I had been writing for about twelve years. I knew pretty well how you could find things out, but I had never been trained in an academic way how to go about the research.

I was pretty dead set against ever writing an academic novel. It's always been my view that there are already more than enough academic novels and that most of them aren't any good. Most of them are self-conscious and bitter, the work of people who want to settle grudges.

One book at a time... though I'm usually doing the research for others while I'm writing, but that sort of research is fairly desultory and I like to stick to the book being written - and writing a book concentrates the mind so the research is more productive.

An Unresolved New Year
At the hour of twelve on New Years Eve
When the old year turns into the new
Thoughts turn to what the future holds
And what goals we should pursue.
At the hour of nine on New Years Day
Or some time thereabouts
We wake with great reluctance and
Those resolutions start to doubt.
At the hour of ten on New Years Day
When we start to feel our age
By then we've written lists of things
That will benefit through change.
At the hour of twelve on New Years Day
When things start getting clear
We find we've hid that list away
To return to in one year.

Time spent researching varies from book to book. Some novels require months, even years of research, others very little. I try to do most of my research before I begin but inevitably questions emerge during the writing.

Little Girl in the Window
There's a little girl in a window looking sweetly at you
She know you and admires you
Yet you don't even know her name
She quietly sits by you in class and wtaches you in the halls
Never talking, just writing
She loves you, don't you know?
But you can't even see it,
You don't see her.
The girl is loosing hope in all she knew
For school is almost over and you'll be gone forever
She knows that she's not pretty enough,
That she's too quiet
Yet she still loves to watch you from her window,
Always having to look in, never wanted
Now it's 2049,30 years have passed
You casually talk to your friends again at your reunion
A girl you once knew tells about the girl in the window
She committed suicide...
As you finally see this little girl, read her things
You realize who she truly was
You finally see the little girl in the window.
Except she is still 14
And you 48
You see that was was pretty and amazing
Yet you neer knew
With the truth known,
You look once more at this girl
And offer her a silent prayer
Saying the final goodbye to the little girl in the window

Milvian
I am not writing this poem for you,
But for people who are ready to learn;
Because you still dwell where Satan is,
And i want to find a way to teach you for the better.
The Seventh Day for the sabbath and,
Of your many letter being read at times;
But how are you feeling over there Milvian?
The future is like the evidence of things unseen,
And hope is the answer to your research;
But i am fresh out of space with my imaginations!
And i am not writing this poem for you.

Thank You For Writing A Poem For Me
i am your fan
many years and more years to come
i shall remain
your avid fan
thank you for writing me a poem
about love
and sleepless nights
thank you for writing about the ward
the man bound in
straitjacket
that glass of water that has to be taken everyday
to slide the pills smoothly
in your throat
thank you for writing about the children
who shall still find their mothers
their homes
thank you for bearing with us all these years
when we ourselves
have nothing to write anymore
thank you for being there
always and forever.

Sometimes things in life take a few years to digest, and they find their way into the work later on. Sometimes I'm writing about things from eight years ago-they just took a long time to distill and come out in the appropriate way.
Academic success depends on research and publications.

Habits are comforts
To listen to the tunes that
Your ears are trained on,
To look at things that
Your eyes are trained on,
And to tread the way that
Your feet are trained in
Will appear sweet to you.
Habits bring comfort zones.

Pretty Boy
I lie awake at night
See things in black and white
I've only got you inside my mind
You know you have made me blind
I lie awake and pray
That you will look my way
I have all this longing in my heart
I knew it right from the start
Oh my pretty pretty boy I love you
Like I never ever loved no one before you
Pretty pretty boy of mine
Just tell me you love me too
Oh my pretty pretty boy
I need you
Oh my pretty pretty boy I do
Let me inside
Make me stay right beside you
I used to write your name
And put it in a frame
And sometime I think I hear you call
Right from my bedroom wall
You stay a little while
And touch me with your smile
And what can I say to make you mine
To reach out for you in time
Oh my pretty pretty boy I love you
Like I never ever loved no one before you
Pretty pretty boy of mine
Just tell me you love me too
Oh my pretty pretty boy
I need you
Oh my pretty pretty boy I do
Let me inside
Make me stay right beside you
[BRIDGE]
Oh pretty boy
Say you love me too
Oh my pretty pretty boy I love you
Like I never ever loved no one before you
Pretty pretty boy of mine
Just tell me you love me too
Oh my pretty pretty boy
I need you
Oh my pretty pretty boy I do
Let me inside
Make me stay right beside you

Find Myself
By eric clapton
We took the long way home, you held my hand,
The days so full of all the things we had planned.
We walked beyond the green, beyond the day.
We shared a dream that I let slip away.
I had to find myself.
I had to find myself.
No use looking for no one else,
cause Ill be lonely till I find myself.
You were the man who knew too much to say.
So many things that I learned came your way.
These things I know that I cant forget,
Deep in my heart, theyre a part of me yet.
They helped me find myself.
They helped me find myself.
No use looking for no one else,
cause Ill be lonely till I find myself.
Too many years rolled by without a word.
I tried to hide behind things that Id heard.
And now the truth is clear for all to see
That through it all, it was you believed in me.
You helped me find myself.
I had to find myself.
No use looking for no one else,
cause Ill be lonely till I find myself.
I got to find myself.
I got to find myself.
No use looking for no one else,
cause Ill be lonely till I find myself.

It has taken me years of struggle, hard work and research to learn to make one simple gesture, and I know enough about the art of writing to realize that it would take as many years of concentrated effort to write one simple, beautiful sentence.

I cannot say how strongly I object to people using other people's writing as research. Research is non-fiction, especially for horror, fantasy, science fiction. Do not take your research from other people's fiction. Just don't.

By that time I was hooked on a career in academic research instead of one in the pharmaceutical industry that I had originally considered in deciding to get a PhD.
Some furious fools went to school
only to learn how to re invent the stool
to stumble and hang their wisdom long beards
around the shot bang academic years
too bad they became endemic academics
too bad they proclaim academic pandemics
some only for the nerds
some only for the kicks
some only for the herds
infective clicks

I have to do more close research and fact checking for the science fiction. This is not however to say that writing good fantasy does not involve doing good research.

Identity Of Moment
At twelve of night philosopher thinks with a cup of tea
At twelve of night exuded in dream
At twelve of night cloud of blue sky burns
At twelve of night strip by strip waves fall to ground
At twelve of night full moon flashes of light
At twelve of night horn of car strikes on door
At twelve of night couple enters into dwell of love
At twelve of night loud cry of progenitors comes
At twelve of night machinegun of devilish roars
At twelve of night whistles of train strikes
At twelve of night the red sun of monument raises.

I don't accept the argument of people like David Horowitz that the government should impose some sort of predetermined political balance on academic research.
I knew this man
i knew this man some years ago
dearly beloved by four and two
back to fro his love went too
five of five he was and served
so to him a reward well deserved
I knew this man some years ago
worked the woods and suffered stings
lo among the rich he lives and pings
to whom benevolence was a reflex
and nothing came along was complex
i knew this man some years ago
who in zodiac learns a fable
and in unity became so able
over the Niger citadel he grew a lion
then he joined this army in Zion
i knew this man some years ago
he fell in love and changed his mind
now he hard sought someone to find
stood a lie to cute fairy tale damsel
how he christened her his own damisel
i knew this man some years ago
has broad shoulders and bulging chest
his time and strength he did well invest
i knew this man who loved himself
i knew this man in none but myself
