Freddie Mercury

In the early days, we just wore black onstage. Very bold, my dear. Then we introduced white, for variety, and it simply grew and grew.

I Grew My Hair Out

I finally grew my hair out.
I had tried before, but it frightened me.
It grew large, thick, black and wavy,
The hair my ancestors gave me.
They wore it long and free.

I finally grew my hair out,
And a friend said 'You look like a Greek god.'
And I said 'Which one? '
And he said 'I don't know. The chubby one that drank wine.'

And I thought about red wine
And the delighted laughter of women
About the hooves and horns
That I'd hidden inside my head
And had forgotten about, before I ever knew them.

But they were there all along, waiting.
Then I grew my hair out.

The misfortune of the old

Who else will protect me as I’m too old?
I begot a son, who grew strong and bold.
Fully secure in his hand, I grew bald.
Alas! I couldn’t die before he grew old.

Last Dance With Mary Jane

She grew up in a Indiana town,
Had a good lookin' mama who never was around.
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night.
Well she moved down here at the age of eighteen,
She blew the boys away; was more than they'd seen.
I was introduced and we both started groovin'

When we grew apart

You say we grew apart
but I can't not say...
'babe, you threw ya heart'
where did it go?
I know,
it was when you told your white lies
it was when you stood in the white snow.
It was when you grew into a woman.
It was when I saw you smile
babe we grew apart
but for me it was only for a while.

Grew Up Fast

We grew up fast
And no one seemed to notice
We grew up fast
And we grew up alone
Mom and dad
Were never what we wanted
We grew up fast
And we grew up alone
We grew up along
Well you know who I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
Well you know what I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
You never act like that with no one else
We grew up fast
When lies were just a fact of life
We grew up mad
Cause we never had a home
We faced the past
And forgave the revolution
We grew up smashed
And we grew up alone
We grew up alone
Hey my brother
I got no fight with you
I just cant lie down
Hey my brother
I got no fight with you
I just cant lie down
No, I just cant ride down
I just cant ride down
Well you know who I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
Well you know what I am
So dont act like Im something else
Well you know who I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
You know where I am
So dont act like Im somwhere else
You never talk like that to no one else
You never scream like that for no one else
You never suck like that for no one else

Little White Rose

Little white rose that I loved, I loved,
Roisin ban, Roisin ban!
Fair my bud as the morning's dawn.
I kissed my beautiful flower to bloom,
My heart grew glad for its rich perfume—
Little white rose that I loved!
Little white rose that I loved grew red,
Roisin rua, Roisin rua!
Passionate tears I wept for you.
Love is more sweet than the world's fame—
I dream you back in my heart the same,
Little white rose that I loved!
Little white rose that I loved grew black,
Roisin duv, Roisin duv!
So I knew not the heart of you.
Lost in the world's alluring fire,
I cry in the night for my heart's desire,
Little white rose that I loved!

Without Regret

Saddened memories,
I once held as property.
Who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

I now reflect,
Without regret.
I know now
Defeats I've met!
But who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

Those times
Stayed on my mind
For days at a time.
I used that to feed,
My own desperate needing.

I lived with anger and deceit!
I felt those feelings deep,
Within me!
Defeats I have met!
But who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

But...
Who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

Who knew,
Like I do now...
When they grew,
Somehow
They would go...
From inside of me!

Blissful Life

Over Parshington, a white stroke flew
Carrying a baby to where Africa grew
He was taken to a vast family of six
A family of black and white all a mix
He grew up in dearth, beginning by birth
But nothing stopped him ever, being a blissful mirth
He tilled the soil and asked for toil
And lived in grains forgetting his pains
He prized his time and saved his dime
And lived a life worth greater than words

Over Parshington, a white stroke flew
Carrying a baby where Africa grew
In looks he was poor, but inside he was pure
He was worthy of every touch
And worthy of the lot much
He lives a life of pleasure
Having love as his biggest treasure

Over Parshington, a white stroke flew
Carrying a baby where Africa grew

Jimmy Jet And His TV Set

I'll tell you the story of Jimmy Jet--
And you know what I tell you is true.
He loved to watch his TV set
Almost as much as you.

He watched all day, he watched all night
Till he grew pale and lean,
From 'The Early Show' to 'The Late Show'
And all the shows in between.

He watched till his eyes were frozen wide,
And his bottom grew into his chair.
And his chin turned into a tuning dial,
And antennae grew out of his hair.

And his brains turned into TV tubes,
And his face to a TV screen.
And two knobs saying 'vert.' and 'horiz.'
Grew where his ears had been.

And he grew a plug that looked like a tail
So we plugged in little Jim.
And now instead of him watching TV
We all sit around and watch him.

Woman Made Of Love

Woman Made Of Love
a woman from above
made from some distant heaven
made and fashioned somehow differently
than most of them
a woman made of love
a woman made of solid stuff
she decided to have a secret beau
so she hid him in her heart
but he grew cold
so she grew bold
and they both grew old
in talking love together
now he is bold and never cold
and she is never old
for in warming him she is now better
a woman made of love
she has her beau for ever
and they have love

Autobiography

My father made the walls resound,
He wore his collar the wrong way round.

When I was five the black dreamscame;
Nothing after was quite the same.

When I woke they did not care;
Nobody, nobody was there.

In my childhood trees were green
And there was plenty to be seen.

When my silent terror cried,
Nobody, nobody replied.

I got up; the chilly sun
Saw me walk away alone.

My mother wore a yellow dress;
Gentle, gently, gentleness.

The dark was talking to the dead;
The lamp was dark beside my bed.

Come back early or never come.
Come back early or never come.
Come back early or never come.
Come back early or never come.
Come back early or never come.
Come back early or never come.
Come back early or never come.
Come back early or never come.

Black and White (Stream XV)

I have black thoughts,
It is a black day,
A day when the black dog
Coal black, hovers at my shoulder.
I shoulder the burden.
Deep in the black hole.
Black as a black hearted night.
Negative.
Stark.
Black and white.
I do not call my good days white days.
Why?
Or have white thoughts
On a white day,
When the white dog
Pure white sits upon my shoulder.
Which is unburdened.
Out of the pit,
Luxuriating in the bright white light;
White as the purest snow.
Positive.
For we live in a too white world
Maybe we should have grey days,
And light days.
Why should Black be negative and White poitive?

For me then, today is a grey day.
Maybe tomorrow will be a light day.

All our morning glory days are done

All our morning glory days are done
just like the flowers
that you made me rip out
from where they grew
towering under the sun.

The garden is empty
and stripped of the violet flowers
that grew everywhere
and I am no longer there

and wonder if the geraniums,
irises, marigolds, white lilies,
red roses and lavender
are still being watered

or is every thing in your life
just fading away
into death
with the falling leaves
of this autumn?

My Healer Baby

MY HEALER BABY

Dating is a white butterfly,
Its separations are black,
My soul is a sad child
Grew in charity with lack.
My graceful poor baby,
Who dream is wounded, baby.
Looking at stony roads,
My hopes grew into roads.
I burnt, my ashes grew,
Into a flower of luckless dreams.
A companion to the dream, my baby,
Whose joy is wounded, my baby.
Love is water in the stream,
Has run beside you flowing.
Seeing your weak state also
Hasn't gone a moment of waving
From pains suffers, my healer baby,
Whose faith seems victorious, my baby.

Blue Black

Eat your words, eat your heart out
Eat your words, eat your heart out.
Theres not much left, just my red dress
Just this feeling that I got
You made me a victim in your christmas kitchen
Its my memory its your loss.
Blue black, maybe you got something
But the flowers grew back.
And was it familiar when you touched my sister
God, I dont think theres a word for that.
Blue black, maybe you got something
But the flowers grew black.
I gave it away, whore for a day
Its so ugly, Im still breathing
But you never got my virgin heart
It stayed locked up, its still beating.
Blue black, maybe you got something
But the flowers grew black
Eat your words, eat your hat
Eat your words, eat your heart out.
I never felt so clean, you did the sin supreme
You never had a clue, you cant take it with you
I never felt so clean, you did the sin supreme
You never had a clue, you cant take it with you.

Did It Happen When I Stopped Complaining?

Somewhere along my journey,
I grew up.
I became both accountable
And took responsibility for my actions.
There were many along the way,
Who could not keep up the pace.
Somehow as I aged...
I held onto my faith,
With a painful self assessment I learned to face.
Saw my flaws and accepted them.
And not an excuse do I make.
It's too late for that now anyway.
That's why I am pleased to be the me I am.
I know the meaning of forgiveness and sacrifice.
And those realities have led me to my growth!
Somewhere along my journey,
I grew up.
I knew I would become a victim of confusion and stress.
I'm even impressed!
When did I wisen up...
To take my life with such seriousness?
Somewhere along my journey,
I grew up.
Did it happen when I stopped complaining?
Did I refuse to change the rules in the middle of the game?
Or did the violation of those rules,
I simply refused to change.
Knowing how to better play the game?
Either way...
Somewhere along my journey,
I grew up.
And pleased to be the me I am.
Still a work in process!

Early Works - Lucky

Black with flecks of white under his chin
across my manuscripts with muddy paws
treads my furry pet
butts my pen with his head
then with amber eyes
looks at me dolefully
as if to say “Did I do something wrong? ”
Again, with head gives my pen another shove
rolls on his back to have his tummy rubbed.

Drippy tap, ears alert
flick with paw makes muddy dirt
will sit in sink all day long
when tap washers gone.
Curls up near fire on cold night
beams a smile, I’m all right.
Darkness does not like
rather chase butterflies in sunlight
never far does he roam
loves his family and his home.

29 June 1978

Author’s Note:
Lucky was our first cat which we had for eleven years. He was all black when we first got him hence his name, and as he grew older little flecks of white grew under his chin.

Growth reverses

He was in advanced age
When he secured her company.
She was in middle age,
To which he grew down,
With passage of days.
Both grew down to teenage
In shameless pursuit of love,
In the form of hide and seek.

Ponder

The tufts of grass grew tall along the wall,
then through the fence, continued on their way,
into a meadow.
There, wild flowers grew,
in vivid colours of every hue,
and were strewn down the hill in disarray,
sparkling bright in the early newborn day,
leaving the mind to ponder on it all.
