When I was about to break a world record and become well known, my mother used to say that for her the important thing was for me to become a doctor - a career which had not been possible in her generation and in her society. Sport was something to be set aside.

The Lost Generation by Jonathan Reed
I am part of a lost generation
and I refuse to believe that
I can change the world
I realize this may be a shock but
“Happiness comes from within.”
is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy.”
So in 30 years I will tell my children
they are not the most important thing in my life
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
work
is more important than
family
I tell you this
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
but this will not be true in my era
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
30 years from now, I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making
In the future
Environmental destruction will be the norm
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this earth
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.
And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it.
Now read it again in reverse.
Which generation do you belong in?

Low Society
A judge a dentist or physician
In this low society
Trade ambition for position
In this low society
Have you heard its in the stars
Next july we collide with mars
Have you heard it in the bars
In this low society
No more pay and lots of leisure
In this low society
Low society
Im just doing what I can
In this low society
But Im an incidental man
In this low society
I give away what others sell
The secrets yours so never tell
cos if you do youll go to hell
Low society
Side by side and always tired
All for one and no-one hired
All thats left is love inspired
Low society
And when the party is complete
And youre still standing on your feet
The taste of victory is sweet
Low society
And darling dont forget
In this low society
To turn off your t.v. set
In this low society
The most important thing at all
In this low society
Is not to stand too tall
In this low society
In this world that never learns
I can see rome as it burns
All the passion and the power
Turns to ash within an hour
No more play and no more pleasure
In this low society

That's maybe the most important thing each generation does, is to break a lot of rules and make up their own way of doing things.

Where woman lacks importance
Delivered and moulded by my mother,
I was identified with my father,
Who, delivered and moulded by mother,
Was identified with his father.
I go with my son; wife is an onlooker.
The son of my daughter I've no claim on.
In each generation, mother is removed
From the memory line of the family.
Let my name carry the name of mother
And of father behind it to the world.
Let me have the names of the grand mothers
And grandfathers on both sides in record.

Blank Generation
I was saying let me out of here before I was even born
Its such a gamble when you get a face
Its fascinatin to observe what the mirror does
But when I dine its for the wall that I set a place
I belong to the blank generation and
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the generation but
I can take it or leave it each time
Triangles were fallin at the window as the doctor cursed
He was a cartoon long forsaken by the public eye
The nurse adjusted her garters as I breathed my first
The doctor grabbed my throat and yelled, gods consolation prize!
I belong to the blank generation
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the generation but
I can take it or leave it each time
To hold the tv to my lips, the air so packed with cash
Then carry it up flights of stairs and drop it in the vacant lot
To lose my train of thought and fall into your arms tracks
And watch beneath the eyelids every passing dot
I belong to the blank generation and
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the generation but
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the blank generation and
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the generation but
I can take it or leave it each time

It wasn't on my agenda, but the thing about getting important awards is it makes the adventure of your career have a little more possibility. I think just what's happened so far is already making the opportunities more interesting, even though I'm at the twilight of my career of like 48 years.

Goin Down Slow
Iv had my fun if I dont ever get well no more
Iv had my fun if I dont ever get well no more
I know my help is failing me now
I know Im goin down slow
Wont somebody wright my mother and tell her the shape Im in
I want somebody to wright my mother and tell her the shape Im in
I want you tell her to pray for me
Ask her to fortgive me for all my sinns
Mother please dont send me no doctor
A doctor cant do me no good
I dont want you to send me no doctor now..
A doctor just cant do me no good
Back when I was a young boy oh..

If bringing up the next generation is important, why aren't they the best qualified, the best paid? Why aren't we as concerned about their career progression as we are about those who work in the education or health services?

(V - 2009) My Mother and This World
If all were
So loving as my mother
This world would be so happier!
If all were
So passionate as my mother
This world would be so greener!
If all were
So compassionate as my mother
This world would be so safer!
If all were
So conscious as my mother
This world would be so healthier!
If all were
So considerate as my mother
This world would be so peaceful!
If all were
So sensitive as my mother
This world would be so painful!
If all were
So cautious as my mother
This world would be so backward!
If all were
So charitable as my mother
This world would be so lazy!
If all were
So forgiving as my mother
This world would be so irresponsible!
If all were
So enduring as my mother
This world would be so cruel!
So I would that
This world be what it would be ever
And
My mother be
My mother for ever.
Doctor To My Disease
Ive been treated for mild depression
And Ive been treated for growing pains.
Ive been treated for hallucinations;
Now I can see it all coming again.
Well, you can wind me up. yeah, you can slow me down.
You can dig a little, and you can mess me around.
But theres one thing I should tell you, to which
You must agree:
Theres no use you playing doctor to my disease.
Said its no use you playing doctor to my disease.
I got no cure for this condition
That youve been causing me tonight.
Well, you put my heart in overdrive:
Hand me the bullet I must bite.
You can stir me up and you can cut me down.
You can probe a little, push that knife around.
But theres one thing I should tell you, to which
You must agree:
Its no use you playing doctor to my disease.
Do you have to break my engine
So you can fix it up again?
Tuned to crazy imperfection
Just to score me out of ten.
Well, you can wind me up. yeah, you can slow me down.
You can dig a little. yeah, you can mess me around.
But theres one thing I should tell you, to which
You must agree:
That its no use you playing doctor to my disease.

The Hand That Feeds
Doctor, doctor, doctor
Please, doctor, doctor, please
Doctor, doctor, doctor
Feel like an old diseace
Get your sweet ass off the floor
Doctor, doctor, doctor
I cant refuse any loose harted lady anymore
I scream your name into the crowd
You feel the flame, but yo aint proud
Mabye your attitude aint right
So all thats left for me to do is bite
The hand that feeds me
Feeds me
Doctor, doctor, doctor
Doctor, doctor, please
All things you put me through
What the hell you want me to
Do all the things that uncle john needs
I aint the dog that bites the hand that feeds me
In the middle of, with a spittle of
Et tu like birds of a feather
When another day, love another way
Push, shove, make love, play
Never never, never ever
Never ever, never ever
Na, na...
Doctor, doctor, doctor
Please do a-what you can
Doctor, doctor, doctor
Would you please give my life a hand
All the things you put me trough
What the hell you want me to
Do all the things that uncle john needs
I aint the dog that bites the hand that feeds me, yeah
Doctor, doctor, doctor
Doctor, doctor, please

Fantasy World
living in this fantasy world
where whatever you thought of
'you could do.'
and all your dreams would follow you.'
if you dreamt of all the riches in the world
you would start off with a pearl.
then the beauties of the diamonds
rubies, sapphires and emeralds
would all follow suit.
silver and gold to boot.
you could go into any career that you want
whether it was a doctor, lawyer, scientist
or even a gymnast you could do.
it all depended upon you.
there are so many options in this fantasy world
to do, or become whatever your heart would desire.
but! it still would not put out the fire.
most all of these are material things
but love 'it could not bring'.
it could not give you what was
truely in your heart and soul.
and that was 'someone for you to hold.'
the heart and soul is together like a mother
and a child
and they'll be together for a very long while.
treat them gently, treat them with care
then all your wonders, they will share.
they'll show you all the emotions
that come in this life
from heartaches to struggles and strife.
the most important feelings that
the heart and soul will show
is the love that will flourish and grow.
this you will not find in your fantasy world
for love is much richer
than your diamonds and pearls.
love grows from deep within your heart and soul
the most glorious wonder to behold.
so step out of that fantasy world and
come into the light
that will take you on the most fantastic flight.
you will see what all others have discovered
that for you, there is a lover.
