Distinctly American poetry is usually written in the context of one's geographic landscape, sometimes out of one's cultural myths, and often with reference to gender and race or ethnic origins.

A Poem Which Makes No Reference To Poetry
A POEM WHICH MAKES NO REFERENCE TO POETRY
A poem which makes no reference to poetry
And does not wonder who and what the poet is-
A poem that makes meanings of life outside the world of its own self- reflection-
A poem that is what life is
In some far and different way-
That poem
Waiting elsewhere
Written by someone else
So great in its beauty
And so powerful in its light
That poem written by someone else
About something I know nothing about
In a way I never dreamed or imagined
That poem is not written by me
And never will be.

From reading a previous answer, you know that I consider all those aspects to be part of American cultural myth and thus they figure into good American poetry, whether the poet is aware of what he is doing or not.

An act of poetry
Ruin is what we need –
Despair is what we feed
Upon in poetry
A shock resets the nerves –
Helps remould the curves
Of written art
Catharsis helps portray –
Acting out a play
On expurgation
Tears or hidden fears
Release the bottled years
To ink a page:
The pen be our salvation.

Among the American contemporaries I read with most enjoyment are several North Carolinians. I think the best poetry being written these days is being written by Southerners.

Gertrude Stein is interviewed on American poetry
and there was the knocking on the door
that we were expecting
and it was the man
that we were expecting
with the questions we were expecting
to which answers were expected
by those who expect answers
as if life were like that
which for writers it is not
yes, tea was drunk
and after tea the tape recorder set up
so that what I said
I would continue to say
somewhere else
even when I changed my mind
here and nowhere else
and he said Ms Stein
what do you think of American poetry
and we said well it's American
and it's poetry
that's as it should be
and really that's all there is to say
and the man looked disappointed
so we asked him did he read poetry
and he said poetry no I dont read poetry
but my editor does
so I said it's really about Americans
living their lives
that's what American poetry is really about
because Americans move around
and so their words move around and
words in English have lost their intensity
but American words are always on the move
and they are more intense
yes, Americans living among Americans
and talking to their neighbours
if it's not about that
it's not really American poetry at all is it
if it's not about that
then why bother writing poetry
and the man was asking about a rose
being a rose being a rose and we said
for a hundred years the rose
has not been red in poetry
but now for the first time in a hundred years
the rose is red again
and the man looked at his watch
and said thank you Ms Stein
and was switching off his tape recorder
and a month later that
was what we said
in a magazine much read
by Americans who mostly
are not poets no very few but we said it
we know that this is so
because we read it there
and we think that really
that was all there was to say
because that was all we think
is really important
about American Poetry
that the words move like Americans move
and that is exciting for a writer
and that is the important thing about
American Poetry

Get Ethnic
(rap:)
Lying here in the sun just trying to get a tan
Trying to find a look to go with the plan
Everyones different
Everyones go their thing
Spinman give me a rhythm...swing, swing
You dont have to dance alone
You get on the floor and make yourself at home
Do anything you want to do
Its alright... its all up to you
(ethnic chorus):
It doesnt matter what skin youre in
Baby let the groove begin
Get ethnic...all day
Get ethnic...all night
gonna chill and ride the day out
People let me tell you what its all about
Get ethnic...all day
Get ethnic...all night long
(talk):
Walk my way!!!
Talk my way!!!
This is a new direction
Were gonna take it to the street
Spinman throw down a funky beat
Ooh sweet
Dont really care where you come from
You may move to a different drum
Jump right in and take you place
Were all part of the human race
(ethnic chorus):
Like you mama do
And your daddy too
Its an attitude
(ethnic chorus x 2):
Everybodys different
And we all have a song to sing
Spinman do your rhythm thing...swing...swing
Spinman do your rhythm thing...swing...swing
(ethnic chorus):
Cmon cmon baby
Smooth me out
Smooth me out
(chant fade).

On The Goddess Of Poesy
The Goddess of Poesy the Goddess of Song
To the Universal immortals she surely belong
The poets of the World her praises do sing
The gift of poetry to their souls she does bring.
The poets to write poems Goddess Poesy inspire
And of singing her praises they don't seem to tire
The poetry of sorrow the poetry of joy
The poetry of youth of the young girl and boy.
The poetry of youthfulness and of growing old
Of young women in their prime lovely to behold
The beauty of Nature the birds and the bees
The mammals and fishes of land and of seas.
The Goddess of poets of every gender race and creed
For their inspiration to write in her lives her they need
Of love, life and Nature she inspires poets to write
For the lovers of poetry to read and recite.

Off The Tracks Of Peace
From hostage to rasisms,
But the myths of love live on;
And like a poetry of freedom in the land of war! !
But the hostage of the myths had led us all off the tracks of peace.

I Have Written My Poetry For The Day
I HAVE WRITTEN MY POETRY FOR THE DAY
I have written my poetry for the day
I can rest-
But there is no end to it
When it wants to come-
And why should there be an end to it now?
One day there will be
Without my trying.
Let my poetry come then
Let some song in me be free
Let whatever feeling I have
And especially whatever joy
Say itself-
Come now my words
Tell me again
Life is good.

I presume that nobody will deny the positive aspects of the North American cultural world. These are well known to all. But these aspects do not make one forget the disastrous effects of the industrial and commercial process of 'cultural lamination' that the USA is perpetrating on the planet.

When women ruled the planet
When women ruled the planet a long time ago,
Emotions where expressed easily, not like now.
Men protected children and hunted during the day,
the helped move heavy objects that got in the way.
Now soon, the myth about God being a man
would come in,
even the Devil who was all sin.
Cultural myths would make God almighty
and to be feared,
that how people are taught and reared.
Conversations with God which is a great book,
you can read all about this topic when you have a look.
