This kind of painting with its large frames is a bourgeois drawing-room art. It is an art dealer's art-and that came in after the civil wars following the French Revolution.

The Bourgeois Blues
(Huddie LedbetterAlan Lomax)
(G7) - (C7) - (G) - (D7)
(G7) Me and my wife went all over town
And everywhere we went people turned us down
Lord, in a (C7) bourgeois town
It's a (G) bourgeois town
I got the (D7) bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all a- (G) round
Home of the brave, land of the free
I don't wanna be mistreated by no bourgeoisie
Lord, in a bourgeois town
Uhm, the bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
Well, me and my wife we were standing upstairs
We heard the white man say ?I don't want no niggers up there?
Lord, in a bourgeois town
Uhm, bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
Well, them white folks in Washington they know how
To call a colored man a nigger just to see him bow
Lord, it's a bourgeois town
Uhm, the bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around
I tell all the colored folks to listen to me
Don't try to find you no home in Washington, DC
?Cause it's a bourgeois town
Uhm, the bourgeois town
I got the bourgeois blues
Gonna spread the news all around

But when I worked on a painting I would do it from a drawing but I would put certain things I was fairly sure I wanted in the painting, and then collage on the painting with printed dots or painted paper or something before I really committed it.

I have often said that just as the French revolution, for instance, understood itself through antiquity, I think our time can be understood through the French revolution. It is quite a natural process to use other times to understand your own time.

I kind of do the drawing with the painting in mind, but it's very hard to guess at a size or a color and all the colors around it and what it will really look like.

All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers ... Each one owes infinitely more to the human race than to the particular country in which he was born.

Surrealism is a bourgeois disaffection; that its militants thought it universal is only one of the signs that it is typically bourgeois.

On occasion I have drawn as a release from painting. The economy in using paper, pencil, charcoal and crayon can help towards a greater gamble and higher rewards. I also find that drawing can generate ideas more rapidly than painting.

I felt the need to get back to painting and I thought the best way was to start drawing, so I enrolled in a life drawing class. I soon discovered that people made very interesting subjects and I am still surprised that I had never discovered it before.

Dealer
If you fool around
With the dealer
Remember soon
Youll have to pay
Hell creep behind you
Like a hunter
Just to steal your soul away
I dont want no one
Messing with my woman
But just the same
I dont see nobody
Fooling with you
If youre snowblind
Madonna can hold you
But if you dont understand
There is nothing she can do for you
Running from the dealer
Trying to save your soul
I can feel the fire
Coming from inside you
I know what its like
Cos Ive been burned before
Aint no mercy
In the hunger but
Youre a fool to yourself
Cos your dealer keeps you begging for more
Running from the dealer
Trying to save your soul
In the beginning all you wanted
Was the calm before the storm
If the bluebird plays the eagle
He finds his song will turn to stone

A dealer in onions is a good judge of scallions.

I prefer drawing to talking. Drawing is faster, and leaves less room for lies.

The principal instances of mass violence in the world today are those committed by governments within their own legally recognized borders. Can we really say there is no response to this? Is it acceptable that such slaughters be dismissed as civil wars, also known as "age-old ethnic hatreds." (After all, anti-Semitism was an old tradition in Europe; indeed, a good deal older than ancient Balkan hatreds. Would this have justified letting Hitler kill all the Jews on German territory?) Is it true that war never solved anything? (Ask a black American if he or she thinks our Civil War didn't solve anything.) War is not simply a mistake, a failure to communicate. There is radical evil in the world, which is why there are just wars.

Easier to Digest
Civil unrest
Civil war
Civil chaos
Or...
My personal favorite,
Civil disobedience!
Which of these has more flavor...
And yet caffeine free?
More taste,
And yet less filling?
'I vote we go with civil unrest!
It's easier to digest...
And maintains that robust appeal.'
Now we are getting somewhere!
And you George...
What would you like?

Altercation
He altercated
with Mrs Orbeck
on the stairs.
Something to do
with him
sneaking women
into his room at night.
None of your business
if I do, he’d said.
But it was of course,
written into the tenant’s
agreement he’d signed
the year before
when he’d been desperate
and she seemed nice.
I will not have
that kind of women
in this house of mine,
she’d boomed, rattling
the rafters, shaking
the windows in their frames.
He noticed as she spoke
a thin fine moustache
on her upper lip
where sweat seemed
to have gathered
threatening to jump
like some weary suicide
on the lip’s edge.
He promised her
he’d not have that
kind of women
in his room again.
She wiped her upper lip
to remove the sweat.
He thought her an ass,
she thought him a pain.
They never had (about
women at any rate)
an altercation again.

Change of life style
The revolution teaches
Change of life style
In a revolution one must
Be a Victor not martyr
In a revolution one must
Take the people with him
In a revolution there must
Be a triumphof good
Over evil.

Bourgeois society is not fundamentally opposed to the bourgeois women's movement, which is proven by the fact that in various states reforms of private and public laws concerning women have been initiated.
