The negative is comparable to the composer's score and the print to its performance. Each performance differs in subtle ways.

We were working with this lousy print and it just wasn't going to be good enough. I said that we should get the original negative and do it from that. Well, a couple guys pointed out that the negative was locked up over at Deluxe.

I dare suggest that the composer would do himself and his music an immediate and eventual service by total, resolute and voluntary withdrawal from this public world to one of private performance and electronic media.

When you are new to the business, you think if you give a really bad performance, that's one they will print. You will be judged. You just have to be brave.

What I think I have in common with the school of deconstruction is the mode of negative thinking or negative awareness, in the technical, philosophical sense of the negative, but which comes to me through negative theology.

Any composer who is gloriously conscious that he is a composer must believe that he receives his inspiration from a source higher than himself.

Thought Print, Life Print
from time print
comes thought print
and from there life print
and from there
every person's
chance to relive
a million times
easy as the sun rises

But in fact if you look at film as a metaphor, only through the negative can you have the positive print. What I'm trying to get to is the positive value of negation.

I find respect for a mediocre British composer, as opposed to a really good American, ridiculous because they automatically respect a composer if he's from England.

I dream of a collaboration that would finally be total, in which the librettist would often think as a composer and the composer as a librettist.

I really liked doing a number of the projects and directors, and etc., etc., I knew about half-way through that I would never be doing that again. It's just not me. I really am happy as a part-time film composer, not a full-time film composer.

Performance
We are all performers
on a daily stage,
each of us having a part
to play the best we can
from waking in the morning
to sleeping late at night.
Every performance
is watched from on high
and he sends us a message
when we get our performance wrong.
He tell us in his own way
how to mend the performance
that we gave,
then we go out and start
all over again,
only this time
to right the wrongs we made.

Ars Gratia
If none recall beginning how can end
present a launching pad to bleed penned thought,
the point is taken with emotions caught,
the rune to score the score to tune and mend.
No cut no quill Will needs to print the page
as soldiers twenty six are drilled to play
a part or to engage, reflections sway, -
“go with the flow” and [t}ease shrill strain away.
From ultra violent or to infra read
It matters not as notes that now are sown
form part of parcel of what once was known,
will yet become, door open wide ahead.
Reality and dreams remain the same,
no code, no key, no st[r]ain – let promise flame…

I used to be more dogmatic, more disciplined and segregated about my time to work; now I have to jump from one song to another, or score a scene in a movie, then get out the door for a performance at a moment's notice. The illusion of control over my schedule is totally obsolete.

Just One Minute
Mind is very beautiful phenomenon,
It thinks what we want it to,
If something is sensed being negative,
It provides us the complete chain of how those things could be perceived of being negative,
This develops a fog of negativity and pathetic egoism,
And then the soul; So much child,
Can't balance the facts of positive and negative,
So take your chances and gush the water of truth in the mind,
Believe me...
It just takes a minute...

I had to do this very aggressive, big score in a very short time, and knowing that in the beginning, middle, and end would be this very, very famous theme, but I still had to weave a score around it and make it work as a score was really challenging.

Nowhere Under The Sun To Be Seen
If to win means that much to anyone,
Feeling a need to campaign for popularity...
Instead of quality or integrity of a performance,
Delivered.
Then that one seeking to be praised,
Will eventually witness the day...
A deserved negative attention is received.
To leave those deeds claimed to have been done,
Nowhere under the Sun to be seen by anyone...
Hoping to uncover either proof or evidence,
To merit the giving of apologies...
And a wished forgiveness for a misunderstanding.
