I know that if I went to other studios, like in Vancouver, that those are set up to be as professional and as true, so it's just a different flavour, it's a different sound, but I think both have their place.

There is a lot of use of ProTools in professional studios, but this is mostly for the special effects it allows, not for sound quality. These special effects soon fall out of fashion, and I don't think this trend will define studios permanently.

A toast
There's wine in the cup, Vancouver,
And there's warmth in my heart for you,
While I drink to your health, your youth, and your wealth,
And the things that you yet will do.
In a vintage rare and olden,
With a flavour fine and keen,
Fill the glass to the edge, while I stand up to pledge
My faith to my western queen.
Then here's a Ho! Vancouver, in wine of the bonniest hue,
With a hand on my hip and the cup at my lip,
And a love in my life for you.
For you are a jolly good fellow, with a great, big heart, I know;
So I drink this toast
To the "Queen of the Coast."
Vancouver, here's a Ho!
And here's to the days that are coming,
And here's to the days that are gone,
And here's to your gold and your spirit bold,
And your luck that has held its own;
And here's to your hands so sturdy,
And here's to your hearts so true,
And here's to the speed of the day decreed
That brings me again to you.
Then here's a Ho! Vancouver, in wine of the bonniest hue,
With a hand on my hip and the cup at my lip,
And a love in my life for you.
For you are a jolly good fellow, with a great, big heart, I know;
So I drink this toast
To the "Queen of the Coast."
Vancouver, here's a Ho!

Vancouver Shakedown
Nazareth
We only came here to play rocknroll
Share some times with some people we know
Drink some wine
Give us some time
We aint no wise boys we aint no fools
We tried to play clean and keep to the rules
We take and we give, just playin our gig
But we got laid over
Ya we was done over
Somebody tell us whats goin down
Dont need another vancouver shakedown
Six miles high, six miles along
Chasin the sun weve come to sing you a song
Deliver our goods
Were just rocknroll dudes
All these behind us, and one more to go
Fly to vancouver, to do the lastshow
Its got to be good, like we know that it should
But we got laid over
Ya we was doneover
Somebody tell us whats goin down
Dont need another vancouver shakedown

Studios were just run differently. There really was a head of a studio. There were people who loved their studios. Who worked for their studios and were loaned out to other people and everybody sort of got a piece. Well now there's a handful now.

Crazy (A Suitable Case For Treatment)
Can you help me
Help me get out of this place
Slow sedation
Ain't my style ain't my face
Givin? me a number
Nine, seven, eight
Gimme back my name
Crazy
But I don't think that I can see
You can hear them
Only talkin? at me
Livin? on the outside
Lookin? inside to be free
Feel so good for awhile
You don't know why
Cry while you lie
You are true...you are true...you are true
Save me
Is there nothing that I can use
Please believe me
Am I conforming to your views
Promise you anything
Watch me cryin? out to you
Gimme back my name
Let me make my statement

Part of the success of This American Life, I think, is due to the fact that none of us sound like we should be on the radio. We don't sound professional; we sound like people you would know.

When the major studios flourished many years ago, an actor was groomed, developed, and worked frequently at his craft. The studios really took care of their actors.

Television studios bet the farm on reality shows, where they didn't need any actors and movie studios had no plans for any quality movies that required the presence of me.

It's just hard. I wish the studios felt there was more value in these themes and these pieces of material - that they're worth protecting more. Because then it just wouldn't happen. If the studios cared, the stuff would be stopped in a second.

Canada is the essence of not being. Not English, not American, it is the mathematic of not being. And a subtle flavour - we're more like celery as a flavour.

Tart
Hear silver trumpets will trill in Arabic streets of Seville
Oranges roll in the gutter
And you pick them up
And peel back the skin
To the red fruit within
But the flavour is
Tart
And the flavour is
Tart
Is it something you crave?
And you say that you only feel bitterness
When you know it's a lie, lie, lie
Wild with a blackberry bush
There were blossoms of cherries to crush
There, at the edge of the asphalt tempting fingertips
They stain your hand, press too hard
They'll colour your lips
But the flavour is
Tart
And the flavour is
Tart
Is it something you crave?
'Cos you say that you only feel bitterness
Would it kill you to show us a little sweetness?
Repeat chorus
Odd, where nothing else grows
It was something like love that she chose
Always a creature of habit
When pity would do
She wore down that heel with no feeling
She kept on her shoes
Repeat chorus
Nylon was hung from a peg
And a kohl black seam ran down her leg
Fishermen look for their nets
And send their regrets
The bug lay there broken
She spoke, "Is this some kind of joke?"
But the flavour is
Tart

Professional Crastination
Cant u see how easy it becomes
Procrastinate, were professionals
Get things done, you cant, too busy
Having fun were professionals
Professional crastination its a way
Of life if youve got lots of time
Put it off cause tomorrow sounds
Much better than today
Always late, not sometimes, occasionally
Consistently, were professionals
Professional crastination were living
In a procrati-nation
Why cant we ever be on time?
Professional crastination its a way of life
If youve got lots of time
Professional crastination were living
In a procrati-nation
Professional crastination
