There's just not a lot of guys around playing like that these days; a lot of steel players are plugging into stomp boxes, trying to sound like Jeff Beck on a steel guitar.

I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off.

Steel Meets Steel
Back in 1095, when the call to arms came
We had the red cross sown on
Sent to save the holy land and crush the infidels
With strength from above
Steel meets steel
On towards victory we march, the guiding star
Lead us to the battle field
There, the heathens were subdued, and in the end
We forced them all to yield or die
Steel meets steel
In july in 99, the holy city was stormed and won
Jerusalem was freed, we thanked the lord for our glory
We, the templars, have survived by honor and pride
And the blessing of the sword
The quest of the war, forever sung
To the sound of steel meets steel
Steel meets steel

I don't put myself on Jeff Beck's level, but I can relate to him when he says he'd rather be working on his car collection than playing the guitar.

Steel River
I was born and raised on steel river
I see it all like it was yesterday
The ships and bridges they were all delivered
From sydney harbour to the cisco bay
And I met my love down on steel river
We served our dreams and spent our childhood days
In rainy streets wed kiss away the shivers
And hide from fear inside the latest craze
Dancing to motown
Making love with carole king record playing
And oh how I loved you
Say goodbye steel river
Ten thousand bombers hit the steel river
And many died to keep her running free
And she survived but now shes gone forever
Her burning heart is just a memory
And I ran away from life on steel river
Luck or not I gladly took the break
The odds were low the chances nearly zero
A chance it was I had to take
Say goodbye steel river
They say that salmon swim in steel river
They say its good to see them back again
I know it hurts to see what really happened
I know one salmon aint no good to them
They were born and raised to serve their steel mother
It was they taught and all they ever knew
And they believed that she would keep their children
Even though not a single word was true
Say goodbye steel river

Ben Crawley Steel Company
The next train arrives on here at five o nine
Im standing where my daddy used to be
To follow his footsteps takes me three stops down the line
Down to the ben crawley steel company
Well I tried my hand at ranching but this didnt come off
Seems nothing in that for me
It always tried my patience which I havent enough
Im destined to work in a steel company
Just you wait at home for me little woman
By now I should know how lovely you will be
Waiting by the door for me little woman
Now I wont moan when I get home from the ben crawley steel company
When crawley makes the jokes and four guys laugh a lot
Damn, force a grin if you can
I got so many words on the tip of my tongue to shoot him down
But hed soon replace a mere steel driving man
Just you wait at home for me little woman
Although I know you wont be as tired as me
Waiting by the door for me little woman [my true lovin woman]
Well I wont slack when I get back from the ben crawley steel company
Well Ive had my fill and its giving me hell, now its time for hate
Thanks mister for telling me
So Ill shoot if I can and I wont [dont] give a damn about playing it
Straight
My friends and the lord know what hes done [he did] to me
Hes being staying at home with my little woman
Playing in the fields where I should always be
Its hard to forgive my own little woman
And to find a job cos I just blew up that steel company
Heh!

Steel & Glass
(this is a story about your friend and mine
Who is it, who is it, who is it? )
There you stand with your l.a. tan
And your new york walk and your new york talk
Youre mother left you when you were small
But youre gonna wish you wasnt born at all
Steel and glass
Steel and glass
Steel and glass
Steel and glass
Your phone dont ring no one answers your call
How does it feel to be off the wall
Well your mouthpiece squawks as he spreads your lies
But you cant pull strings if your hands are tied
Well your teeth are clean but your mind is capped
You leave your smell like an alley cat
Steel and glass
Steel and glass
Steel and glass
Steel and glass

Heart Of Steel
Music by Barry Manilow
Lyrics by John Bettis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I used to be such a soft touch
I gave too much
Love always came down losing
Well the news is
I'm not for using
You can't break this heart of steel
You won't see me down on my knees again
You can't break this heart of steel
Lovin' you gave me a heart of steel
Knock on my door if you want to
Some night I might not want you
You taught me all the devices
Now my prices are the highest
You can't break this heart of steel
You won't see me down on my knees again
You can't break this heart of steel
Lovin' you gave me a heart of steel
You could have had me for all time
Now the pleasure I'm having is all mine
You can't break this heart of steel
You won't see me down on my knees again
You can't break this heart of steel
Lovin' you gave me a heart of steel

Well, to tell you the straight honest truth, it was like a Grateful Dead cover band. I didn't feel - and nothing against the guys - I didn't feel that they were opening up like they should. I'll tell you what, with guitar players, Steven has what I like in guitar players.

Zombie Stomp
I don't need a doctor
But I need something to kill the pain
Don't know what I'm after
But the pressure's driving me insane
Searching for a different role
Had a funny feeling I can't hide
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Why can't they just let me be
Alone without the misery
Hey, hey, do the Zombie, Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Flirting with disaster
Morning after killing me again
Hiding from the laughter
And the demons dancing round my brain
Always dancing on thin ice
I guess I'll have to pay the price
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Thinkin' how it could have been
If I had never let them in
Hey, hey, do the Zombie, Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Take me to the doctor
'Cause I feel it coming on again
Don't know where I'm going
'Cause I guess I don't know where I've been
Looking for a different ride
Always dancing on thin ice
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Thinking how it could have been
If I had never let them in
Hey, hey, do the Zombie, Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp
Hey, hey, do the Zombie Stomp

Gates Of Steel (demo Alternate Version)
Twist awy the Gates of Steel
Unlock the secret voice
Give in to ancient noise
take a chance a brand new dance
Twist away the Gates of Steel
Twist away, now twist and shout
The Earth it moves too slow.
But the Earth is all we know
We pay to play the human way..
Twist away the Gates of Steel (a man is real, not made of steel!)
But the Earth is all we know,
we pay to play the human way
twist away the Gates of Steel
The beginning was the end
(of every thing now)
The ape regards his tail
(he's stuck on it)
Repeats until he fails,
half a goon and half a god,
a man's not made of steel

There was nobody at the time who was playing slide guitar like Johnny, and nobody, or no white guys at least, that was playing country blues like that on the acoustic guitar. And it was at that point that I realized what Johnny had to offer.

A Life Without Music
If
I cannot listen
to the sound of music,
guitar playing
steel pan beating
sweet echo
of a melodious voice -
reggae or rock
calypso bacchanal,
as I watch
the Atlantic rushing
to wet my feet,
let my coconut water
and rum
dance like the waves,
then I'd rather
turn the light out
from the blue skies
because I have no life to live;
deep in my heart
a life without music
is a life without love.

I was also very lucky to be a teammate of two of the greatest players to have ever played the game. I learned very early on by playing for Frank Robinson and with Henry Aaron that even the greatest players in the game were just one of the guys.

Fistfull Of Steel
Huh!
Check it...uggh!
Silence
Something about silence makes me sick
'Cause silence can be violent
Sorta like a slit wrist
If the vibe was suicide
Then you would push da button
But if ya bowin' down
Then let me do the cuttin'
Some speak the sounds
But speak in silent voices
Like radio is silent
Though it fills the air with noises
Its transmissions bring submission
As ya mold to the unreal
And mad boy grips the microphone
Wit' a fistful of steel
Yeah...and mad mad boy grips the microphone
Wit' a fistful of steel
Wit' a fistful of steel
('Cause I know the power of the question)
Wit' a fistful of steel
Wit' a fistful of steel
(And I won't stop 'cause I know the power of the question)
It's time to flow like the fluid in ya veins
If ya will it
