I teach one semester a year, and this year I'm just teaching one course during that semester, a writing workshop for older students in their late 20s and early 30s, people in our graduate program who are already working on a manuscript and trying to bring it to completion.

I would sign on for projects that were meant to shoot in July, and then they would postponed and they would bleed into the following semester, and then I'd take a semester off, and then the movie would collapse.

In 1967, the students at San Francisco State invited the poet Amiri Baraka to the campus for a semester. He attracted other influential black writers such as Sonia Sanchez, Ed Bullins, Eldridge Cleaver. What emerged was something we called the community communications program. That's how I got involved; I got involved in a little play.

School in 6/8 meter
I'm feeling a little.. human today
The bags and the books that I carry each day...
...to classes.. I don't want to go to but..
these are the new days. I must learn and shut up.
The teachers.. hit me with all of their stuff..
The school yard is full and the assignments rough.
And study..I must just to get to the next..
big step to the finalized work and the text
is bright..I must say the lectures are deep
I have this feeling that I will loose some sleep.
This new.. school semester is quite a change
from last year in junior college. I'll arrange...
to keep.. up with all the kids half my age.
To be the great class mate and not an old sage.
I'd like.. to be just another kid there
It's nice how they don't peer at me, they don't stare..
and wonder why that a woman this old
is here with the elementary. Fit the mold...
...of what.. they teach to become a success.
I'm just here to learn, graduate with the rest.

Epistle
Dear law students,
The semester is over, and I am
Your nightmare finished off by you by simply waking up
and breathe & recover. Fan yourselves, loosen your shirts.
I know I am the sum of your bad days for the whole semester,
Assigning you cases as Thick as three cabinets and
Giving you quizzes every meeting which
You think are nothing but trivial flaunts and show of a
Law teacher needing much attention. I suspect that you
Backbite me and consider me as Judge Terror on the loose
Eliminating the chaff from the grain, the bones from the
Cartilage and those whose guts are weak must, as
Humbly asked, pack up his wits and get his bolo and just
Plant camote & yam in his mountain. My car got scratches and
I spent a part of my meager salary to repair the marks of
Your suppressed cruelty. You read two books in political law, exclude
The assigned 3O cases or so, add another 20 and the handouts
Too. The law classes are long and weary and focus
Yes, focus is important, starts at 5: 30 to 8: 30 p.m. when
You could have rested in you cozy homes and watched the
Prime news and soap operas or the latest Oscar winning
Films. It has been a wonderful semester but sad enough
After I checked your final exams some may have to repeat
The course again. I said may. I am writing you this letter
And you may not read this. This time some of you may
Have been preparing for Lent this March, when the sun
Is hottest, when the dust is too dusty, when the church
Is too crowded, when all of us must reflect what sins have
We inflicted upon each other. Well, I guess, you have studied
A lot, and suffered that much, but try to look at it in
Another perspective, and let me ask you,
Did you learn a lot about political law this grueling semester?
Do not tell me your answer. I am not interested. I do not mind
Anymore how you call me names when you are drunk with
Your classmates in your favorite videoke bars.
Good luck, have a happy summer break. Dream some more.
I remain. Judge Terror.

My fellow students there were very smart, but the really novel thing was that they actually seemed to put a lot of effort into their school work. By the end of my first semester there, I began to get into that habit as well.

Wrapping It Up
Two papers more,
Two lovers more,
Wrapping it up with the muse of my love;
But the semester-exams are about to start,
So emancipate your mind with the muse of my love!
The rain is about to fall and i am wrapping up my works,
But be ready to learn from my muse because of this weather!
And like the words from your sweet lover,
But the semester exams are about to start.

Last Year
I may be in my Junior year.
But next year is my last year.
As I look back on the time I’ve been here,
And it feels like my first day as a freshman.
No matter what year I’m in school, I will always be meeting new people.
Most of the people I meet is the people who had moved away,
Now coming back.
Half the friends you come in with,
Will end up being half the friends you won’t be friends with.
So far what I am trying to say is that you need cherish the moments you have.
In a blink of an eye it will all be over.
You say your years won’t be like that
And when you graduate you say where does it go.
My Last Year’s about to begin! !

My total year's income from working as hard as I possibly could from writing went from like $30 one year to about $70 the next year. And it made me realize that maybe you couldn't really pay the rent that way.

Wishing......
I wish.............a lot of things
i wonder do you too?
i wish that i could be older
and ride a pony too
i wish that i could just be me
and not try to be you
because i was made in God's image
and he sees us all the same, just like we should do
i wish that i could graduate
in a year to come
i wish that i wouldn't have to stay for two more years at all
i wish that i could have a lot of money
even though it won't bring happiness
i wish that i could just be me
i wish
i wish
i wish

Funky New Year
Went to a party just last night
Wanted to bring the year in right
Woke up this morning I don't know how
Last night I was a happy man, but the way I feel right now
It's gonna be a FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
Ooo, Ahh, got to be a FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
Can't remember when I ever felt worse
Nothing matters and everything hurts
They were passin' round the bottle, made me feel brand new
Trouble with the new man he wants a hit too, hit me
FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
oooooo, it's a FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
Lord, mmm, FUNKY NEW YEAR
Nurse I'm worse FUNKY NEW YEAR
I got to perk up a little FUNKY NEW YEAR
My hair hurts FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
A party baby
Never again FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
Who's shoes are these FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
Party hardy baby FUNKY NEW YEAR
FUNKY NEW YEAR
What year is this anyway?

A Faithful Witness
To the firstborn of Yahseph,
Of all that is created;
To the secondborn of Yahseph,
Do set set your mind on Mount Zion;
For His name is His glory and,
Of the economic well-being.
Of the year of the rat,
Of the year of the dog,
Of the year of the cow,
Of the year of the bull,
Of the year of the sheep,
Of the year of the dragon,
Of the year of the snake,
Of the year of the pig,
Of the year of the goat,
Of the year of the lizard,
Of the year of the crocodile,
Of the year of the elephant,
Of the year of the scorpion,
Of the year of the turtle,
Of the year of the fish,
Of the year of the earth,
Of the year of the wind,
Of the year of the fire,
Of the year of the water,
And of the year of the bush!
Like the firstborns of slaves.
The hips of romance,
The faithful witness will not lie;
The same day,
The same night,
Of the love shared at where no oxen are;
And the crib was very clean.

Gone (In memory of my Grandpa)
Grew up without a father in my life.
15 years passed me by having a grandpa that truly cared.
Took me anywhere I wanted to go.
Teaching me from right and wrong, when mom was at work.
Never thought it would end like this.
On that last week of school hard-aching every moment while
I was there trying to get by, not trying to cry.
May 26,2005 gone 15 years of my life flashed before
my very own two eyes.
Every Razorback game on tv, we watched together.
He never let me down.
Supported me in anything I did.
Sitting here thinking its been almost a year, one long
year since he's been gone
Can't believe its been that long.
Missing him so, wishing he was still here, here to see
me graduate next year.
You never know what you've got until its gone before
your very own two eyes.

New Year resolutions
One year gone,
New year comes.
Old resolutions achieved,
New resolutions planned.
We’re one year older, and
A year wiser.
We’re wiser, older, and
A year gone.
New hope and new vision,
Envision your dream,
Plan your dream,
Dare your dream.
Realize your dream,
Dream your dream,
Vision your dream,
Achieve your dream.
New resolutions here,
Old resolutions gone.
New lives, new you,
New Year, new resolutions.
New Year Arrives,
Happy New You,
Happy New Year,
Happy & Merry Year.
