When I was in college, I was the editor of the literary magazine and insisted neither the editors nor the writers be specifically identified-only our student numbers appeared on the title page. I love that idea and still do.

Which editor? I can't think of one editor I worked with as an editor. The various companies did have editors but we always acted as our own editor, so the question has no answer.

Book Of Days

Your life is as a book
Written on the pages are the weeks
For you would give anything to take just one look
Into the next chapter, the next page

Each page is a new thought, a new dream
Sometimes it takes so long to pass that page
And sometimes nothing is as it seams
For you know you can not go ahead or back

You know you are where you are
You know you can't change that
As you read page to page, so near to fear
You write the chapters as you go, with each turn

Each turn, each move changes what's to come
And you know each moment could be the last
With this in mind you go so mumb
So numb to the touch, to the thought

You turn page after page
until you reach the 'end'
And only then, you are freed from the title
The title that has kept your thoughts bound, and tight

You turn the pages one by one
You take the pain, take the joy
Until you are done
And your story becomes another on the shelf of eternity

The market for short stories is hard to break into, but a magazine editor isn't always looking for big names with which to sell his magazine - they're more willing to try stories by newcomers, if those tales are good.

Two Unpublished Authors Await Publication

Julia Doyle arrived at Spinoza HS
with visions of creating a real Community
and to that end she announced
all submissions from the faculty
would be published in the school’s
literary magazine.
One day in the Teacher’s Center
Minna Cohen asked Julia,
“When’s the magazine coming out? ”
“Soon...but I didn’t understand a word.”
I immediately said, “Julia, you promised us
we’d get published.”
“I thought Minna would do a love story.”
“Not much love the last decade, ” she said
“Imagination, Minna. You’ve got that…
at least I hope so…
no writer can function without it.”
Minna muttered, “You said I’d make it
no matter what, just no dirty words
that’s what you said.
I need this…
just stick it in…
anyplace.”
Julia stared at Minna saying, “You’re in.”
”Thank God.”
“But Auschwitz? for a student magazine?
and so confusing, the entire story
a six page monologue of mixed up words.”
“I can see that because the narrative’s
part of a larger work I’ve been writing
for the last eleven years
about the life of Hannah Greenberg,
a doctor and survivor of Auschwitz
who went mad thirty years
after her incarceration. The Death Camp
deposited a time bomb in her soul.”
“But, Minna, you only gave the insanity.”
“How about my story? ” I asked blurted out.
“A fat man’s saga into stroke.”
“Yes.”
“I expected humor, after all
you’re a funny guy.”
“Not all fat men are funny, ” I said,
more bitterly than I intended.
“Yes, I’m sorry, but the entire tale
is uniformly dismal, yet I felt no sadness…
sorry, Bernstein, but…
why didn’t he just stop eating? ”
“Insanity, ” said Minna, her voice
so soft, so calm, but with such certainty,
“still here
now
the whole world.”

Reason

Reason
Reason's season too few seize on
Responses fair. Reaction's treason -
Rhymed or prose - too seldom frees one
Rose thought mind's bees land with ease on.
Refuse subjective judgements' lease on
Rational logic, right brain keys on
Reach to teach each just one flees none.

notes
PLEIADES: This titled form was invented in 1999 by Craig Tigerman, Sol Magazine's Lead Editor. Only one word is allowed in the title, followed by a single seven-line stanza. The first word in each line begins with the same letter as the title. Rhyming is not required but may be used for added effect.

A Novice Desire, An Essay On Writing

The novice
wanted to write something
strange different inlaid
with the wonder,
of a few of the values
which are important,
but which society
seems to lack
or have forgotten.

Which need remembering
and should be brought
to the for again
for the consideration
and possibly the advancement
of the state of mind.
Drawing from life,
previous experience,
memories, imagination,
and the pursuit
of the elusive idea.

Some writers
seem to know
almost nothing
in real terms
of the reality
of which they wrote.
Their work
lacks depth,
an acceptable degree
of accuracy
sincerity.

Some have settled
for cheap,
commercialized
mass production,
centred
on public interest
subjects
in pursuit
of the quick buck.

Or write within
the acceptable
guide lines
which many editors
dictate
and often demand.
Which has
been done
millions
of times before.
Stating
nothing unique?

Style and a definite
minimum standard,
enriched
with original thought
where appropriate,
should form
part of purposed
subject matter.

Realizing of course
that true originality
may prove
a mixed
ungrateful master,
devoid
of general acceptance
or understanding?

It has never
seemed right
or important
to me
to produce
merely
for the sake
of producing.

Or to write
in a style
that is pleasing
or acceptable
to any given editor.
If I write
anything
it is for
own personal
enjoyment.

To express
in the manner
I enjoy most
or deem fitting.
And especially
for the pleasure
and benefit,
of those who might
appreciate and feel
enriched after reading
a given piece.

I would like
to share
an idea or thought
with the reader
in the only
way possible.

Because
it is not possible
to always meet
people
we are drawn to
and would like
to converse with.

Nor to hold
indefinitely
creative thoughts
in the mind.
If thoughts
are to be
preserved
and shared
thoughts
must be committed
to the printed page.

On My Worth As A Writer

On my worth as a writer I do cast great doubt
Though one could never run out of things to write about
And poetasters are many and poets they are rare
Yet so much to write on of the big World out there
One can say I've written a whole heap of stuff
Yet out of millions of writers few are good enough
To make a success out of the wordsmith trade
So many there are and so few make the grade
Not many writers the literary critics impress
And so few out of writing become a success
For every literary success of which we do read
So many are destined to never succeed
And only a tiny minority do make writing pay
But then such is life as some are known to say.
