If I never sang on a record again I can still look at my walls. They are covered floor to ceiling with gold and platinum records from all over the world.

Blackheart Records being 25 years old represents staying power and the fact that we weren't able to get a record out through conventional means, so we had to create this record company to put out our records if we wanted to be a band that had records to give out to their fans.
One Mans Ceiling Is Another Mans Floor
Words & music by paul simon
Theres been some hard feelings here
About some words that were said
Been some hard feelings here
And what is more
Theres been a bloody purple nose
And some bloody purple clothes
That were messing up the lobby floor
Its just apartment house rules
So all you partment fools
Remember: one mans ceiling is another mans floor!
One mans ceiling is another mans floor
Theres been some strange goins on
And some folks have come and gone
Like the elevator man dont work no more
I heard a racket in the hall
And I thought I heard a call
But I never opened up my door
Its just apartment house sense
Its like apartment rents
Remember: one mans ceiling is another mans floor!
One mans ceiling is another mans floor!
Theres an alley
In the back of my building
Where some people congregate in shame
I was walking with my dog
And the night was black with smog
When I thought I heard somebody
Call my name
Ah-- remember: one mans ceiling is another mans floor!
One mans ceiling is another mans floor!

0027 That Baker Boy
and allowing that
records only record what’s recorded –
that’s, written records – the sounds are something else -
the records say
that for most of your waking life
you were out of this world on drugs
or when you weren’t, you behaved
appallingly; excepting when you sang and played,
when, all agreed, you were ‘out of this world’..
and yet, you wrote an autobiography
or should we say memoir, that is,
what you might remember, which
is a catalogue of innocence, of purity,
of life as good, well lived…
so I would not like to be
your prosecuting counsel, taking you through
this litany, each deed, each word..
I don’t think I could bear the pain..
was it what you really thought you were,
or what you would have wished to be?
I’ll settle for the love you whisper
in the ‘standards’, convincing us they’re holy writ;
pausing just where truth itself would pause;
and blowing the truth that finds and speaks itself
between the lips and lungs and trumpet’s mouthpiece;
like some ancient seer or sibyl, shaman, visionary,
speaking, singing, truths which yet you do not know
or have forgotten. It seems that genius knows
the greatness of the art of which it is
(apt phrase) the mouthpiece; and all else
is of this world; subservient.

When it all started, record companies - and there were many of them, and this was a good thing - were run by people who loved records, people like Ahmet Ertegun, who ran Atlantic Records, who were record collectors. They got in it because they loved music.

The Darkness
For sometime I’ve been living by myself
and as usual I close the windows at night.
I was sitting on the bed reading a letter
when something darkened the light.
My immediate thought was a power surge
and the house was on a reduced supply,
but when I looked up at the ceiling light
I just couldn’t believe my eyes.
So much so, I rubbed them,
and hoped that it wasn’t there,
but it was, hovering above me
like a mist hanging in the air.
I’d never seen anything like it,
from nowhere it came into sight.
An expanding layer of darkness
that was squeezing out the light.
It had now covered the ceiling
and was edging down the walls.
My breathing wasn’t helping,
as my inhaler began to stall.
I could feel and hear my heart beating;
fear drove me towards the open door.
As my fingers touched the doors handle
its sudden slamming shook the floor.
If it touched me what would happen?
Would I be blanked out like the light?
I stumbled flicking off the light switch,
and with it went the cause of my fright.

Nicklin’s Torment
I woke up in a cold sweat
and turned on the light.
A shadow was moving over me,
cast by a spider of the night.
By the time I’d blinked
it’d vanished from view,
but then I saw a larger one,
followed by another two.
I closed my eyes for a moment
hoping they would disappear.
When I slowly reopened them
the bedroom was spider clear.
With my hand I mopped my brow
and then saw several more,
they were crawling on the ceiling
and marching across the floor.
I told myself that I was dreaming
or suffering from withdrawal,
but that didn’t stop the spiders
from crawling up the wall.
Sweat dripping from my brow
was stinging in my eyes.
Spiders were now on my bed
at my feet and on my thighs.
The whole room was full of spiders,
on the ceiling, walls, and floor.
My bed was covered and so was I.
I screamed stop! But out came even more.
Spiders crawling on top of spiders,
in my mouth, nose and ears,
their scary eyes staring into mine,
I was choking with utter fear.
I tried in vain to fight them off,
but my hand didn’t move a one.
I must have blacked out just then,
when I awoke they had all gone.
Things are becoming better now
and the spiders are getting less.
I’m told they’ll eventually go for good,
along with my shakes, thirst, and mess.

I Dont Wonna Know
I dont wonna know
I dont wonna know
Your eyes were covered
In sunglasses
When they first met mine
I sat there and started at you
You didnt seem to mind
The arkward ways we meet
First comes heavy breathing
Staring at the ceiling
What will happen next
I dont wonna know
I never cared how I dressed before
But I cared that night
Anticipation ran through my bones
And my clothes never fit right
I cant wait till we meet again
First comes heavy breathing
Staring at the ceiling
What will happen next
I dont wonna know
Framed pictures start to appear on the walls
Constant visits while Im out on the road
Its hard to leave sometimes
But you know where I lay my head at night
First comes heavy breathing
Staring at the ceiling
What will happen next
I dont wonna know
I dont wonna know
(I dont wonna know)
First comes heavy breathing
(First comes heavy breathing)
Staring at the ceiling
(staring at the ceiling)
What will happen next
I dont wonna know
I dont wonna know

We made records to document ourselves, not to sell a lot of records. I still feel that way. I put out a record because I think it's beautiful, not necessarily commercial.

I've been around for such a long time. My first hit record was over 20 years ago and the people who bought my records then are married now and they probably still play these records and their children like them.

A House Without Stairs
do not say
that without the stairs
the house is not a house anymore
without the ceiling
the more the house becomes to me
take the roof
if you want
or the beams
or even the floor and window frames
my house will still be a house
the sky its roof
the stretching grassy plain its floor
all the stars become
my magnificent ceiling
whatever is taken
we must imagine that all things are still there
lest we only have a house
that crashes on the floor
with all of us
dead
crushed to the death of
our imaginations
a door without an exit
because you have not seen hope coming
the lock and key
are all in the mind and heart

I Want to Bang
It's been a long time
Since I've done that 'thang'.
You know...
What people do
When they get together and screw?
And the bed makes a noise,
That shakes the walls, floor and ceiling too!
I want to 'bang'!
Yes I do!
I'm admitting that.
How about you?

In the spirit of Rumi - 65 - The Housefly
So small,
such a tiny eye,
yet sees, has seen, so much
to be a housefly
in the house of the Lord,
a house without walls, without ceiling,
without floor?
I wonder.

People weren't buying as many records. My record company did not want me. I went through three record companies, went on tour at the wrong time. It destroyed me.
