I don't think Capote loved Smith. But he did make a deep connection. It upset some people, because that had never been the approach to journalistic crime writing, to look into the mind of the killer.

It's a manipulation thing.
Of course...
If you tell people they are fantastic.
And convince them they are great.
They will do anything to keep that fed!
Even if they have to pay someone,

It's the 'I'm okay BUT you are marvelous' approach
To good duping!
And an excellent salesman,
Will always feed the ego of a suspected client first!
That's good business.
Some try the 'you-are-not-as-good-as-you-think-you-are' approach,

Only to find themselves quickly dismissed.

I’m writing this at your funeral.
As I watch all the people in tears.
