I had wanted a tape recorder since I was tiny. I thought it was a magic thing. I never got one until just before I went to art school.

In School

in school,
when i saw you
i intuited i have found
my lost world in you
i wish i could act
to be appreciated
by you in school.

in school,
it would be too sad
to narrate the ordeal
i have been through
i wonder if its best
i had met you
in the school.

in school,
though i had not said it
there has been so many ways
that i have shown it
my actions had done
whatever i wanted to say
at school.

in school,
i never thought
being in love
could take me to madness
well, it is better than
leaving me in sadness
in the school.

in school,
when i approached you
i knew i was silly
it was because
suddenly,
i forgot who i was
in school

in school,
why do you sneer
when i am near
it really breaks me
just tell me what to do
to get a room from you
in and out of school.

in school,
sometimes though it is hard
i guess i must let go
some things i wish to have
though good things also
could be found elsewhere
as it has been in school.

I started performing at two or three on a tape recorder, one of those little flat recorders where you just push play and record.

Most of our stuff was trial and error. You live with a tape recorder, you turn it on, you play the song and you listen to it.

All the dialogue on tape, and we'd play the tape in performance. Then I thought it'd be interesting if the actor's repeated what they heard on the tape, but at a slower speed, so we'd get a web of language.

Gertrude Stein is interviewed on American poetry

and there was the knocking on the door
that we were expecting
and it was the man
that we were expecting
with the questions we were expecting
to which answers were expected
by those who expect answers
as if life were like that
which for writers it is not

yes, tea was drunk
and after tea the tape recorder set up
so that what I said
I would continue to say
somewhere else
even when I changed my mind
here and nowhere else

and he said Ms Stein
what do you think of American poetry
and we said well it's American
and it's poetry
that's as it should be
and really that's all there is to say
and the man looked disappointed
so we asked him did he read poetry
and he said poetry no I dont read poetry
but my editor does
so I said it's really about Americans
living their lives
that's what American poetry is really about
because Americans move around
and so their words move around and
words in English have lost their intensity
but American words are always on the move
and they are more intense
yes, Americans living among Americans
and talking to their neighbours
if it's not about that
it's not really American poetry at all is it
if it's not about that
then why bother writing poetry

and the man was asking about a rose
being a rose being a rose and we said
for a hundred years the rose
has not been red in poetry
but now for the first time in a hundred years
the rose is red again

and the man looked at his watch
and said thank you Ms Stein
and was switching off his tape recorder

and a month later that
was what we said
in a magazine much read
by Americans who mostly
are not poets no very few but we said it
we know that this is so
because we read it there
and we think that really
that was all there was to say
because that was all we think
is really important
about American Poetry
that the words move like Americans move
and that is exciting for a writer
and that is the important thing about
American Poetry

Factories called Schools

Before we went to school,
We had so much fun,
We did all we wanted,
Basking in the sun.

When we grew so much,
We had to go to school,
Everyone was there,
No one left behind.

When we went to school,
We were told what to do
Fun was gone in our hearts,
our soul, body, and mind.

We all became robots,
Fulfilling the school's wish,
Five more years of school,
My heart was cold as ice.

Now that we left school,
We wanted our old fun back,
Yet it would not come back,
No matter how hard we tried.

Her Last Poem

She sat beneath a shaded tree
She thought for a while
She thought about her life
For the first time
She wrote her first poem
She sat in her desk at school
She smiled a lot
Because smiles meant happy
And she wanted happy
She frowned when no one looked
She sat with her friends at lunch
She wondered what they thought
Did they think about her?
She wondered if they wondered
If her smiles were real
She sat beside the boy in school
They held hands
And he thought she was beautiful
Just a girl
And not much else
She sat on her bedroom floor
She let herself feel
And she felt like nothing
But feeling is all she wanted
And so she was nothing
She was alone
She was tired
She was afraid
And she was nothing
She sat on the bathroom floor
She pulled out the razor
She carved mor nothing on her wrist
She pretended to be ok
Because ok was all she wanted
Drip drop
Blood
Tears
No difference really
She sat beneath a shaded tree
She let go for a while
She thought about her death
For the first time
She wrote her last poem

Nostalgia-tine

A time
Not so long ago
Was a school boy
He was tender in the heart

In the very same school class
Was a young school girl
Very smart,

Locked inside his empty shyness
This school boy
Wanted to, , ,
Talk to this pretty girl
Boldly, this day,
She set her hair in sophisticated curls

And what he wanted to say, , , was
Can you,
'Come out and play'
Inside he thought
I will do this, just on another day..

In the month of February
Exchanging cards was customary

On this school girls desk
Sat a box
Skilfully decorated
And craftily created
In the colors of the season
Red, Bright and White
Wow, the boy thought
'What a glaring sight'!

A little slot cut on the top
A place to make a dropp
Secure and sealed this
Decorated box
Its job was
Safeguarding all her precious
Little cards

Breaking from his school boy shyness
Reaching inside his pocket
Where kept his
Hand painted card
Drawn upon the white paper
Is his little heart

I Know That Its Magic

Im amazed at things you, you do it all with ease
I smile while everything you do, drives me to my knees
cos I know that its magic, and I know that its magic
Yes, I know that its magic, in everything you try to do
Many times I see ahead, Ill have to make a stand
Maybe I can call on you, I know youd understand
cos I know that its magic, and I know that its magic
Yes, I know that its magic, in everything you try to do
cos I know that its magic, and I know that its magic
Yes, I know that its magic, in everything you try to do
cos I know that its magic, and I know that its magic

Strange Magic

Youre sailing softly through the sun
In a broken stone age dawn.
You fly so high.
I get a strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.
Youre walking meadows in my mind,
Making waves across my time,
Oh no, oh no.
I get a strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.
Oh, Im never gonna be the same again,
Now Ive seen the way its got to end,
Sweet dream, sweet dream.
Strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.
Its magic, its magic, its magic.
Strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic.
Strange magic strange magic
Oh, what a strange magic strange magic
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic.
Strange magic strange magic
Oh, what a strange magic strange magic
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic,
You know I got a strange magic,
Yeah, I got a strange magic,
Oo-o-o-oo, strange magic. (fade)

Magic is seen

Obsure magic is known to some
To some magic is the most incredible thing that will
ever cross by their very eyes
Others don't believe in it and say that it's nonsense
I see magic without any doubt and am eager to
know why
Anxious to know the reason behind of all of this
No clues to count back to, it naturally happens
Magic is seen in my eyes
Preposterous mysteries that I will never understand
Unusual tricks on my mind are casting me in a illusion
Charms in its magic are found curious to me
I'm interested in how to find why this bizarre thing comes
by me
Surprising, crazy, and irrational and I still love it anyway
Striking conceptions are cryptic and are specified
Magic is a beloved out of the ordinary thing that I've learned
happens in uncertain ways
