As I look back on the last few decades of my life, I am struck by the good fortune that came my way.

Good Fortune
They say to celebrate
you should raise a glass or two,
but if you do not drink
that is something hard to do.
Instead, you can toast
by raising a cup of tea
and light several candles
for the more misfortunate
than you,
and then thank god
for bringing good fortune
to you.
Good fortune may not be money
to line your pockets well.
Good fortune might be the joy
of triumphing over adversity,
or it could be
getting over your fears.
Whatever good fortune
means to you.
You must celebrate
with happiness
and share your good fortune
with everyone
you will meet.

Men Of Good Fortune
Men of good fortune
Often cause empires to fall
While men of poor beginnings
Often cant do anything at all
The rich son waits for his father to die
The poor just drink and cry
And me, I just dont care at all
Men of good fortune
Very often cant do a thing
While men of poor beginnings
Often can do anything
At heart they try to act like a man
Handle things the best way they can
They have no rich, daddy to fall back on
Men of good fortune
Often cause empires to fall
While men of poor beginnings
Often cant do anything at all
It takes money to make money they say
Look at the fords, but didnt they start that way
Anyway, it makes no difference to me
Men of good fortune
Often wish that they could die
While men of poor beginnings
Want what they have and to get it theyll die
All those great things that live has to give
They wanna have money and live
But me, I just dont care at all
Men of good fortune
Men of poor beginnings
Men of good fortune
Men of poor beginnings
Men of good fortune
Men of poor beginnings
Men of good fortune
Men of poor beginnings

Fortune Teller
(neville)
Went to a fortune teller
To have my fortune read
I didnt know what to tell her
I had a dizzy feeling in my head
She took a hold of my palm
She said son you feel kind of warm
And then she looked into a crystal ball
She said youre in love
I said how could that be so
Im not friendly with the girls I know
She said when the next one arrives
You gotta look into her eyes
I left there in a hurry
Looking forward to my big surprise
The next day I discovered
That the fortune teller told me lies
I rushed straight back to that woman
Just as mad as I could be
I said I didnt see nobody
Whyd she made a fool of me
Then something struck me
Like lightning from up above
While looking at the fortune teller
I fell in love
Now Im a happy fella
Im married to the fortune teller
Im as happy as I can be
Now I get my fortunes told for free

The Wishing-Caps
Life's all getting and giving,
I've only myself to give.
What shall I do for a living?
I've only one life to live.
End it? I'll not find another.
Spend it? But how shall I best?
Sure the wise plan is to live like a man
And Luck may look after the rest!
Largesse! Largesse, Fortune!
Give or hold at your will.
If I've no care for Fortune,
Fortune must follow me still.
Bad Luck, she is never a lady
But the commonest wench on the street,
Shuffling, shabby and shady,
Shameless to pass or meet.
Walk with her once--it's a weakness!
Talk to her twice. It's a crime!
Thrust her away when she gives you "good day"
And the besom won't board you next time.
Largesse! Largesse, Fortune!
What is Your Ladyship's mood?
If I have no care for Fortune,
My Fortune is bound to be good!
Good Luck she is never a lady
But the cursedest quean alive!
Tricksy, wincing and jady,
Kittle to lead or drive.
Greet her--she's hailing a stranger!
Meet her--she's busking to leave.
Let her alone for a shrew to the bone,
And the hussy comes plucking your sleeve!
Largesse! Largesse, Fortune!
I'll neither follow nor flee.
If I don't run after Fortune,
Fortune must run after me!

Happily Married Life
I am having my own way
I snorted,
and then the rolling pin struck.
No, you are having your own way,
she was, and she did.
Such is things
in happily married life.
You are doing the dishes
she shouted,
oh no I am not,
and then the rolling pin struck
and I was and I did.
Such is things
in happily married life.
I went to a fortune-teller
to have the bumps on my head read.
She had plenty to choose from
as the rolling pin struck nightly.
Such is things
in happily married life.
We are having sex tonight
she declared.
Not tonight Josephine
I replied.
Then the Viagra came out,
along with the rolling pin,
and we were and we have.
Such is things
in happily married life.
One day I am burning the rolling pin
and we will be miserable once more,
even if I do get a bit bored.
The one thing you have to do
to get a peaceful and happily married life
is have no rolling pin insight.

Fame And Fortune
Sittin' in the back of a limousine, feelin' just like a king
All the girls come runnin' to you, you're the latest thing
Sittin' up there at the top of the charts, lookin' like Mr. Cool
You take all the money, steal their hearts, they'll come runnin' to you
Your fame and your fortune, look what it brought you
All your fame and your fortune, you better take a look around
With your fame and your fortune, careful who you talk to
Or the fame and your fortune, watch it all tumble down, yeah, oh listen now
Now you're lookin' for inspiration, somethin' to say
When you find that it don't come easy, you find them running away
You had it all in the palm of your hand, and let it slip away
You made it big, ooh so big, and then you threw it all away
All your fame and your fortune, look what it brought you
Fame and your fortune, hey you better take another look
At your fame and your fortune, it set you up, then it caught you
Fame and your fortune, surely gonna let you down, hey tell me now
(Solo)
All your fame and your fortune, look what it brought you
Take your fame and your fortune, wait and take a look around
For your fame and your fortune, who do you talk to
'Bout your fame and your fortune, as it all comes tumbling down
Fame and your fortune, fame and your fortune, yes all come tumbling down
Fame and your fortune, fame and your fortune, all comes tumbling down...

I had the good fortune of speaking with Orson Wells many decades ago and he said 'Success is primarily luck anyway.' And I have been very lucky. Of course, Orson Wells was enormously talented and brilliant - so who am I to argue with him!

A waving hand
She was almost there waving hand at me
I smiled gently and felt relieved and free
It was not midnight even and I dreamed of her
I sensed some one standing by and ready to whisper
“Are you taking proper care of yourself and kids”?
I was half asleep and could not get proper lead
It was addressed definitely to me and got restless
I could recollect nothing from a figure surely faceless
It were almost decades she had left us behind
We had no time to recollect past and exactly find
What had gone wrong with our family and suffered?
We picked up all the threads which were offered
Though she remained a centre for all encouragement
We had lot more to do for our future engagement
It was not coming in easy way and I struggled very hard
All suffering and pain I did not prefer even to be heard
Those were critical days with you mom
You were kind and keeping always mum
You had large responsibility to carry on
The success was eluding you and very far gone
I remember tears rushing on your face
It was terrible scene but you were actively in race
You wanted to push me ahead of every one
It was pure sentiment and you wanted to share with none
Let me be very honest in admitting the fault
I was pushed in race which had no pause or halt
It needed constant drive and strict vigil
The success was on card or on anvil
Each success made me hungry for another milestone
For me by gone years were just nightmare and gone
I had no time to look back and curse the luck
I was surging ahead with fortune and got never struck
I was definitely blessed with your wishes
Every venture I started met with good finish
You were behind all and I did my best
I made it point and came over as crucial test
I was left behind you by many miles
Elegant look, good fortune and name now shine
I miss very you nearly as there is no one to embrace
It made me restless as I could not find you or trace
How time behaves in different way?
Keeps you alive to find the fortune or bright ray
It leaves behind everything even your dear ones
It is tales success story inscribed on each stones
I am at ease now
I wonder at and think how?
All it happened over number of years
It rang me when you called me in my ears

I Hear
It is mid night knock and I hear
Lots of pain in body and me silently bear
No use to raise pain voice to bother members
As they are watching my end coming near
I slight open eyes and watch half consciously
The prayers and hymns are heard continuously
They believer that some last words may make my end peaceful
They are sobbing and watching at me with tears full
I had been with them for decades
Now time has come to bade
It is painful saga and stark reality
Helplessness to feel with remorse and pity
No one may say bad words at the back
As many things will be at stake
Someone may be claiming property and fortune
Others may be worried for good days gone
I have love each and everyone
Out side too and not at home alone
I see its impact today as death bell rings
Prayer is on with tears and they all sing
What a bond to feel at the time of heavenly journey!
Nothing accompanies not even relatives, friends or money
Only good will and well wishes at the time of departure
Wishing rest in peace and making it sure
I am half sunk and repeatedly opening eyes
They all lower their heads and desperately try
To hear gentle words if I ever I tried to speak
Strengthen their belief and not make them weak
Yes, it is midnight knock
And I hear heavy foot steps and sound of clock
Both arms have been struck at right 12 o'clock
I am closing eyes as if life is running out of stock

Can't Keep A Good Man Down
Can't keep a good man down.
Well I thought I heard a telephone honey,
And I know it's the man you love.
A-don't try to hide it honey,
You can't keep a good man down too long.
All my life, I have, given in to you.
And all your life, you have, made me a fool.
You can't keep a good man down.
I'll be back up and around.
Bet your life you can't keep this good man down.
Well I try to do the best things for you.
And I know I ain't always right.
And even though I say I'm sorry,
Why can't you treat me right.
And all this time,
You have, said you love me.
And all this time,
Now I, want to be free.
You can't keep a good man down.
I'll be back up and around.
And bet your life you can't keep,
This good man down.
Break
Ooh ooh
Ooh ooh
Ooh ooh
You can't keep a good man down.
I'll be back up and around.
You bet your life you can't,
Oh bet your life you can't
Keep me down,
Keep me down too long.
You can't keep a good man down.
I'll be back up and around.
You bet your life you can't
Keep this good man down.

Have A Good Life Baby
(unknown)
If we knew a way to go back through time
To the place where love was lost
We could take each others hand again
And wander back across
But we always seem to end up here
Tryin not to say goodbye
Baby, we dont have to say the words
Words can sometimes make you cry
Ooh, have a good life baby
Take good care of yourself
Have a good life baby
Be happy with someone else, mmm, mmm, ooh, hoo, hoo, hoo, mmm
This time we really will let go
And we wont look back again
But pretend the sun is on a rise
When the day is at an end
So, lets kiss and wish each other love
Over one more sip of wine
Oh, honey, try to give me one last smile
And Ill leave you one of mine
Ooh, hoo-oo, have a good life baby
Take good care of yourself, ah, ha, ha
Have a good life baby
Be happy with somebody else, ah, ha, oh
Ooh, hoo, hoo, hey
Have a good life baby
Take good care of yourself, ahh
Have a good life baby
Hope youll be happy with somebody else, oh, baby
Have a good life baby
Take good care of yourself, ah, ha, ho
Have a good life baby

The bad fortune of the good turns their faces up to heaven; the good fortune of the bad bows their heads down to the earth.
I Should Be Doing So Much More
I should be doing so much more, the Christian saint confessed!
This truth had struck him to the core, he thought he'd done his best!
But truth be told, he watched TV... He tuned in day and night!
Three hundred channels there to see, some still in black and white.
He'd doze off in the afternoon for hours at a time...
Play catchup 'neath a silvery moon and think his life sublime!
The late night films would make him pray, yet never to complain...
He read the papers every day, the same sins yet again...
He didn't like the Government and yet he'd never vote!
Of course, folks thought he was a gent... He'd never rock the boat!
But God looked down and Jesus sighed... The Holy Spirit groaned...
Was it for this that Jesus died and all his sins atoned?
Alas, the decades soon rolled by... without the tithe God sought.
Alas, the man was soon to die, much younger than he'd thought!
And up to Heaven this man flew... his good works to assess.
Alas, his good works were so few... They BOTH failed to impress...
Denis Martindale, copyright, February 2011.
Based on Howard Conder's Q and A Show
in which he told us of the fruit that lasts for eternity,
the good works that are purely done for Christ.
He said, one day we'd look back on our lives and say,
'If only I'd done more...'

Life Journey Cosmic Leagues Long
a cosmic journey
beginning
with a single step
already on the journey
decades into it speeding
decades from departure
left while
no one
was watching
noticing
everyone drinking
talking
away
life dreams
drunk

Good To Be Back
Written by pam reswick/steve werfel

Let me look at you, just look at you
Youre a sight for sore eyes, yes you are
If you knew how many nights I spent holding you so tight
Then Id wake up and were still apart
Now youre really near and Im really here
And I can wrap my arms around you, yes I can
This is just like I remember, no I think its even better
Maybe even more than I can stand
Baby, its good to be back, so good to be back
Baby, its good to be back in your arms again
Baby, its good to be back, so good to be back
Honey, its good to be back with you, oh yeah
Well its not the first time weve been apart
But as far as Im concerned its the last
I dont care what we have to do to stay together from now on
But those days away from you are past
cause when I go through the day and I havent seen your face
Seems like nothing that I do feels right
Youre the one I wanna see when I wake up every day
Youre the one I wanna kiss goodnight
Baby, its good to be back, so good to be back
Baby, its good to be back in your arms again (ooh)
Baby, its good to be back, so good to be back
Honey, its good to be back with you
So good, so good, so good, so good, so good with you, baby
So good with you
Why dont you start me up with just one kiss
Thats just one of the things Ive missed
You better kiss me once again til it finally settles in
Well, I think I could get used to this
Baby, its good to be back, so good, so good to be back, real good
Baby, its good to be back in your arms again, I just got to say it
Good to be back, so good to be back
Honey, its good to be back with you
Baby, its good to be back, feels mighty good to be back
Baby, its good to be back with you
Baby, its good to be back, so good, so good to be back
Aw honey, honey its good to be back with you
And its so good to be back, aw sing it girls
Yeah, good to be back, I like the way you sang
Baby, its good to be back in youre arms again
Sang, sang, sang, sang
And its so good to be back...

I Wish That I Could Have Stayed In My Twenties
Life seemed so good when I was in my twenties
Before time left me looking old and gray
I used to play Soccer and Gaelic football
And I could run and chase the ball all day.
I was never much good at soccer or Gaelic football
Though like many others I too dreamt of fame
But I did not play for esteem and honours
I only played because I loved the game
I wish that I could have stayed in my twenties
Life is much better for those in their prime
But on looking back three decades passed so quickly
And one can't turn back the hands of time.
It has been said that with gray hairs there's wisdom
But as often is the case it isn't so
Some people as they age they grow less tolerant
And they seemed to have more wisdom years ago.
The best years of my life were in my twenties
When I could run and chase the ball all day
And don't tell me that in gray hairs there is wisdom
When it is more of a sign of ageing and decay.
