Gold Medal Blues
Please hide the newspapers-and turn off the news.
Please, nobody talk. I’ve got the gold medal blues.
No radio talk show can cure what I got.
Why couldn’t Sid hit the post with that shot?
America’s team gave it their best
We beat those Canadians on the first test.
We out skated the Swiss, steamrollered the Finns-
yet only got Silver for all of our wins.
Though we were the home squad it all seemed so wrong
The crowd in attendance was booing our song.
They dressed all in red, waved the maple leaf flag
One fan looked like Celine Dionne in drag.
Luongo, their goalie, was playing at home
While he made basic stops he did not look that strong.
The American goalie did more to impress
With grace under pressure- no hint of distress
J.P. Parise’s boy gave us some hope
with time running out it was tied like a rope.
But sudden death hockey well deserves its name
Crosby’s second chance shot quickly ended the game

Are the buttocks firmer on athletes?
Those who adorn sneakers on courts...
Or play on fields wearing cleats?
Are they tighter on women?
Or men who play soccer?
It's harder to tell on those chasing a puck
As they hockey.
What do they see when they arrive at the lockers?
Or those racing horses...
And called jockeys.
Are they really jocks?
Who gave them names like these?
Women playing tennis,
Seem to have stronger thighs.
And why aren't there cheerleaders...

Kicking a small piece of broken earthen pot,
While playing on the roadside, hop scotch.
Or dribbling a ball and throwing it at a team mate.
Screaming as I fell, skidding on the roller skates.
Playing marbles with my kid brother, ten years old
Aiming at queen of carom board with one eye closed.
Trying my hand at basketball, hockey and table tennis.
One day, a bunch of us stormed into YMCA premises.
As there was no club exclusively for girls, back then.
Sir, we said politely you have to treat us at par with men.
Please be kind enough to give us forms for membership.
You are a sportsman, so how about some sportsmanship.
Next day, after submitting our forms, we were in the hall.
Awkwardly aiming and trying to strike a billiard’s ball.
It was so good in my country back then, now I see.
We knew no fear; felt so young, joyous and carefree.
Its still not bad, as I see my daughter go through her day.
She has lots of fun, makes choices in an assertive way.
Oh, my heart cries for the women in far off Afghanistan.
Will they ever, ever, ever again see the light of dawn...
