My earliest professional musical experiences were really as a session player, and every day was an adventure. Three sessions a day, every day, and you never knew who you would be working with until you arrived at the studio.

Session Man
He never will forget at all
The day he played at the albert hall.
A million sessions ago it seems.
He is a session man,
A chord progression,
A top musician.
Rock n roll or vocal star[? ],
A philharmonic orchestra,
Everything comes the same to him.
He is a session man,
A chord progression,
A top musician.
Hes not paid to think, just play,
A session man
A session man
A session man
Playing at a different studio every day.
He reads the dots and plays each line,
And always finishes on time.
No overtime nor favors done.
He is a session man,
A chord progression,
A top musician.
Hes not paid to think, just play,
A session man
A session man
A session man

Street Player
Ill never forget those aimless years
Street sounds swirling through my mind
Trouble was often in the air
So we fought to forget our despair
Im a street player
And Ill play you a song
cause you know, my heart & soul
Will carry, carry on
Carry on
Carry on
Carry on
City lifes the only way
Street corners and billiard halls was our home away
Lessons learned still help me today
Im a street player
Ive seen it all
Hitmen, thieves and many a brawl
But as you see I still stand tall
It was such a small space in time
I never knew that I would find
A musical path for all to see
Anxiety into ecstacy
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player
Ive seen it all
Hitmen, thieves and many a brawl
But as you see I still stand tall
It was such a small space in time
I never knew that I would find
A musical path for all to see
Anxiety into ecstacy
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player

We knew we did not want to record at Impulse Studios again, after the experience of recording in a 'real' studio in London for the Radio One session we did.

I always felt as a horn player, a jam session wasn't satisfying enough for me. I should have been a rhythm section player, actually.

He was a professional rugby player in the area that I played as a youngster. So a lot of people who I went to school with knew who he was and knew that he was black. So I would get racist taunts in school.

Since the beginning, I always loved the game. When you grow up in Montreal, one day you want to be a professional hockey player. When I was six or seven, I knew that was what I wanted.

I went from a guy, kind of a working actor, a supporting player, to magazine covers and being offered the studio pictures really quickly. Nobody was comfortable with it. I wasn't really comfortable with it.

Mix Up, Mix Up
Oh lord, oh lord, oh lord, yeah!
Well, its not easy,
Its not easy
Speak the truth, come on, speak. eh, now!
It ever cause it what it will:
He who hide the wrong he did
Surely did the wrong thing still.
Get in the studio of -
Studio of time and experience
Here we experience the good and bad;
What we have, and what we had -
This session (session),
Not just another version (version).
Oh lord, give me a session (session),
Not another version (version)!
Theyre so much stumbling blocks right in-a our way:
Monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday;
Theres so much wanting, so much gaining, so much have done.
Too much little mix-up, in the mix-up, yes!
Too much little mix up!
Too much of this mix up - mix up!
I was born in the country, right on top of the hill
I still remain, I know I still, I will-a,
But through your f...in respect and through your false pride
Someone wanna take jah - jah - jah children for a ride!
Shut up! open the gate, and let the saints through.
Please make it a session (session);
Not another version (version);
Ooh, please make it a session (session);
Not another version (version)!
Hey, you been talkin all your mouth full of lies,
Sitting there toppling and, lord, they criticize.
So through the eyes of the fool the deaf is wise,
And through the eyes of the wise the fool is size.
Saying is too much mix up - mix up!
Saying is too much mix up - mix up!
I wanna clear the wheel once and for all;
I wanna clear my wheels, I dont care who fall!
I gotta clear my wheels once and for all;
Clear my wheels, I dont care who fall - fall:
(too much mix-up - mix-up!)

Dont you know today is a bright holiday? yeah! (holiday)
Some people waiting for the message that you bring,
They listening to every word that youll sing.
Singing: (too much mix-up - mix-up -
(too much little mix up!)
Would you groove along now
(too much mix up - mix up), yeah!
Yes, would you groove along now
(too much little mix-up!)
They just cant stop you know
(too much mix-up - mix-up)! /fadeout/

When you worked in a studio it was the studio system that you kind of missed because it was a big, big family. I mean MGM had 5,000 people working a day there. You miss it.

Certainly one of the more common experiences in the jazz field is discovering someone new. Improvising musicians are capable of being musical travelers, voyagers. We want to join in on whatever we hear. There is a freedom to wander the musical landscape.

There are two sides of me. One is the professional side. When I'm working, I'm not a kid - and can't be. Otherwise no one would take me seriously. When I'm not working, I think I'm a normal 15-year-old.

I did a couple songs with this hip-hop guy named Tim Dark. He was working in the same studio I've been working in, he heard my music and he said, aw man, I've got to do something with you.
Player
Im a player..... girl I thought you knew
When you started messin around with me, knew I wouldnt commit to you
Cause Im a player...... and I know you cant see it in my eyes......
Everyone says that Im innocent, and it should come as no surprise....
That Im a player........... and I really think you need to know
That I cant love you right now baby, cause I need more time to grow.......
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........
Im a player, and Ive traveled all around the world,
Ive broken many hearts, and it really hurts to say this to you girl
But Im a player........ and its kinda sad that it has to be this way,
But I dont wanna lock oyou down until Im ready, so right now, Im gonna play......
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........
[bass guitar plays]
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........

Back 20 years ago, I was recording with Bruce Springsteen, and his producer called me and said I had to be in the studio the next day to finish the sessions, and I couldn't. I had to be in court, in California. All this took like 10 years out of my life.

I still like to keep tapes of the few minutes before the final take, things that happen before the session. Maybe it's superstitious, but I believe if I had done things differently - if I had walked around the studio or gone out - it wouldn't have turned out that way.
