What could be more convincing, moreover, than the gesture of laying one's cards face up on the table?

The Lover And The Gamber
She sat on a bar stool,
her long legs dangling there,
drinking a coloured mix,
they called The Country Fair.
He sat at a table,
deck of cards in his hand,
laying them down for a game of solitaire,
the lover and the gambler.
For a brief few seconds,
as they looked around,
their eyes met in sweet seduction,
in that smoky bar downtown.
As the evening wore,
and customers began to leave,
it just left the two of them there,
the lover and the gambler.
Now if he played his cards,
close to his chest,
maybe with a bit of luck,
love would do the rest.
They looked again,
with a long lingering look.
She joined him at the table,
watched the hand that he dealt.
Each card was a heart;
cupid caught them both that night.
For now the lover and the gambler,
are now man and wife.

A House Of Cards
A house of cards
Is neat and small:
Shake the table,
It must fall.
Find the Court cards
One by one;
Raise it, roof it, -
Now it's done: -
Shake the table!
That's the fun.

In politics, strangely enough, the best way to play your cards is to lay them face upwards on the table.

Amuséd and Unbuttoned
Our cards are on the table,
All my Aces are face down,
My Poker Face practised, perfect,
In for a penny or a pound?
Now the sweat beads at my temple,
I've misused my Aces High,
By sneaking one off the table,
And pressing it to my thigh.
I am not a cheat by nature,
I would win if I showed my hand,
But unveiling what's deliciously hidden,
Was always part of my plan.
You've got me where you want me,
I unbutton and strip without pause,
'A game well played' you whisper,
'I'll show you mine, since you showed me yours'

THE Cards
All cards are marked it's a game of chance
Fate collides leading us a merry dance
Slight of hand very quick
Nine or twenty one card trick
Luck never gives it only lends
Playing the cards always contends
Fate never looses it deals so svelte
It was always to be the hand that was dealt
So now all cards are marked
And all fates will collide
When at the table you next reside.

In the spirit of Rumi - 70 - Grace
Like a fine cloth for the table:
its strength, its appropriateness,
the twist and spring of its fibers,
the love and care of its making,
(and how eagerly it launders!)
all reveal themselves even while
you’re unfolding it, shaking it out;
while you’re laying it with a graceful gesture
like a magician whisking away the magic cloth
to reveal a transformation… like
a bullfighter dramatically spreading before the bull
the blood-coloured illusion of a prey…
like a mother quietly prepares a meal…
like the morning or the evening mist
rolling over the edge of a mountain plateau…
like a gentle rain in Spring falling as mercy itself…
it gives up the air trapped under it as you laid it down,
like the heart's lungs surrendering to peace
with a grateful sigh;
and as you smoothe it out on the table
it murmurs love to your hand;
and as you stand back,
it shines; awaits whatever may come to it,
waits as if it had always been
just where it is now
grace

Give Me A Call
Ooh you draw such pictures in my head
Ooh with so few words I know what you said
Until the time comes
To carry the one
Make that dream real
And be sure it stays done
So let that thought
Bloom in your mind
A vision thats caught
Never left behind
You should just give me a call
You should just give me a call
I think about you much more than I should
Now theres a structure nothing had once stood
No more bluffing its cards on the table time
What it must be we will take it as a sign
So just give me a call
So just give me a call
Sunset and my love left me
winter and Im so far
In darkness will it lead me
where the meanings are
I miss and think of you often
no flowers I forgot them
the weathers the same
nothing happens
no loves a hard lesson
patience and years will refashion
what hours will undo
and circles not yet quite circles
somehow close true
I keep on hearing the things that you said
I keep on feeling you go straight to my head
No more bluffing its cards on the table time
What it must be we will take it as a sign
So just give me a call
So just give me a call
I call you up but you wont talk to me
No space for words theres just no room
I drift away but you pull me in
Im the ocean youre the moon
Ooh how do I know if its just me
Sometimes I think that it must be
You gotta know you can trust me
I think about you much more than I should
Now theres a structure nothing had once stood
No more bluffing its cards on the table time
What it must be we will take it as a sign
So just give me a call
So just give me a call
So just give me a call
So just give me a call

Grandma
Grandma wish you were here
the walks and the talks and playing with chalk
make me miss you most
sitting around the table playing cards
watching you dance the cards around
listening to the stories of old
boy, do i remember them well
it's been years since you gone to a better place
I miss you so
trips to the store, we enjoyed
Miller's Store small, but busy
tell me about the candies we will buy
butterscotch was our favorite
Grandma, I miss you so
thanks for sharing your stories
being my friend, giving me time
I will always have you in my dreams
walking to the store, dancing cards
love you so, missing you most
Grandma's gone, but her soul is here

Willing & Able
Said Im willin and Im able
Im ready 2 place my cards on the table
Ive been holdin back this feelin
4 far 2 long
Now that Im willin, its a fact
Is truly mighty strong
Like a child lost in the wilderness
till I reach my destination, I wont rest
Cuz Im willin (willin)
And Im able (able)
Im ready 2 place my cards on the table (table)
Theres some kings in my deck and a queen or 2
So u know there aint nothin,
Nothin that I wouldnt do (nothin that I wouldnt do)
It twas a long time coming,
But now that its here
All the non-believers better fear me
Cuz Im willin (willin and able)
And Im able
I got good and plenty cards
2 place on the table (table)
Been holdin back this feeling 4 far 2 long
(been holdin back this feeling 4 far 2 long)
Now that Im willing, (this feelin)
This feelin
Its truly mighty strong (truly, i... I)
Im willing (willin)
And able (able)
My vision is all clear, Im feelin kinda stable
U know I am, u know I am
Ready 2 whisper (whisper, whatcha say)
Ready 2 shout (shout, now whatcha say)
Ready 2 scream (scream, now whatcha say)
From the highest mountain top (whatcha say, whatcha say)
Lord, Im willing and able
I wanna dance and sing, somebody watch me do my thing
(willin)
(able)
(willin and able)
(willin)
(able)
(willin and able)
I wanna dance and sing, somebody watch me do my thing
(dance and sing, let me watch u do your thing)
(bring it to me)
Let me take a bite
2 see if ure ripe
Im kinda thinkin about
Takin a hunk, chunk
A piece of your love tonight
Well hello, mc t on a mello
Swing low to the tempo
As I flow on a roll
Here we go, willing and able
Start the show right
With that type of hype
Lay my cards on the table tonite
Dont take me light
My flow hits u just like a lead pipe
While Im clockin
U just say fess
About the boots Im knockin
It aint like that
[somethin to keep the jimmy so get] off my back
In fact u lack the knack
Step back before I show u how a fool acts, baby
Yeah

Money Laughs
i shoot an old man
with my camera
taking a tired face
inside my monitor
for posterity of misery
i shoot the old man
telling him that financial aid
is coming from the
United Nations
the old man sheds some tears
i guess
to be more convincing
money is a very
efficient film director
i shoot an old English professor
who is dying
of attention
and then i talk to money
and money laughs
finally convincing me
that it can always change
the mood of anyone
even my own
some kind of pretension

Sitting On The Edge Of The Ocean
(ronnie scott/ steve wolfe)
Producers for bonnie: hugh murphy/ ronnie scott/ steve wolfe
You asked me to come
And so here I am
Has everything gone
According to plan
Dont know what to play
But something still burns
As soon as we touch again
That feeling returns
A little confused
But better by far
To be lovers again
cause thats what we are, its like
*Im (just) sitting on the edge of the ocean
Walking a very fine line
Laying my cards on the table
Got to be honest this time
Im just sitting on the edge of the ocean
Telling it all to the sea
Baby, you know that I love you
But I want you to know that Im me
I knew him before
Before I met you
He was my first love
So what could I do
Ive opened my heart
Now you know it all
You want me to stay
Youve only to call, its like
*repeat

To My Friend
we meet again
and we play this game of cards
we talk about something else
some misfortunes
longings
regrets as you shuffle the cards
for another
game today
we drink
not on the same glass
we do not clink
the edges anymore
like the excitements of
past marriages
the kiss
for the bride
that the guests did ask
the throwing of the bouquet
the biting of the garter
the slicing of the
cake
& the dance and the
merrymaking of the night
till morning
my friend, i have laid all my cards
on the table
no aces, no kings
just the numbers
and i will be losing to you again
but it does not matter
what matters most
is this meeting
of our present
and future
your hands your smile
the comfort of a second home
a life extended for another turn
a hum
a whistle a brush of friendship
that must last
for my lifetime
thank you very much.

Its My Shadow
Who is that upon the stairs
Acting like he dont know where
And who is laying down all the cards
And giving me the wrong things to say
And like a wheel on the table
Hes a cain to my abel: oh.....its my shadow
A confessor to my dreams casting ribbons round my feet oh.....into my day
Its my shadow
Making eyes until the sun lights the daytime as she comes oh..... into my day
Happy in the time when I would have been there to see you
Happy in the time when I would have been there at all
Happy when the night is gone and I believe you
Happy when the night is gone and I need a call.
Who is chasing in the wind all the letters never sent
And who is dusting down the stars and giving me the wrong moves to make.
And like a wheel on the table, hes a cain to my abel
Dancing upon the floor, its my shadow
Making eyes until the sun blinds the daytime as she comes oh.....into my day
Its my shadow
Like a willow to my stream casting heaven round my feet oh.....into my day.
When you find that things are getting wild is that
The hardest smile that you can ever feel.
Paralysed until the sun lights the daytime as she comes.
And if my shadow comes a creeping
Then Ill always find me sleeping in the sun.

I never want to sort of put all the cards on the table all at once, because that's somehow there's always a journey to go on. There's always something to be revealed, in my mind, about characters.

A Table For Two!
Flash of dream overcome me
as I took slumber one night
I saw a romantic setting
lies a set of table for two
A bouquet of red roses
decorate at the center
where a bottle of red wine
completes the table for two
I saw you entered the haven
dressed in rainbow colored suit
your face so pretty with a smile
as we kissed at the table for two
Mesmerized by your countenance
I was filled with romantic stance
as we danced to the tune of love
such so divine at the table for two
Awaken at height of joy
I am filled with inspiration
as today it becomes a reality
a table for two on Valentines day

Hope
When I do not understand the darkness,
the things that prison you away from me
at places where no light can fall
it’s as if my whole life is extradited
to the one or other power
which destiny claims as its own
and I am just another player
who in Black Jack can count cards
but this is a totally different game
where the power of destiny
and of luck
always has the upper hand
and at times like in Hearts
you fold
and put your cards down on the table
and not always
are dealt the right, the best hand
by forces which you do not comprehend
are forced
to keep on playing the game
while life keeps on
dealing out new cards
and at times the loss is far greater
than you can comprehend
and you loose the hope
of a new tomorrow, of deliverance
somewhere along the way
and wonder about the hope,
the power of love.

Deck Of Cards
a deck of cards
missing the Jack of Hearts....
a revolver on the table,
one chamber empty...
an old family Bible,
the inscription page torn out...
a broken pane in the window
that the sun never hits.
a bottle of whiskey,
half empty, or half full.
an old rug by the chair,
that the dog slept on.
a grandfather clock,
hand stuck at midnight...
an old truck, broken axle....
a deck of cards...
your deal!

True luck consists not in holding the best of the cards at the table luckiest is he who knows just when to rise and go home.
Laying next to you
Laying next to you,
Hearing you breathe,
Watching you suffer,
Watching the blood tears run down your face,
I can’t wash away your pain,
You can’t wash away my endless sorrows,
Laying next you feel as if I was laying down alone,
Watching you walk away,
Watching you leave out of my life,
It hurts me inside,
My endless sorrows made me cry,
I try hard to not show it,
To show what you mean to me,
Laying next to you makes me feel all warm inside,
Just talking to you makes me have butterflies in my stomach,
Just watching you smile makes me smile,
Just watching you fade away makes me wanna hurt myself,
One thing I ever wanted in life was you.
