In more recent years, I've become more and more fascinated with the indigenous folklore of this land, Native American folklore, and also Hispanic folklore now that I live in the Southwest.

When I was younger, I was in love with everything about the British Isles, from British folklore to Celtic music. That was always where my passions were as a young girl, and so I studied folklore as a college student in England and Ireland.

To us, basing stories on christianity is the same as basing stories on Roman mythology, Native American folklore, or unsubstantiated government conspiracies.

The class has become over the years fairly large, running to three hundred or more, but I always insist upon reading all the student folklore collections myself. Although this is a tall order, I look forward to it because I learn so much from it.

Read the folklore masters. Go to galleries. Walk in the woods. That's what you need to be an artist or storyteller.

I have a better internal and intuitive understanding of folklore and myth than science and technology, so in that way fantasy is easier.

One of the best things about folklore and fairy tales is that the best fantasy is what you find right around the corner, in this world. That's where the old stuff came from.

"Management" means, in the last analysis, the substitution of thought for brawn and muscle, of knowledge for folklore and superstition, and of cooperation for force. . .

Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shore, the scar of our racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society. From the sixteenth century forward, blood flowed in battles over racial supremacy. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or feel remorse for this shameful episode. Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it. Our children are still taught to respect the violence which reduced a red-skinned people of an earlier culture into a few fragmented groups herded into impoverished reservations.

They do not merely collect texts; they must also gather data about the context and the informant and, above all, write an analysis of the items based upon the course readings and lecture material on folklore theory and method.

Folklore in Maytime
Fairies elves and pixies
heed our little song;
o'er hill and dale
we search for you
through the grasses long,
looking for blithe spirits
fairy kings and queens
in a land of make believe
wishing wells and streams...
recapturing pretty roses
around the fairy ring.
'Folklore in Maytime'
this is the song we sing.

Merman By The Sea
There is a man by the Sea,
who is hidden away from me.
He has a scaly tail
for he is a merman who is pale,
pale and sad for what a life
He could have had,
had he met me by the Sea.
Now I must move on
to another shore,
and forget the part
of this misguided folklore.
