A young sailor boy came to see me today. It pleases me to have these lads seek me on their return from their first voyage, and tell me how much they have learned about navigation.

Name Sakes

BUT where's the brown drifter that went out alone ?
-Roll and go, and fare you well-
' Was her name
Peggy Nutten?
' That name is my own.
Fare you well, my sailor.
They sang in the dark, ' Let her go ! Let her go ! '
And she sailed to the West, where the broad waters flow;
And the others come back, but . . . the bitter winds blow.
Ah, fare you well, my sailor.

The women, at evening, they wave and they cheer.
-Roll and go, and fare you well-
They're waiting to welcome their lads at the pier.
Fare you well, my sailor.
They're all coming home in the twilight below;
But there's one little boat. . . . Let her go ! Let her go!
She carried my heart, and a heart for the foe.
Ah, fare you well, my sailor.

The
Nell
and the
Maggie
, the
Ruth
and the Joan,

-'-Roll and go, and fare you well-
They come to their name-sakes, and leave me alone.
Fare you well, my sailor.
And names are kep' dark, for the spies mustn't know;
But they'll look in my face, an' I think it will show;
Peggy Nutten's my name. Let her go ! Let her go!
Ah, fare you well, my sailor.

The Lads in Their Hundreds

The lads in their hundreds to Ludlow come in for the fair,
There's men from the barn and the forge and the mill and the fold,
The lads for the girls and the lads for the liquor are there,
And there with the rest are the lads that will never be old.

There's chaps from the town and the field and the till and the cart,
And many to count are the stalwart, and many the brave,
And many the handsome of face and the handsome of heart,
And few that will carry their looks or their truth to the grave.

I wish one could know them, I wish there were tokens to tell
The fortunate fellows that now you can never discern;
And then one could talk with them friendly and wish them farewell
And watch them depart on the way that they will not return.

But now you may stare as you like and there's nothing to scan;
And brushing your elbow unguessed-at and not to be told
They carry back bright to the coiner the mintage of man,
The lads that will die in their glory and never be old.

What I Learned Today

What I learned today is that there will be a tomorrow,
what I learned today is the truth is full of pain and sorrow.

What I learned yesterday is people make mistakes,
what I learned yesterday is I will do whatever it takes.

What I learned Saturday when i watched you leave I take back
what I said, what I learned Saturday is when we fought i dread.

What I learned now is that part of my heart is gone,
what I learned now is you will no longer wake me up at dawn.

It is quiet with out you,
I feel I have many things to do.

The Voyage

We all are on a voyage,
a voyage to the stars.
None of us will get there
in big old fancy cars.
Some of us will get there
long before some others.
But it doesn't matter
for we're sisters and brothers.
This voyage must be taken
on a solo flight.
It will only happen
when you see the light,
the light that shines so brightly
right before your eyes.
The star that you will go to
will make you realize
that earth is just a temporary place
we come to visit.
It feels like home for a while
and maybe you will miss it.
But when you reach that star
that you're headed for
all your memories will return
like walking through a door.

The stars are out there twinkling
all through the night,
twinkling out a message
to all that see its light,
saying'I'm waiting for your voyage.
Come back home to me.
I'm the star you've reached for
throughout eternity.'

The path of pleasure

To punish pleases us
And to pardon does as well.
To revenge pleases us
And to pity does as well.
To pride pleases us
And to be humble does as well.
If getting pleased is the goal
The wise will chose the second.

Expatriated! With a Wish to Ease Into This Leisurely

Expatriated!
From continued thoughts of conflicting loyalties.
Feeling a need to escape from trivia.
And unchanged steadfast philosophies.
Fixed in frozen mindsets.
To fizzle correctness and burn sensibiliities.
Paraded by those who refuse to 'see' reality!
Or make attempts to move in that direction.

There is a growing need within me to release,
From nonstop debates that take place to feed...
On those who sacrifice to push forward from devisiveness.
With a discipline to keep my vision on that which pleases me!
A life to live...
Acknowledging my happiness.
With a wish to ease into it leisurely.

I believe in a deserved peace one recognizes and keeps.
Free from turmoil that brews,
As if this is what one should harvest...
With expectations for gloom to reap.

My deeds planted were for joy to bloom.
Not to excite to see weeds grow!
Nor to give them room in my mind to breed.
No!

I've learned to discriminate,
Between self inflicted ignorance...
And participating in repeated stupidity.
Lessons at first learned with difficulty.
But learned I did!
With an acceptance of isolating maturity.

A life to live acknowledging my happiness.
With a wish to ease into it leisurely...
Is as basic as I desire to get.
With no convincing what it is that pleases me.

Expatriated!
With a wish to ease into this leisurely.
That's it.
Requiring no BA, MA, BS or PhD degree!
This is the peace I seek for me.
And free of declaration...
Of who it is I 'should' or 'should not' be.

I Have Learned

I had been told 'never' to say never.
And for as long as I lived,
I will learn a 'never' said will return.

And I found that to be true.
I have learned to focus and remain conscious.
Never to keep repeating the same mistakes.

I have learned,
The giving of oneself...
Opens the door to heartache.

I have learned,
Forgiveness for some...
Means a forgetting for them to what they've done.

I have learned,
A revolving door...
Revolves not solve solutions.

I have learned,
A no does not mean yes...
To a depleting of my happiness.

I have learned,
Never to allow my peace of mind...
To be plucked by anyone wishing to get on my nerves.

I have learned,
THAT!
And 'that' aint gon' happen no mo'!
Never.

RETURN TO WONDERLAND...by Talile Ali

RETURN TO WONDERLAND
RETURN TO WONDERLAND
I SHOULD HAVE CHANGED MY PLANS
RETURN TO WONDERLAND

I MET A YOUNG GIRL
AS CUTE AS SHE COULD BE
BRIGHTER THAN A BUTTON
GOT THE BEST OF ME

MAMA WAS A HOE THOUGH
MESSED AROUND A LOT
NEVER KNEW HER REAL DAD
SEX IS ALL SHE GOT

HER MOM LIKED HER PLAYIN'
BABY LEARNED REALLY WELL
BETTER TO DO SOMEONE
THAN LIVE IN THIS HELL

SHE SWORE THAT SHE'D NEVER
SUBMIT HER KIDS TO THIS
SO A BOY FROM THE SUBURBS
GOT TO GRANT THAT WISH

DOESN'T MATTER IF HE LOVED HER
JUST AN ORNAMENT
BOTH WANTED THEIR ITEMS
BEFORE THEIR LIVES WERE SPENT

SO SHE'S OUT GIVEN HEAD NOW
TO ANYONE WHO WILL
SAY A NICE WORD TO HER
SO THEY CAN COP A FEEL

HER BABE'S ARE YOUNG GIRLS NOW
THEY'RE OUT DOIN WHO KNOWS WHO
IF IT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR MOM THEN
THESE BOY'S WILL HAVE TO DO

I CAN'T SAY THAT I'M HAPPY
THE WAY THAT THINGS TURNED OUT
MY FRIEND IS TRAPPED IN THIS HELL
SEEMS THAT THERE'S NO WAY OUT

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE WHORING
OR SEX TO MAKE A SCORE
IT'S ALL ABOUT EXISTING
LIVING THIS LIFE ON THESE SHORES

SO AS THIS ENDS SO SOFTLY
I HOPE IT HELPS A FEW
TO UNDERSTAND SOME REASONS
WOMEN DO THE THINGS THEY DO

SOMETIMES THERE'S A STORY
WHY SOME WOMEN ARE SO KEEN
ON BEING DRAWN TO SLEAZY
AND TREATED OBSCENE BY MEN

RETURN TO WONDERLAND
RETURN TO WONDERLAND
TIME FOR A CHANGE OF PLANS
RETURN TO WONDERLAND

Sail On Sailor

I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean
Through restful waters and deep commotion
Often frightened, unenlightened
Sail on, sail on sailor
I wrest the waters, fight neptunes waters
Sail through the sorrows of lifes marauders
Unrepenting, often empty
Sail on, sail on sailor
Caught like a sewer rat alone but I sail
Bought like a crust of bread, but oh do I wail
Seldom stumble, never crumble
Try to tumble, lifes a rumble
Feel the stinging Ive been given
Never ending, unrelenting
Heartbreak searing, always fearing
Never caring, persevering
Sail on, sail on, sailor
I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways
Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters
Uninspired, drenched and tired
Wail on, wail on, sailor
Always needing, even bleeding
Never feeding all my feelings
Damn the thunder, must I blunder
Theres no wonder all Im under
Stop the crying and the lying
And the sighing and my dying
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor

Young Munro the Sailor

'Twas on a sunny morning in the month of May,
I met a pretty damsel on the banks o' the Tay;
I said, My charming fair one, come tell to me I pray,
Why do you walk alone on the banks o' the Tay.

She said, Kind sir, pity me, for I am in great woe
About my young sailor lad, whose name is James Munro;
It's he has been long at sea, seven years from this day,
And I come here sometimes to weep for him that's far, far away.

Lovely creature, cease your weeping and consent to marry me,
And my houses and all my land I will give to thee,
And we shall get married without any delay,
And live happy and contented on the banks o' the Tay.

Believe me, my sweet lady, I pity the sailor's wife,
For I think she must lead a very unhappy life;
Especially on a stormy night, I'm sure she cannot sleep,
Thinking about her husband whilst on the briny deep.

Oh, sir! it is true, what you to me have said,
But I must be content with the choice I've made;
For Munro's he's young and handsome, I will ne'er deny,
And if I don't get him for a husband, believe me, I will die.

Because, when last we parted, we swore to be true,
And I will keep my troth, which lovers ought to do;
And I will pray for his safe return by night and by day,
That God may send him safe home to the banks o' the Tay.

Forgive me, noble heart, for asking to marry you,
I was only trying your love, if it was really true;
But I've found your love is pure towards your sailor lad,
And the thought thereof, believe me, makes my heart feel glad.

As homeward we retraced our steps her heart seemed glad,
In hopes of seeing again her brave sailor lad,
He had promised to marry her when he would return,
So I bade her keep up her spirits and no longer mourn.

Dear creature, the lass that's true to her sweetheart deserves great praise,
And I hope young Munro and you will spend many happy days,
For unto him I know you will ever prove true,
And perchance when he comes home he will marry you.

What you have said, kind sir, I hope will come true,
And if it does, I'll make it known to you;
And you must come to the marriage, which you musn't gainsay,
And dance and rejoice with us on the marriage-day.

When we arrived in Dundee she bade me good-bye,
Then I told her where I lived, while she said with a sigh,
Kind sir, I will long remember that morning in May,
When I met you by chance on the banks o' the Tay.

When three months were past her sailor lad came home,
And she called to see me herself alone,
And she invited me to her marriage without delay,
Which was celebrated with great pomp the next day.

So I went to the marriage with my heart full of joy,
And I wished her prosperity with her sailor boy;
And I danced and sang till daylight, and then came away,
Leaving them happy and contented on the banks o' the Tay.

So all ye pretty fair maids, of high or low degree,
Be faithful to your sweethearts when they have gone to sea,
And never be in doubts of them when they are far away,
Because they might return and marry you some unexpected day.

How’s My Boy?

“HO, Sailor of the sea!
How’s my boy—my boy?”
“What’s your boy’s name, good wife,
And in what good ship sail'd he?”
“My boy John— He that went to sea—
What care I for the ship, sailor?
My boy's my boy to me.
“You come back from sea,
And not know my John?
I might as well have ask’d some landsman
Yonder down in the town.
There ’s not an ass in all the parish
But he knows my John.

“How’s my boy—my boy?
And unless you let me know
I’ll swear you are no sailor,
Blue jacket or no,
Brass buttons or no, sailor,
Anchor and crown or no!
Sure his ship was the ‘Jolly Briton’”—
“Speak low, woman, speak low!”
“And why should I speak low, sailor,
About my own boy John?
If I was loud as I am proud
I’d sing him over the town!
Why should I speak low, sailor?”
“That good ship went down.”

“How’s my boy—my boy?
What care I for the ship, sailor?
I was never aboard her.
Be she afloat or be she aground,
Sinking or swimming, I’ll be bound,
Her owners can afford her!
I say, how’s my John?”
“Every man on board went down,
Every man aboard her.”
“How’s my boy—my boy?
What care I for the men, sailor?
I’m not their mother—
How’s my boy—my boy?
Tell me of him and no other!
How ’s my boy—my boy?”

We Who....

we who would seek a home,
find our home with the homeless.
we who seek truth,
know the tree to be a tree!
we who seek liberty,
throw all that we own onto the fire.
we who seek love,
feed the hungry.
we who seek companionship,
simply become dialogue...
we who would seek god,
well, all of the above.
we who seek tomorrow,
give today to a stranger...
and wrap his feet up
with our dreams!

I Am Shaky Today

I AM SHAKY TODAY

I am shaky today-
Why I am not sure
But after all I have been through
And after all I have done
And all I have learned
And all the many times I have gotten through shakiness in the past
I am shaky today
As if all my life and its lessons have been for nothing
And I cannot control a simple mood-
I am shaky today
Like the earth might open up and swallow me forever -
I am shaky –Shaky-
After all these years
I have learned nothing-
I am so so ashamed-
Shaky still now while writing this poem.

Oh Sailor

I'm undecided about you again
I can be right that you're not here
It's double sided 'cause I ruined it all
But also saved myself
by never believing you dear
Everything good I deem too good to be true
Everything else is just a bore
Everything I have to look forward to
Has a pretty painful and very imposing before
Oh sailor why'd you do it
What'd you do that for
Saying there's nothing to it
Then lettin' it go by the boards*
Oh sailor why'd you do it
What'd you do that for
Saying there's nothing to it
Then lettin' it go by the boards
I have too been playing with fifty-two cards
Just 'cause I play so far from my vest
Whatever I've got, I've got no reason to guard
What could I do but spend my best
Oh sailor why'd you do it
What'd you do that for
Saying there's nothing to it
Then lettin' it go by the boards
Oh sailor why'd you do it
What'd you do that for
Saying there's nothing to it
Then lettin' it go by the boards
And after waiting, fighting patiently on my knees
All the other stuff tired itself out first, not me
And in it's way your pierce of touch** and call of the different breed
One of the steps is getting me wired and got me there and then got me
And what a thing to know what could be instead
Oh what a blessed curse to see
Took the agenda from the place in my bed
Made a merry paramour of me
Oh sailor why'd you do it
What'd you do that for
Saying there's nothing to it
Then lettin' it go by the boards
Oh sailor why'd you do it
What'd you do that for
Saying there's nothing to it
Then lettin' it go by the boards

Song Of The Mermaid

On a day of days
I stood and gazed
Over the western sea
I was completely dazed,
Wide-mouthed and amazed
When a mermaid called to me
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy
Like a man in a dream,
For an age it seemed
I stood as still as a stone
While the mermaid sang
And her melody rang
Like a memory calling me home
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy
Then the sea and the wind
And the shores did spin
And though my resistance was strong
All the stars in space
Filled the mermaids face
As she captured my will with her song
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy
Somehow I spoke --
The enchantment broke
I rubbed my eyes open wide
Like a dream she was gone
All that remained was a song
Borne on the ebbing tide
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy
Ooh-ooooh ooooooooooh, my sunny sailor boy

The Haymakers’ Song

HERE’S to him that grows it,
Drink, lads, drink!
That lays it in and mows it,
Clink, jugs, clink!
To him that mows and makes it,
That scatters it and shakes it,
That turns, and teds, and rakes it,
Clink, jugs, clink!

Now here ’s to him that stacks it,
Drink, lads, drink!
That thrashes and that tacks it,
Clink, jugs, clink!
That cuts it out for eating,
When March-dropp’d lambs are bleating,
And the slate-blue clouds are sleeting,
Drink, lads, drink!

And here ’s to thane and yeoman,
Drink, lads, drink!
To horseman and to bowman,
Clink, jugs, clink!
To lofty and to low man,
Who bears a grudge to no man,
But flinches from no foeman,
Drink, lads, drink!
