerful, gay, and smile,
we'll do the fighting now,
and the voting after awhile,
and then we'll show oppressors
that they may fell dismay,
who treated us as serviles,
at fifty cents a day.

This poem was written by my great, great, great, grandfather when he was a POW in the civil war. He wrote this during the month of December 1863. I wanted to share this with everyone in memory of him.

6. Must Have

Special offers at my superstore
Get bigger every day
With savings on their bulk buys
Reducing what we pay

I bought a pack of toilet rolls
Fifteen’s but paid for twelve’s
It seemed a super bargain
Taking three more from the shelves

Lots of chocolate biscuits
If you buy one get one free
This also seemed a super deal
So I bought another three

If you bought a jar of coffee
With extra you got bigger
Two of those instead of one
Would change our shopping figure

I bought some bread and butter
With a great big leg of lamb
Fifty mini picnic pies
Plus slices of cooked ham

Lots of things I didn’t need
Filled high my shopping barrow
I’d only gone to buy some milk
And I’d even bought a marrow

Paid news, paid degrees, paid titles,
Paid awards, paid felicitations
And the strategic moves count.
The bought judgment culminates all..

Dollars & Cents

Dollars and cents
There are things to talk about
Be constructive
There are weapons, we can use
Be constructive
With your blues
Even when they tore the wall down
Even when they tore the wall down
Why dont you quiet down?
Why wont you quiet down?
Why dont you quiet down?
Why wont you quiet down?
We are the dollars and cents and the pounds and pence. were gonna crush your
Little soul. crush you little soul.

Rain

In Seattle one could count on it!
Barometric pressure falling daily...
With the probalbility of rain-
Oft' times morphing into a steady drizzle
And grayer than gray skies;
In those days, depressive illness ran rife...
Much of it was linked to the bleak weather-
That chilly precipitation that keeps Washington evergreen;
That same miserable rain fell
The day my father died;
Some ask me today, if, i miss Seattle
And, of course, i reply: 'yes'
But, i do not miss that infernal rainfall
That always chilled me to the bone...
That literally dumped from the heavens
On May 7-
Leaving me drenched and oh so alone;

A Few Cents Short

(john michael montgomery)
Looking for spare change
To put gas in my car
But what Ive found
Wont get me very far
Seems lately the low times
Have hit me pretty hard
cause Im a few cents short
From getting to where you are
Im a few cents short
Of holding you in my arms
And a few cents short
Of keeping us from falling apart
Aint it funny how the money
Can change our lives
cause Im a few cents short
From losing you tonight
So I walked to a pay phone down the road
But a few dimes and a nickel is all I had
The operator wants more money
To place my call
But Im a few cents short
If that dont beat it all
Im a few cents short
Of holding you in my arms
And a few cents short
Of keeping us from falling apart
Aint it funny how the money
Can change our lives
cause Im a few cents short
From losing you tonight
Im a few cents short
Of holding you in my arms
And a few cents short
Of keeping us from falling apart
Sure is funny how the money
Can change our lives
cause Im a few cents short
From losing you tonight
Yes Im a few cents short
And Ill be losing you tonight

57 Channels

I bought a bourgeois house in the hollywood hills
With a truckload of hundred thousand dollar bills
Man came by to hook up my cable tv
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched 'round and 'round 'til half-past dawn
There was fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So i hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my japanese car
I came home and i pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Well we might'a made some friends with some billionaires
We might'a got all nice and friendly if we'd made it upstairs
All i got was a note that said "bye-bye john
Our love is fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
So i bought a .44 magnum it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of elvis well i just let it blast
'til my tv lay in pieces there at my feet
And they busted me for disturbing the almighty peace
Judge said "what you got in your defense son?"
"fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
I can see by your eyes friend you're just about gone
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on...

Momentary Contact With This Slight Inconvenience

With trillions of dollars in debt.
There are still some people,
Who are hopeful...
The price of gas will lower below a dollar.
A loaf of bread,
Will be twenty five cents again.
A push cart will be full of groceries...
For less than twenty dollars.
And what is being experienced now,
Is not a crisis!
It's a temporary slugfest...
With someone bashing them over the head,
With a ton of bricks.
However...
This 'momentary' contact with this slight 'inconvenience'
Is being addressed and will be taken care of...
As soon as it becomes recognized as a severe condition!

And folks are hopeful these sentiments expressed,
Are being made in the utmost of honesty!
Their lifestyles will return them to Utopia!

'Oh,
I sure hope so.
We must not accept negative thinking!
You know how that can play tricks on the mind?
Better times are coming back.
The gasoline is 'almost' below four dollars now! '
