I was very surprised that for a while I could only get cast as straight. It was that way for a few years.

Out of 30 years of Second City I was probably the third African-American with the main stage cast. I was surprised when I first heard that. I think part of the reason that improvisation has never been popular with African-Americans is that it isn't popular in the inner cities.

Your Time Has Come
Now one fell asleep in the street
and he never woke up
And now one died in pieces
whose been with a mouthful of ghosts
And one threatning long ago i saw him
melt in the bright of day
And one laid to rest in the field
on the stories and crawled, hey
I've been walking the sideways
I've stared straight into the sun
Still, I don't know why you're dying
Long before your time has come
Your time has come
Now one took some bullets to the chest and the field gone wrong
One got a little too depressed then he went and jumped the gun
One got shoot right in the face and he somehow
survived
But he doesn't know my name or who I am
and I'm not surprised, hey
I've been walking the sideways
I've stared straight into the sun
Still, i don't know why you're dying
Long before your time has come
Yeah I've been wandering sideways
I've stared straight into the sun
And I don't know why you're dying
Long before your time has come
Your time has come, hey
(Solo)
I've seen fifty thousand names all engraved on a stone
Most of them, met em at a grave years before i was born
All of them left brothers and sisters and mothers behind
And most of their family and friends are alive
everytime
I've been walking the sideways
I've stared straight into the sun
And i don't know why you're dying
Long before your time has come
Yeah I've been wandering sideways
I've stared straight into the sun
And I don't know why you're dying
Long before your time has come (x3)
Your time has come

Not Surprised You Do Not Know Me
I am not surprised you do not know me.
For years our conversations have been about you.
Your likes and dislikes.
Your cravings and appetites.
Your opinions with judgements passed.
And your need to compete...
With my activities,
That affords you some kind of mental relief.
I am not surprised you do not know me.
Nor am I shocked to hear you say...
I do not understand,
A life lived your way!
You are right...
I don't.
And that is why you don't know me!
Nor do I have a need,
For you to begin that now!

Straight Ahead
Day by day, dream by dream.
I fight to find the way to go.
Every day opens a different door.
Every dream shadows the one before.
But slowly I can see
The way youve made for me.
Straight ahead, I can see your light.
Straight ahead, through the dark.
Straight ahead, theres no left or right.
Straight ahead, to your heart.
Carry on through the night,
When the road is hard to find.
Lying lights tell me to turn around.
Lying thoughts tell me Im lost not found.
But clearly I can see
Youre waiting there for me.
Straight ahead, I can see your light.
Straight ahead, through the dark.
Straight ahead, theres no left or right.
Straight ahead, to your heart.
Straight ahead, (straight ahead),
Straight ahead, (straight ahead),
Straight ahead, (straight ahead),
Straight ahead, (straight ahead).
Straight ahead (straight ahead), I can see your light.
Straight ahead, through the dark (through the dark).
Straight ahead, theres no left or right.
Straight ahead, to your heart.
Straight ahead....

The Dead To Clemenceau:
NOVEMBER, 1929
Come (we say) Clemenceau.
Why should you live longer than others? The vacuum that sucked
Us down, and the former stars, draws at you also.
No wrench for a man near ninety.
They were younger who crowded us out of distinction the year you drove them
Like flies on a fire. We don't say it was wrong.
We don't say it was right.
These heavy choices are less than verbal, down here, to us dead.
Never a thorn in the crown of greatness down here.
Not even Wilson laments here
The cuckoo brood of design. This is the cave you conjectured;
Nothing in death, as nothing in life, surprises you.
You were not surprised when France
Put you aside, when the war was finished, as a sick man mending
Puts aside the strong poison that turned his fever.
You'd not be surprised to hear
Your enemies praising your name and the Paris cannon applaud you;
Not surprised, nor much pleased, nor envious of more.
Your negative straightness of mind
And bleached like a drowned man's cast-up thigh-bone by eroding age-
Hardly required the clear corrections of death.

People who treat other people as less than human must not be surprised when the bread they have cast on the waters comes floating back to them, poisoned.

I guess what's most surprised me in most of the reviews is that they don't seem to get the noir story in the dream sequence, so they analyze it like a straight noir movie.

I think people would actually be surprised by what we put out. Unfortunately the shadow that the original founders cast was that they were just artists that can't write books so people swept the whole of Image with that paintbrush.

I don't know many people, if any, who have had some straight line toward success. I mean, they start here, they work hard, they've got what it takes, and they just go straight to the top over some number of years. Most people get a little failure.

Straight Talk
Gimme some straight talk, straight talk -- and hold the sugar please
Straight talk, straight talk -- sounds plenty sweet to me
Dont talk to me in circles in some mumbo-jumbo jive
Gimme just straight talk, straight talk and were gonna be alright
cause I like to know just where I stand, I dont like guessing games
And I hate a bunch of gibberish, so just spit it out real plain
Dont use big educated words from your bs degree
Straight talk, straight talk -- dont try b.s.-ing me
Straight talk, straight talk -- turn loose and let it go
You can tell me anything -- just like on oprahs show
Just tell me how you really feel, be on the up and up
With questions I can understand -- for answers you can trust
Pick up the phone, youre not alone -- weve all got something to say
So listen in and listen up -- well find a better way
With honesty and common sense, its really hard to miss
Straight talk, straight talk -- just tellin it like it is
Straight talk, straight talk -- theres nothing like the truth
Just tell me all your troubles -- pretend Im donahue
So dont be shy, cause we can talk -- you know youve got a friend
Call me, call me -- for simple straight talkin
Whats cookin, america?
Straight talk, straight talk
Straight talk, straight talk
So some on lets talk turkey, just straight and to the point
About passions, about problems, about noses out of joint
Now I want you all to know I care and I do understand
And hey, thanks for lending me and ear out there in radioland
Give me some straight talk, straight talk -- dont sugar coat it please
Straight talk, straight talk -- sounds sweet enough to me
But dont talk to me in circles, in your mumbo-jumbo jive
Straight talk, straight talk -- and were gonna be alright
Straight talk, straight talk -- makes plenty sense to me
Dont talk to me in circles, in your mumbo-jumbo jive
Gimme just straight talk, straight talk -- and were gonna be alright
Gimme just straight talk, straight talk -- and were gonna be alright

We the poet
We the poet hit straight
Our words our actions are straight
Our body our mind our soul being straight.
We the poet welcome all animate inanimate
We worship nature we worship humanity
Our attitude our approach being straight.
We are truthful we are peaceloving
We are straight in ideology
We are not here to favour anybody
We are being always in the side of light.

Take it slow
The trees are nearly, not quite bare
with dead leaves lying everywhere
a crisp bite to the morning air.
A pleasant day for those who dare
desert the comfort of their chair.
Put on their warmest coat and go,
no need to rush just take it slow.
Nature still has much to show
to any wise enough to know.
Just where to look and where to go.
Moving shadows cast by the sun
beneath the hedgerows, every one
is quite unique but too soon gone.
as the rising sun moves on.
Which gives me much to think upon.
I think about the passing years
and realise that all my fears.
Like sun cast shadows disappear
they lack all substance it appears.
Your Autumn years aren’t hard to bear.

It Is Rather Shocking To See
I am not surprised at all,
That today there seems to be...
A lack of comprehension centered,
Around one's identity with a dignity not flaunted.
I am not surprised at all,
To witness this kind of environment.
But it is rather shocking...
To see pitbulls walking their 'owners' on a leash!

Surprised by Joy
Surprised By Joy
Surprised by joy — impatient as the Wind
I turned to share the transport--Oh! with whom
But Thee, deep buried in the silent tomb,
That spot which no vicissitude can find?
Love, faithful love, recalled thee to my mind--
But how could I forget thee? Through what power,
Even for the least division of an hour,
Have I been so beguiled as to be blind
To my most grievous loss?--That thought's return
Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore,
Save one, one only, when I stood forlorn,
Knowing my heart's best treasure was no more;
That neither present time, nor years unborn
Could to my sight that heavenly face restore.

The arrow's green and I turn left.
The arrow's green and I turn left.
Straight, there's a strip mall,
A dealership, a gas station,
Then the road climbs a hill.
My way looks much the same.
It's the end of the day,
My way leads to you and home.
It occurs to me of a sudden
I don't know where I'd be
If I went straight at that intersection.
10 years and I've always turned,
Never seen nor wondered
What lies on up that road,
Beyond that hill.
10 years:
A clock, an extra week of vacation,
A mention at the company meeting,
A plaque whose veneer started peeling
Soon as I got to the car,
So my face, kind of amused,
Shone reflected in its shiny backing.
It's been a good job, I've worked hard,
And the pay's been quite OK.
At home the 10 years will earn me a 'Hey'
And a laugh about the wordless plaque
That as a mirror might be almost useful,
Then the talk will get back
To who said what to whom at school,
To what happened at soccer that afternoon,
To what your mother said on the phone.
After dinner I'll loaf and watch the game.
10 years it's taken me to notice
I never saw a choice.

Straight From The Heart
(bryan adams/ eric kagna)
Producer for bonnie: jim steinman
I could start dreaming but it never ends
As long as youre gone we may as well pretend
Ive been dreaming
And thats straight from the heart
You said its easy but whos to say
That wed be able to keep it this way
But its easier
Coming straight from the heart
Give it to me straight from the heart
Tell me we could make another start
You know Ill never go
As long as I know
Its coming straight from the heart
Ill see you on the street some other time
But all our words will just fall out of line
While were dreaming
Straight from the heart
Give it to me straight from the heart
Tell me we could make another start
You know Ill never go
As long as I know
Its coming straight from the heart
Instrumental
Give it to me straight from the heart
Tell me we could make another start
You know Ill never go
As long as lknow
Its coming straight from the heart
Give it to me straight from the heart
Tell me we could make another start
You know Ill never go
As long as I know
Its coming straight from the heart
You know Ill never go
As long as I know
Its coming straight from the heart
You know Ill never go
As long as I know
Its coming straight from the heart

Straight To Hell
If you can play on the fiddle
Hows about a british reel?
Speaking in quotation
As railhead towns feel the steel
Water froze
Clear as winter ice
This is your paradise
There aint no need for you
There aint no need for you
Go straight to hell boys
Straight to hell boys
You wanna join in a chorus
Of the amerasian blues
When its christmas in ho chi minh
Oh poppa san take me home
See me got a photograph of you mamma-san
Oh poppa san take me home
Oh take me home
Straight to hell
Go straight to hell
Go straight to hell boys
Straight to hell
Can you cough it up loud and strong
The immigrants
Wanna sing all night long
It could be anywhere
Could be any hemisphere
And no mans land
And there aint no asylum here
King solomon he never lived round here
Go straight to hell boys
Go straight to hell boys
Straight to hell
Straight to hell boys

She Needs Years To Make A Poem
i am not surprised with what she just said
to make a poem of her life
she needs years and years
perhaps a hundred years
if need be to make the best poem
of her life
her words are days and days
her stanzas her dwelling place
her commas and punctuations
her naps and long hours of sleep
her poem is her life
she lives inside it
she breathes every word every letter
and when she reads it when it is finished
she speaks her last, hounding silence
