The great medley of Oregon and California emigrants, at their camps around Independence, had heard reports that several additional parties were on the point of setting out from St. Joseph's farther to the northward.

Gone To California
Goin' to california,
to live in the summer sun
the streets are made of silver
I'm like a rabbit on the run
Philadelphia freedom
well, it's not like you have heard
the city of brotherly love is full of pain and hurt
goin' to california
to find my pot of gold
corruption on every corner
husterls selling sweets
baby is home crying
while her momma's on the street
everybody's dying
have you heard the news today?
a woman in north philly is mouring
the bullet took another son away
i'm goin' to california
I'm going far, far away
I'm going to california; yes
to resurrect my soul
the sun is always shining
or at least that's what I'm told
going to california
there's a better life for me
goin' to california
I'll write and tell you what i see
goin' to california
somebody say a prayer for me

Feelin Down Farther
Tom johnston
Well, the sun is shinin
A new day is here
All the people smilin
And the sky is clear
Not an hour wasted will I share with you
Got to keep lovin, mama
No matter what I do
Ooh, ooh, ooh
I got to tell you
Feelin down farther
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther, baby
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther, baby
Feelin farther down
Jesus, hear me
When I sing out loud
The echoes of my gladness
Fall upon the crowd
I dont care for sadness
And I dont need fear
I hope they finally realize
That the feelin is near
Ooh, ooh, ooh
I got to tell you
Feelin down farther
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther, baby
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther, baby
Feelin farther down
Givin and receivin
Are all I know
Some of you will find it
And youll probbly let it show
Only one thing that I know to be true
Every day is different, mama
And so are you
Ooh, ooh, ooh
I got to tell you
Feelin down farther
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther, baby
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther
Feelin farther down
Feelin down farther, baby

Crazy Thoughts
Maybe I've gone crazy
Looking for too many words,
Maybe I've taken leave of my senses
Trying to speak, and be heard -
So many things I want to say
All in hopes to find
What I don't understand
About all the life that lives and moves in my mind -
The words all come out wrong
While what I'm truly searching for,
Laughs and dances like a madman
Out of my own hearts back door -
It's the damndest thing
Like running down an empty desert highway,
Chasing the vanishing point
That's always going farther and farther away -
Does that rainbow's beautiful end really reside
In the mountain paradise of the perfect Word;
Will I ever arrive at that elusive point
Where each beautiful thought I could never quite express
Shall finally be exquisitely said, and wholly heard?
To arrive is my crazy goal.
With great love to be there;
To finally and fully hear, and be heard,
To discover my own thoughts do matter,
And God really does care.
Crazy, indeed.

California
I was converted to the other side
From the day I'd gotten there
I met a girl who took me on a ride
I was young I had no cares
When I moved to California
California
She played me records I had never heard
While we toked on purple hairs
Who, Zeppelin, Beatles
Kiss, The Rolling Stones
While we played guitars in air
When I moved to California
California
California
California love!
Venice Beach and P.O.P.
Station 26 was free
Jeff Ho and Horizons west
Dogtown Skates they were the best
Hang Ten, O.P. were the brands
Don't forget the two-tone Vans
I miss the Apple and my schoolyard boys
Nothing ever will compare
But now I skateboard
With my surfer girl
And we really are a pair
When I moved to California
California

California love!

California
Blonde haired baby standing by the road
A pistol in her hand and talking on the phone
Said go to california (go to california)
Go to california (go to california)
Sidewalk gazing diamonds in the sky
Silent movie gods are flashing in your eye
Said go to california (go to california)
Go to california (go to california)
Get up get out
Get inside the outside
Get up get out get in
Get up get out
Get inside the outside
Get up get out get in
Lon chaney calling
Spelling out your name
Where everybody's different
But they're all the same
Yeah go to california (go to california)
Go to california (go to california)
You are perfect you are insane
We love to watch you break from the pain
Yeah go to california (go to california)

Bump and grind
Bump and grind
Bump and grind
Bump and grind
Hit the lights and
Strip down on the floor
Everybody hates you
But they want some more

California
I remember I was in the tanning salon
When I heard that river phoenix was gone
They say that only the good die young
But that aint true where I come from
California...california
It took a lot for me to say
I want to walk away, la
From the sharks and the chardonnay
In california...california
4 in the morning we were in our beds
The swaying palm trees above our heads
Woke up to a primal rumbling sound
When the northridge quake ripped open the
Ground
California...california
It took a lot for me to say
I want to walk away la
From the sharks and the chardonnay
In california... in california
Golden state, Im back in the golden state
Golden state of mind
Golden state, Im back in the golden state
Golden state of mind
It took a lot for me to say
I want to walk away la
From the sharks and the chardonnay
In california... in california
Walk, walk away
I remember I was in the tanning salon
When I heard that river phoenix was gone...

California Girls
Well east coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when Im down there
The mid-west farmers daughters really make you feel alright
And the northern girls with the way they kiss
They keep their boyfriends warm at night
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california girls
The west coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a french bikini on hawaii island
Dolls by a palm tree in the sand
I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldnt wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california girls
I wish they all could be california
(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)
I wish they all could be california
(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)
I wish they all could be california
(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)
I wish they all could be california
(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)

Oregon
Oregon is bad
Stop it if you can
Here it comes
Here it comes
Now its after you
Flee to someplace new
Run away
Run away
From the penthouse to the prison
To the humble piedterre
Are they taking up the cry
In the brothel
In the castle
On the crowded boulevard
Do they sing the dreadful words
Oregon is bad
Stop it if you can
Here it comes
Here it comes
Oregon is bad
Stop it if you can
Run away
Run away

Independence Day
Well papa go to bed now its getting late
Nothing we can say is gonna change anything now
Ill be leaving in the morning from st. marys gate
We wouldnt change this thing even if we could somehow
'cause the darkness of this house has got the best of us
Theres a darkness in this town thats got us too
But they cant touch me now and you cant touch me now
They aint gonna do to me what I watched them do to you
So say goodbye its independence day
Its independence day all down the line
Just say goodbye its independence day
Its independence day this time
Now I dont know what it always was with us
We chose the words and yeah we drew the lines
There was just no way this house could hold the two of us
I guess that we were just too much of the same kind
Well say goodbye its independence day
All boys must run away come independence day
So say goodbye its independence day
All men must make their way come independence day
Now the rooms are all empty down at frankies joint
And the highway shes deserted down to breakers point
Theres a lot of people leaving town now
Leaving their friends their homes
At night they walk that dark and dusty highway all alone
Well papa go to bed now its getting late
Nothing we can say can change anything now
Because theres just different people coming down here now
And they see things in different ways
And soon everything weve known will just be swept away
So say goodbye its independence day
Papa now I know the things you wanted that you could not say
But wont you just say goodbye its independence day
I swear I never meant to take those things away

A Promise To California
A PROMISE to California,
Also to the great Pastoral Plains, and for Oregon:
Sojourning east a while longer, soon I travel toward you, to remain,
to teach robust American love;
For I know very well that I and robust love belong among you, inland,
and along the Western Sea;
For These States tend inland, and toward the Western Sea--and I will
also.

California Dreamin'
All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray
I've been for a walk on a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A.
California dreamin' on such a winter's day
Stopped in to a church I passed along the way
Well I got down on my knees and I pretend to pray
You know the preacher liked the cold
He knows I'm gonna stay
California dreamin' on such a winter's day
California dreamin' on such a winter's...
California dreamin' on such a winter's...
California dreamin' on such a winter's day...
All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray
I've been for a walk on a winter's day
If I didn't tell her I could leave today
California dreamin' on such a winter's day
California dreamin' on such a winter's...
California dreamin' on such a winter's...
California dreamin' on such a winter's day...
On such a winter's day...
California dreamin' on such a winter's...
California dreamin' on such a winter's...
California dreamin' on such a winter's day...
California dreamin' on such a winter's day...

Almost Independence Day *
I can hear them calling way from Oregon
I can hear them calling way from Oregon
And it's almost Independence Day
Me and my lady, we go steppin' (we go steppin')
We go steppin' way out on China town
All to buy some Hong Kong silver
And the wadin' rushing river (we go steppin')
We go out on the, out on the town tonight
I can hear the fireworks
I can hear the fireworks
I can hear the fireworks
Up and down the, up and down the San Francisco bay
Up and down the, up and down the San Francisco bay
I can hear them echoing
I can hear, I can hear them echoing
Up and down the, up and down the San Francisco bay
I can see the boats in the harbor (way across the harbor)
Lights shining out (lights shining out)
And a cool, cool night
And a cool, cool night across the harbor
I can hear the fireworks
I can hear the people, people shouting out
I can hear the people shouting out (up and down the line)
And it's almost Independence Day
I can see the lights way out in the harbor
And the cool, and the cool, and the cool night
And the cool, and the cool, and the cool night breeze
And I feel the cool night breeze
And I feel, feel, feel the cool night breeze
And the boats go by
And it's almost Independence Day
And it's almost, and it's almost Independence Day
Way up and down the line
Way up and down the line...

California Blue
Roy orbison
Working all day and the sun dont shine
Trying to get by and Im just killing time
I feel the rain fall the whole night through
Far away from you california blue
California blue dreaming all alone
Nothing else to do california blue
Everyday I pray Ill be on my way
Saving love for you california blue
One sunny day, Ill get back again
Somehow, someway but I dont know when
California blue california blue
Living my life with you on my mind
Thinking of things that I left far behind
Its been so long doing all I can do
To get back to you california blue
California blue dreaming all alone
Nothing else to do california blue
Everyday I pray Ill be on my way
Saving love for you california blue
One sunny day Ill get back again
Somehow, someway but I dont know when

California Revisited
Heaven may be an answer
If you're lookin' for eden in the sky
On your waters i see a strange reflection
Rumor has it i'll see you when i die
Everyone i meet is from california
There's dancin' in the streets in california
In california you watch the shadow dancer
Floating gently, gently on the sea
In california you're such a strange romancer
Come and see me when the world has set you free
Everyone i meet is from california
There's dancin' in the streets in california
Everyone i meet is from california
There's dancin' in the streets in california
