String theory is an attempt at a deeper description of nature by thinking of an elementary particle not as a little point but as a little loop of vibrating string.

In the book, I make the point that here we have string theory and here we have twistor theory and we don't know if either one of them is the right approach to nature.

Six String Music
Six string music
By: jimmy buffett, g.e. smith
1994
Turn off the t.v.
Turn off the crap
Kick off your high heels
Climb up in my lap
Chorus:
And Ill play music
A song from me to you
Simple six string music
A ballad or the blues
No interruptions
>from the telephone
Dont need call waitin
Just you and me alone
Chorus:
And my six string music (six string music)
A song from me to you
Simple six string music (six string music)
A ballad or the blues
Oh I remember that night in africa
My daughter and my little guitar
Straddling the equator
The king of zanzibar
Those shy black hidden faces
They didnt know me from adams cat
But the words and the singin
And the people in a ring
And the whole night went like that
Now some folks like icing
Some folks like cake
Some swim in the ocean
Some paddle in a lake
Well you can get into beethoven
Or you can groove on jimmy reed
But keep it simple stupid
All we really need is
Chorus:
Six string music (six string music)
A song from me to you
Simple six string music (six string music)
A ballad or the blues
Six string music (six string music)
Aint no symphony
Its just six string music (six string music)
So elementary

It's indeed surprising that replacing the elementary particle with a string leads to such a big change in things. I'm tempted to say that it has to do with the fuzziness it introduces.

String Theory describes energy and matter as being composed of tiny, wiggling strands of energy that look like strings. And the pitch of a string's vibration determines the nature of its effect.

As you say, the way string theory requires all these extra dimensions and this comes from certain consistency requirements about how string should behave and so on.

According to String Theory, what appears to be empty space is actually a tumultuous ocean of strings vibrating at the precise frequencies that create the 4 dimensions you and I call height, width, depth and time.

Technically you need the extra dimensions. At first people didn't like them too much, but they've got a big benefit, which is that the ability of string theory to describe all the elementary particles and their forces along with gravity depends on using the extra dimensions.

String Of Lies
I've got no politics no influential friend or two
I've got ideas but it's nothing I picked up at school
I might be running but I'm never running back to you
And here's a letter from the real world I don't expect you'll reply
And anything you're gonna tell me it's just another lie
I had to wait so long that weeks and months that passed me by
You've got no power and my situation don't apply
You ask me how I am I lie and say I'm doing fine
And with your sugar sweetened alibi there was a truth I never knew
And all the attitude you gave me it's coming back to you
String of lies it's always compromise with you
String of lies you know there's nothing left to do
String of lies it's been a string of lies with you
And here's a letter from the real world I don't expect your reply
And anything you're gonna tell me it's just another lie
String of lies we always compromise for you
String of lies you know there's nothing left to do
String of lies it's been a string of lies with you
String of lies we always compromise for you
And here's a letter from the real world

Please Dont Drag That String Around
(words & music by blackwell - scott)
You like to keep me dangling on a string
cause you know without you my life dont mean a thing
So I beg you
Please dont drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
Oh, tell me, what would I do then
Keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end
Yes, Im your puppet, my heart is in your hand
One twist of the wrist and I jump to your command
So I beg you
Please dont drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
What would I do then
Baby, keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end
I feel inside me, as sure as anything
One day Ill mean more to you than a puppet on a string
So I beg you
Please dont drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
Oh, tell me, what would I do then
Keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end

Enthusiasm is everything. It must be taut and vibrating like a guitar string.
A Stray Kitten
In the spring he toyed with her
her ball of string was long
she tossed it high and higher
gamboling along.
In summer they were lovers
passionate and hot,
her ball of string was short,
she'd found a lover's knot.
By Autumn love had cooled
she found she'd lost allure
The string she'd played with
frayed and tore away.
By winter she'd been ousted
she shivered in the snow.
Her ball of string was cut
and she, a little kitten, froze.

God Particle
A God Particle has the name, Higgs Boson.
Higgs Boson gives mass to a particle.
A particle nearby acquires more mass.
The mass of a particle is the amount of matter.
Matter, unknown of the Universe is missing energy.
The energy missing or dark is 94% of the Universe.
For the Universe and its creation, Higgs Boson was the cause.
The cause of the Universe was the God Particle.
The God Particle gave mass to even dusts where there're all gods.
The gods of all the religions were born out of this particle.
But this particle is a wonderful invention.
This invention will hurt the minds of the priests.
The priests won't nod to the Big Bang Theory.
The theory may solve the universal mystery.
The untied mystery will make the priests angry.
Their angry will make them refuse the single God Particle.

String-a-long
String-a-long, string-a-long, thats what I am
String-a-long, string-a-long, thats what I am
String-a-long - thats all I am is just your
String-a-long someone that you just seem to
Bring along, whenever you are all alone
And need some company you always turn to me
String-a-long - thats all I do is sort of
String-a-long you never seem to notice
Im along although I hope and pray that
You will need me someday
All I ever do - is tag along with you
No matter where you chance to roam
Im just satisfied - to be by your side
Here - there - near - far - I wanna be anywhere you are
Treat me wrong and maybe soon youll lose your
String-a-long, someone may come and bring a
Love thats strong and wanna string-a-long with me
Break:
All I ever do - is tag along with you
No matter where you chance to roam
Im just satisfied - to be by your side
Here - there - near - far - I wanna be anywhere you are
Treat me wrong - and maybe soon youll lose your
String-a-long someone may come and bring a
Love thats strong and wanna string-a-long with me
Ill find somebody new - wont treat me like you do
Ill find somebody new - wont treat me like you do
Ill find somebody new - wont treat me like you do

Just A Piece Of String
i am just a piece of string
nothing important
an appendage to your
purse that contains
the coins
i am just a piece of string
tying something that opens
choking something
that breathes
i am just a piece of string
but i like also to be free
may i ask that you
throw me away?

Even before string theory, especially as physics developed in the 20th century, it turned out that the equations that really work in describing nature with the most generality and the greatest simplicity are very elegant and subtle.

I've Got The World On A String
I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life - I'm in love
I've got a song that I sing
I can make the rain go
Any time I move my finger
Lucky me, can't you see - I'm in love
Life's is a beautiful thing
As long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so-and-so
If I should ever let it go
I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life - I'm in love
Life's is a beautiful thing
As long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so-and-so
If I should ever let it go
I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
I'm walking around with my head in a clouds
And I'm feeling so good
I don't want to come down
And I'm shouting it out
I'm in love

I've Got The World On A String
I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow,
Got that string around my finger
What a world, what a life,
I'm in love
I've got a new song I sing, I can make the rain go,
Anytime I move my finger, lucky me, can't you see?
I'm in love
Life's a wonderful thing, long as I hold that string,
I'd be a silly so and so, if I should ever let you go
I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow,
Got that string around my finger, what a world, what a life,
I'm in love
Life's a crazy thing, long as I hold that string,
I'd be a silly so and so, if I should ever let you go
I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow,
Got that string around my finger, what a world,
man this is the life,
Hey now I'm in love
