Most Americans have some experience with nursing homes or other long term care settings, and nearly half have had a family member or close friend in a home in the past three years.

Social Security Reform

They have found an answer for social security
Put them in a nursing home, no liability
Medicaid and medicare will probably have to pay
Then they'll only live a year or two and become their prey
The nursing home corporations, will get rich
And the social security payments, they can ditch
Who's powerful enough to point a finger at them
Some politicians is where it all will stem
The corporations make large contributions
Giving social security great solutions
Let's change the laws and cap health care liabilty
And hurt the care in nursing homes, supposed to be tranquilty
I guess when people get old, they don't need a voice
After all it's not their own, it's the goverments choice!

We Just Have To Make The Best Of It...

these are the lines of
a 90 year-old widower just put in the nursing home
trying to put the pieces again
those past parts
no longer fit as she agrees with her son
that she does not serve
any purpose
at all in that old house
with a closed door never to be opened again
how she resigned from the usual cooking and baking
and putting the flowers in the vase
half watered
as she talks to another wrinkled woman sitting next to her
she mutters, 'Lady, we just have to make the best of what we are now'

Then the other quipped, 'Do i look ninety? '

Outside the nursing home,
the snow begins to fall.

0078 Thanksgiving Day

A celebration of the grace
of the past, or
a celebration of the grace
of today?

For thousands of years,
the Native Americans
whose origin is so mysterious
held, as do all the peoples in the world,
a celebration of the harvest
now brought home, rejoicing
in its abundant wealth and
offering gratitude to that source
from which it comes - as do we...

And how ironic, looking back,
that the Pilgrim Fathers, unprepared,
as many townsfolk among them were,
for the art of farming in a foreign land,
were taught, from those thousands of organic years
of experience, by those very native Americans -

Wouldn't you like to have seen, been there,
that day in 1621, as settlers
and the invited Indian chiefs
sat down together to celebrate the harvest
in brotherhood?

And then, today: beside remembrance of the past,
how beautiful to dedicate a day
to thinking, listing, all the many things
which we may be truly grateful for.
Will a day be long enough?

It's said, that every year
the day after the Thanksgiving feast
the wild turkeys of America, gathering,
as Native Americans of ancient, brown-faced line,
with lively turkey-trot and song and
stuffing themselves in rather
more natural ways, celebrate
survival

In a system where the cost of care is hidden by taxes levied on your income, property, and business activities, it is no wonder why so many Americans rely on Medicaid to pay their long term care.

Nursing Home

The moat in my eyes never bring me no sleep
They just strap me inside with the demons I keep
Gotta leave me alone gotta let it be lone
Tired of living, too tired to die
Makes the sharks keep swimming when he dont know why
Gotta get the lean fin
Only thin that he wears
Nursing me to the movie that he shows
Nursing me to the bureau and the ?
Nursing me cant you leave me alone?
Nursing me in a nursing home
Sleeping and working and an old man
Come just to profit my feet with a broken old hose
Stop riding those rails
Stop setting those sails
He likes (boom boogie ? ? )
Hes got an old trombone
While hes laughing at the fires with a broken beat phone
Got a troubled soul
But hes not that cold
(chorus)
Ive been nursed ten years in a nursing home!
Stinking on water I could use me food
He needed big fat gravy on the wake of pot roast
Got a fire inside
Its gonna burn him alive
Talking and struggle till the roof is blown
Got a bed and three squares in a nursing home
Gonna say bye-bye
Hes gonna walk on by

I want to believe

I want to believe in heaven there is a place
More comforting than a mothers heart
I want to believe there is a secure embrace
For all, when it becomes our time to part

I want to believe eternal peace, exists there
How one arrives has no consequence
I want to believe it’s full of love and care
Passing through a gate with no fence

I want to believe souls are free to roam
And warm precious smiles abound
I want believe it’s a familiar home
Everyone with friends and family around

I want to believe no one feels alone
Always there’s music and dance
I want to believe angels have flown
And all there will get that chance

I want to believe until my time comes
A divine power will be watching above
I want to believe the same for everyone
Never a soul should be without love
A beloved friend or family member gone
I believe always a family’s love goes on

I Have A Friend

I have a friend who cannot walk
I have a friend all he does is talk

I have a friend, Philippe is his name
I have a friend and we are just the same

I have a friend he’s seventeen years old
I have a friend who has a heart of gold

I have a friend who would catch me if I fall
It is only that he has no legs at all

I have a friend and when my friend was seven
A car ran over him and he almost went to heaven

I have a friend with a smile that I adore
I have a friend who lives in a house of four

I have a friend his family is his home
I have a friend who dreams of visiting Rome

I have a friend who is still finishing school
Yet some people tell him that for that he is a fool

I have a friend they say he is disabled
He has no legs and for that he is labeled

I have a friend who has a friend
They were made for each other; their love will never end

I have a friend who likes to name the stars
I have a friend and what he hates is cars

I have a friend who’s happier than you and me
I have a friend who’s shown me how happy I can be

I have a friend who’s had his bad times too
I have a friend who’s better than me and you

I have a friend so dear to me and kind
That another one like him I shall never find!

Homes Not a Home

Homes not a home without you
Homes not home without the ones you love
Homes not a home when one is missing
That missing one is the heart of the home
To to make the home a home again you go looking for them
in good weather or bad weather
You look all over town..
Screaming and shouting their name.
Making all kind of sounds
Hooting and a hollering.
and carring on.
just to make a point.
missing one, come home...
you are loved.
come home safe
return to us
a homes not a home with out you
you are unique
you are rare
Theres no one like you.
you, we can't replace..
come home come home
so home can be a home again.

My life with Oprah

In 1986 I started a new chapter in my life
New town, new job and being a new wife
Just 18, had the world by the tail
Going down a path that nothing in this world could derail
Started watching Oprah, as I took care of my home
The world was a wonderland that I just needed to roam
Family and friends were as close as the air
Naïve and wide eyed, no stress and no care
For 25 years I’ve seen and felt many things
Life isn’t always easy God knows what it brings
Still married with a family of my OWN
My family, my life and I have grown
Something’s in life now conclude
As I stop and reflect in this brief interlude

Nursing Home Blue

Nursing Home Blues

I sent mother to a nursing home, she didn´t want
to go but I ignored her wishes, we often do that
when concerning old people, we say it is for their
own good, but the truth is I didn´t know what
else to do. Mother became quite rebellious they
called me from the home she was throwing food
about and demanded, when she evacuated, that
an assistant come and dry her bum.

Wanted to go home, there was no home she had
lived in a rented flat and someone else lived there.
When she knew she she felt betrayed, her silence
was damning. She stopped eating, gaunt, a skeleton
before death came as a relief. Now that I´m old too
families telling me I should not ride on my scooter
in case I might fall off…like should I care.

The Nursing Home

The Nursing Home
by James Alexandros Papastamos
I
Imprisoned by such hands of time
That rape, incest, and so infect
The body, mind, perhaps the soul
Of those whose crime was age…at best
II
Each wrinkle drew to map their world
When they were young, its mountains rose
But seas would drown in shallow pools
Of joy, reflection, guilt, remorse

III
Though age, itself, is not so bad
The windows come to those who’ve seen
The best of all and worse to come
May those who’ve aged live on…in dreams

IV
In nursing homes that foster such

A hole in the roof

The old prison cell and there's no ceiling
And a hole in the roof.
The person in confinement
Who sees the night sky.
No changes at all
The old stars and the Moon as earlier.
The North star seems very old
And the bachelor thinks of the next-door widow Violet and her whereabouts.
And he's not seen his old friend Jack Daniel's smile since a long time.
Someone says the President's Birthday comes soon and there will be an amnesty for prisoners?
He's sentenced for ten years and the half of the term almost gone.

Homeless in a House

I ask you simply, what is home?

A place where kindred people come?

A space where residents reside?

What makes a home a home inside?

I ask you now, is home a house?

Can people buy homes with their spouse?

In houses can a family be

together for eternity?

I say to you, it is not so!

A home is where a man will go

to seek his flames of strife to douse.

A home he seeks, and not a house.

Inside a home a man has love:

From here below, and from above.

At home, he'll be with family

for time and all eternity.

The Facts Are In The Doing

I know of no 'other' one...
NO ONE,
Who would turn their back...
On their worldly possessions,
To come to the aid of another.
Whether that person was a family member,
Friend or a lover, sister or brother.
And to do this is the height of sacrifice.
That puts to the test one's faith, courage and stamina.
And to experience the doing of this 'twice'...
Is an act that can not or will not,
Ever be comprehended by others to be explained.
The facts are in the doing to know what has been done.
And to hear others say what they can not do...
Can leave another to feel embittered,
By overhearing this confession of weakness.

The Song Of An Old Man

i

his song is sad
a white man in the nursing home
his children sent him there
and they did not bother

ii

the Filipina nurses him
everyday she takes care of him
as he pees
as he poos
she needs the money
she sends her children back in her country
to school
she needs the green bucks to pay her debts
she too has a sad song

iii

and there in the nursing home
the Filipina and the old white man sing their sad songs
they have broken hearts
one waits for his happy death
another one looks for her sad life

Back Home

(dieter bohlen)
Producer for bonnie: dieter bohlen
Recorded in 1994, bonnies last single on the hansa label. this single was to promote the comeback singles collection 90-94. lyrics taken from careful listening.
I dream of home again
A thousand voices call to me
A cry that splits the night
Woke up the soul inside my memories
I chose to walk alone
To search and find my destiny
So many lonesome roads
Lead me away from where I long to be
When I awake and see a cold and empty room
I sit alone and think of places I once knew
The friends that I had loved and left behind
Oh, how could I have been so blind?
Back home
Where all the love is that I need
Where all my family waits for me
Back home
I close my eyes and I can see
Where the river meets the sea
Back home
There is no better place than home for me
cause home is where Ill find my destiny
Im going home again and I just cant wait to see
The folks that I have missed
A mothers tender kiss, so soft, so sweet
Ill hold her in my arms, like Id never let her go
My familys my home and I will tell them that I love them so
Oh I know Ive been away so very long
That I hurt you when I left and I was wrong
And I see that home is where my heart belongs
So hang on heart, cause her I come
Back home
Where all the love is that I need
Where all my family waits for me
Back home
I close my eyes and I can see
Where the river meets the sea
Back home
There is no better place than home for me
cause home is where Ill find my destiny
Back home
Where all the love is that I need
Where all my family waits for me
Back home
I close my eyes and I can see
Where the river meets the sea
Back home
There is no better place than home for me
cause home is where Ill find my destiny
Back home
