The Honeymoon Is Over
The honeymoon is over
And he has left for work
Whistling something obvious from La Boheme
And carrying a brown calfskin attache case
I never dreamed he was capable of owning,
Having started the day
With ten pushups and a cold shower
Followed by hearty breakfast.
(What do we actually have in common?)
The honeymoon is over
And I am dry-mopping the floor
In a green Dacron dry-mopping outfit from Saks,
Wondering why I'm not dancing in the dark,
Or rejecting princes,
Or hearing people gasp at my one-man show,
My god, so beautiful and so gifted!

Where has the mother, father, kid, and happy family gone?
Where is the love the mother gave her child when it was first born?
Where is the genuine positivity that saved us from despair?

The bathroom was like a sanctuary
As a teenager
the bathroom was
like a sanctuary.
A place where
in privacy
I could in nudity
reflect on life
and soak in hot water
and wash every thing dirty
away from me.
I was undisturbed until
my mother married again
and one of my stepsisters
had a small girl
who used to follow me
and when I was eighteen
and she was about thirteen.
time and time again
she somehow
unlocked the bathroom
and walked in on me.
From where I shouted her out
in anger and shock
and wasn’t amused
to get a shouting back
from a step father
who wasn’t a dad to me
and didn’t see
anything wrong with it.
Thinking back
it might have been something
in her genetics
or a lack of good moral standing,
since her mother (my ex step sister)
who was quite beautiful,

Inside Outside
She sat on the bed quietly reading a letter
Inside the room was sweaty and dark. Outside
it was bright and hot. Hoping it would get better
she read on. The birds sang a negligible reel
outside, while she half-listened to a flute on the radio
noodling through the sheaves of an accompaniment.
The letter never got any better. One by one, its leaves
slipped through her fingers onto the floor.
Done, she got up to go to the bathroom
and splash water on her face. Nice to believe
that what she decided was based on principle,
she thought, but she suspected it wasn't at all,
But rather on merest Need-like some old-time
marriages, which is a kind of principle, after all,
the mother of them all, the mother of all motives:
Maybe principle doesn't exist at all, she thought,
timidly, unallied to Need, as if the thought were a sin.
Or maybe it did. Anyway, this was not at all
the desired outcome, so she must flee, slip away,
never to be seen again.
