Back then, the excise tax was designed to be a luxury tax for people who owned telephones.

Bloody Luxury
(coverdale)
Now when I first met you
I was rolling along,
Just a bar room crooner
Singing heartbreak songs,
An I supposed I could never get next to you
But, you seemed quite happy with my company
You kept my body heat steady at 103,
With your mouth full of gimme
An your body full of much obliged
Its bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
Bloody luxury
What you do to me
Its bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
cos no matter what you do to me
Its bloody luxury
Bloody luxury...
Youre a five star woman,
An you know what to give
To fill a part time loser
Full of reasons to live,
But, theres no doubt about it
Im taking a chance on you
Becos you get my heart beating heavy,
Make my knees go weak
You get me so damn nervous
I can hardly speak,
But, nothings gonna stop me
Hanging on my good luck charm
Its bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
Bloody luxury
What you do to me
Its bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
cos no matter what you do to me
Its bloody luxury
Bloody luxury...
Its bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
Bloody luxury
Honey what you do to me
Its bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
cos no matter what you do to me
Its bloody luxury
Bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
Bloody luxury
Honey what you do to me
Its bloody luxury
What you mean to me,
cos no matter what you do to me,
No matter what you do to me,
No matter what you do to me,
Its bloody luxury
Bloody luxury
Bloody luxury...

Telephones are a virtual necessity - not a luxury - and the revenues collected by this tax flow into the general fund. But this once temporary tax remains and costs American taxpayers, our small businesses and families almost $6 billion dollars a year.

Dipping Low
I went around the world till I found the right spot.
It was ultra sweet and just a little bit hot.
Dippin' low in the lap of luxury.
Dippin' low in the lap of luxury.
Now if you get down there you'll be doin' it right.
Yeah, once you got it you better hold on tight.
Dippin' low in the lap of luxury.
Dippin' low in the lap of luxury.
Now if you wanna break down I'll hold my head up high.
I'm a good mechanic, I'll go over you in style.
Dippin low in the lap of luxury.
Dippin low in the lap of luxury.

THOSE People Are Back Here...Again
Here they come again!
'Close the blinds.
Turn off the lights.
Unplug the telephones.
DO NOT...
Make a sound,
If they should knock on the door.'
*Mommy.
Daddy.
You're scaring me!
What's going on? *
'THOSE people are back here...again.'
*What people?
What people?
You're frightening me! *
'Those people coming through this neighborhood,
Singing songs of peace and expressing love.*
*NO daddy NO!
Say it isn't true.*
'Ssssshhh. Sssssshhh.
It will be okay.
I've got my magnum loaded.
And your mother is packing a 45.
We will be fine.
Don't worry.'

Busy Lives
When someone says 'do telephone', she telephones
When someone says 'please write', she always writes
When someone says 'pop by', she excitedly replies
that she will, and what is more, she always does.
But the world is perverse in its behaviour
and most people find her eagerness quite strange.
When she telephones or writes or dares to visit;
they're most put out or dare I say, enraged!
She ponders on her life and their behaviour
she feels so very lonely and so sad.
She popped in yesterday to see a neighbour.
They said, in callous tones, 'go get a life'.
They chat amongst themselves and they condemn her.
They say, 'Well you know her, she's not quite right',
but in their hearts, they know, of course, they've failed her,
their excuse is that they lead such busy lives.

A Real Motorcycle
Unspeakable. The word that fills up the
poem, that the head
tries to excise.
At 6 a.m., the wet lion. Its sewn plush face
on the porch rail in the rain.
Heavy rains later, & maybe a thunderstorm.
12 or 13 degrees.
Inside: an iris, candle, poster of the
many-breasted Artemis in a stone hat
from Anatolia
A little pedal steel guitar
A photograph of her at a table by the sea,
her shoulder blocked by the red geranium.
The sea tho invisible can be smelled by the casual watcher
Incredible salt air
in my throat when I see her.
'Suddenly you discover that you'll spend your entire life
in disorder; it's all that you have; you must learn to live
with it.'
2
Four tanks, & the human white-shirted body
stopped on June 5 in Place Tian an Men.
Or 'a red pullover K-Way.' There is not much time left
to say these things. The urgency of that,
desire that dogged the body all winter
& has scarcely left,
now awaits the lilacs, their small white bunches.
Gaily.
As if their posies will light up
the curious old intentional bruise.
Adjective, adjective, adjective, noun!
3
Or just, lilac moon.
What we must, & cannot, excise from the head.
Her hand holding, oh, The New Path to the Waterfall?
Or the time I walked in too quickly, looked up
at her shirtless, grinning.
Pulling her down into the front of me, silly!
Sitting down sudden to make a lap for her...
Kissing the back of her leg.
4
Actually the leg kiss was a dream, later enacted
we laughed at it,
why didn't you do it
she said
when you thought of it.
The excisable thought, later
desired or
necessary.
Or shuddered at, in memory.
Later, it is repeated for the cameras
with such unease.
& now, stuck in the head.
Like running the motorcycle full-tilt into the hay bales.
What is the motorcycle doing in the poem
A. said.
It's an image, E. said back.
It's a crash in the head, she said.
It's a real motorcycle.
Afterthought 1
0 excise this: her back turned,
she concentrates on something
in a kitchen sink,
& I sit behind her,
running my fingers on
the table edge.
0 excise this.
Afterthought 2
& after, excise, excise.
If the source of the pain could be located
using geological survey equipment.
Into the sedimentary layers, the slippage,
the surge of the igneous intrusion.
Or the flat bottom of the former sea
I grew up on,
Running the motorcycle into the round
bay bales.
Hay grass poking the skin.
The back wet.
Hey, I shouted,
Her back turned to me, its location
now visible only in the head.
When I can't stand it,
I invent anything, even memories.
She gets up, hair stuck with hay.
I invented this. Yeow.

Lap Of Luxury
The money wont last forever ---
Rent man called twice today.
I hope some day youll find me
In the lap of luxury.
Searched for a new apartment
But they dont grow on trees.
Just want to lay my head
In the lap of luxury.
Stepped out on a new horizon ---
Felt a new spring in my feet.
Found a job, it could set me up
Dangling in the lap of luxury.
And the gaffer is a man of substance ---
Drives a jag and takes high tea.
Lives beyond the industrial wasteland,
Laughing in the lap of luxury.
I need money, now, to soothe my heart!
Buy me a datsun or toyota ---
Get the tax man to agree
All expenses I can muster
From the lap of luxury.

Sun Of Luxor!
THY GREATNESS HAS INSPIRED MEN!
THY MIGHT IS EVIDENT IN THY WEALTH!
THY LUXURIANT WAYS SPEAK FOR THEE IN MANY NATIONS!
THY RICHESS ARE GOTTEN OF THY INTELLIGENCE!
THY WAYS HAS SHOWN MEN THE WAY TO LUXURY!
LUXOR! OH LUXOR! !
TAKE ME WITH YOU ON THY MANY JOURNEYS INTO AGES OF LUXURY!
LET ME NOT BE LEFT BEHIND IN SQUALOR! OH LUXOR! !
LET THY LUXURY BE MADE MANIFEST IN ME AS WELL!
THAT I MAY BE KNOWN AS THOU ART KNOWN OH LUXOR!
AS RAR! LUXOR AMONGST MEN!

The Luxury to apprehend
815
The Luxury to apprehend
The Luxury 'twould be
To look at Thee a single time
An Epicure of Me
In whatsoever Presence makes
Till for a further Food
I scarcely recollect to starve
So first am I supplied—
The Luxury to meditate
The Luxury it was
To banguet on thy Countenance
A Sumptuousness bestows
On plainer Days, whose Table far
As Certainty can see
Is laden with a single Crumb
The Consciousness of Thee.

The Luxury Of Silence...
in the luxury of our silence
we still refuse to spend a word
for that is the irony of
luxury of the rich
when they have more in words
they keep them well
always having second thoughts
releasing them into air
or woods
or into the comforting numbness of
the listening ears
of the mob
or the
other people
which
Sartre had long defined
as hell....

Dear Linda
you tell me
you speak a little spanish
and live in a mansion
owned by your grandmother
somewhere in
a coastal place
complete with maids
and butlers and
private drivers
in luxury i see you
and you tell me
you like my poems...
tell me what to do next
shall i write more poems
or shall i come to your place?

False
Something has changed and I dont know what to say.
I used to stand here alone and in my mind say...
The people whore calling you soon turn away
They could hate you tomorrow and love you today..
Because theyre false
People can be so false sometimes
When they hold my hands
People can be so false sometimes
Something is standing in my way and I cant see
Its clouding up my vision it intimidates me
I didnt want to come here in the first place
You all designed it you all designed it
Because theyre false
People can be so false sometimes
When they hold my hands
People can be so false sometimes
I didnt want it
I didnt want to come here...
In the first place
I didnt want it
I didnt want to come here...
In the first place

You cannot spend money in luxury without doing good to the poor. Nay, you do more good to them by spending it in luxury, than by giving it; for by spending it in luxury, you make them exert industry, whereas by giving it, you keep them idle.

Buddha at the Bodhi tree (Sri Lanka)
Here, to the oldest living tree
Pilgrims have flown, sailed, crawled and bussed
To feel its shade to know its strength
The world’s not owned but held in trust
It never withers, fresh shoots grow
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Does not apply to such a tree
The world’s not owned but held in trust
Buddha, in this tree’s motherland
Had conquered self and fear and lust
Now every seed the message gives
The world’s not owned but held in trust
Treasures you covet, things possessed
Silver and gold all turn to rust
Others will claim your home, your land
The world’s not owned but held in trust
Your little self’s a puff of smoke
To every living thing be just
Power brings responsibilities
The world’s not owned but held in trust
The fluttering leaves eternal tell
Man’s not immortal, die we must
Live a full life but live it well
The world’s not owned, but held in trust

His Perfect Art
Glimpse the beauty of a butterfly's wings,
As if inspired by heavenly angelic paintings,
Soft as delicate silk, they are thus displayed,
Dusted with subtle colours, which can only fade
Once life on this earth is at a sombre end.
One thing in this great world we cannot mend,
When heaven reclaims what it owned, from the start,
These wings designed by God. His perfect art.
