Doctor's Day 2012

Most Doctors…
Try their best to heal;
Do not try to steal;
Use their ken to deal
With patient's problems and do feel!

All Doctors…
Are just humans too;
Try to be humane and do
Their duty with ethics due,
Upgrading knowledge new.

A few Doctors…
May make errors great;
May fleece patients poor;
May not perform to their best,
And earn a bad name for the rest!

Doctors…
Are a noble lot and lucky slot,
Whose toil is praised but soon forgot;
Sacrifice their life-times but cannot
Find time to check own health from rot!

Wish Doctors all, ‘A Happy Doctors Day! '
May they labour, come what may;
For their kind work, may God repay
With heaven, and bless them His way!

My Visits to a Dental College Hospital

“ You are a mental…”,
my friends say,
when I go to a Self-financed Dental College,
to clean my teeth,
and say bye to the tooth
that has some rot.
“They are fools”,
My mind would murmur
For they waste money
Paying to a private clinic
To dlo such things quicker.
Learners in a college,
Wait at the gate, restless,
To catch a patient.
When on eis caught,
They guide him to anice seat
And do; cleaning for two hours,
Clearing their doubts with the seniors.
How much blood and
Broken pieces of steeth we belch out
Into the bowl nearby.!

“ You’re a miser”,
My friends comments, but I don’t care.
When the bad breath of sputum,
From the student doctors breeze over me,
I keep cool on the cushion,
for I am there to salt away some money.

The girl-students pull out tooth with ease
but the boys struggle
with all their might and sweat,
making me feel proud
that my teeth have strong roots.
Their fight goes at times unruly
and so much blood will be oozing out.
“ Don’t worry. It just needs one or two stitches”, they say.
“ You carry on the postmortem”,
I would say with a slight smile.
They’d be shocked first
but smiling a little later.

Before they consult the doctors
to prescribe tablets,
those dental experts would be out.
But the budding doctors will not let me down.
They consult among themselves
and scribble something to
save me from ensuing fever.
If I gulp some water now,
it gushes out of my nostrils.
Yet I have so much love
for the young nice scholars.
After all they break the teeth at times
and not our hearts with looks of anger.

Sonnet: Advice to Doctors

No patient’s mine; no patient remains yours;
The patient comes and goes from Doc to Doc;
If he improves, we simply then rejoice,
Though God’s the key to the diagnostic-lock!

All patients ail and expect some relief;
A doctor’s duty is to help him out;
All patients speak the truth; Time is the thief;
To use his knowledge best, all Doctors ought.

Fleece not the poor; cheat not the ones who’re sick;
God is the Healer prime; He uses us;
Off not life’s candle-flame with intact wick;
The Doctor shirking work invites God’s curse!

Lose not Ethics; lose not your morals, Doc!
Like patients, Doctors are part of God’s flock.

The Patient

Think of the patient;
Hear his cry;
With pain and suff’ring,
Eyes go dry.

Think of his poor state
And his mind;
His diseased body,
Doctors find.

Think of the patient
His travail;
Him from agony;
None can bail.

Think of the disease
Without cure;
Man lives for God’s sake:
And endure.

Think of his doomed fate;
None can change;
If drugs still work ’tis
From God’s range.

Think of the patient,
His family;
Can you give succor?
For what fee?

Patient, Thou speak’st only the truth

The truth, he speaks, the patient, sick when he's,
'Tis rare for him to tell a pack of lies;
If not, the Diagnosis will go amiss,
The patient knows all this if he is wise.

How can the Doctor know the malady,
Without the patient telling his Symptom?
Diagnosis must precede the Remedy,
A commodity, Health's bought but seldom.

0 patient, Thou better speak truth alone!
The Doctor is no real Demi-God;
Help him help thee, 'fore thy family shall moan;
If thou art ill, Doctor is next to God.
Diseases can dupe the best of Doctors,
A bad history can turn into thine hearse.

Competition makes things come out right. Well, what does that mean in health care? More hospitals so they compete with each other. More doctors compete with each other. More pharmaceutical companies. We set up war. Wait a minute, let's talk about the patient. The patient doesn't need a war.

A patient going to a doctor for his first visit was asked, "And whom did you consult before coming to me?"
"Only the village druggist," was the answer.
"And what sort of foolish advice did that numbskull give you?" asked the doctor, his tone and manner denoting his contempt for the advice of the layman.
"Oh," replied his patient, with no malice aforethought, "he told me to come and see you."

Still Smoking a Rant

A cigarette will soothe away
the stress and troubles of the day.
That’s what the doctors used to say.
When I was young

When feel down and skies are grey
a smoke will drive the blues away.
That’s what the doctors used to say.
When I was young.

A smoke will help you work and play
and do no harm in any way
That’s what the doctors used to say.
When I was young.

New fads and fancies come along.
Without admitting they were wrong.
The doctors sing a different song.
Now I am old.

If they were wrong why should we
believe their latest theory.
The doctors sing a different song.
Now I am old.

Smokers die younger so they say
younger than who I ask today.
The doctors sing a different song.
Now I am old.

I have smoked since I was ten,
part of my daily regimen.
The doctors sing a different song.
Now I am old.

Presumably I should be dead.
If I believed the lies we’re fed
The doctors sing a different song.
Now I am old.

The choice is yours to quit or smoke.
Myself I treat it as a joke.
The song the doctors sing today.
I am quite old

Both smokers and non smokers die
which I accept I don’t ask why
Despite the song the doctors sing.
I’m still smoking.

Country Doctors

The quiet country doctors
Of many a country town,
Whose lives are spent to service bent,
With scant hope of renown
Those sturdy country doctors,
That walk the healer's way,
At beck and call of one and all
That pain be smoothed away.

Those patient country doctors,
That journey day and night
By country roads to far abodes
To ease some sufferer's plight;
Thro' fire and flood and tempest
They make their pilgrimage
To bring release and healing peace,
The comforters of age.

Those modern country doctors,
They do not advertise;
Surcease they bring for suffering
And hope to pain-filled eyes.
These be their ends to be man's friends,
And so they shape and plan,
Divorced from greed to serve man's need,
And give their lives to man.

Those quiet country doctors,
Unsung, unknown to fame,
Refusing none what may be done
In skilful healing's name
Philosophers, friends, mentors,
Thro' pain and death and birth,
And who shall say that such as they
Are not salt of the earth?

Doctor's Day In India

Though once a year comes Doctor's Day,
Let us celebrate it;
‘A noble profession', all say;
Accolades, let's befit.

All doctors must improve health-care
Of world's sick/suffering souls;
Let doctors toil for sick-welfare,
Assuming varied roles.

The world needs better doctors more -
A dedicated lot;
They form the health-providers core -
A sacrificing slot!

May doctors work most selflessly;
May patients benefit;
May doctors serve them faultlessly,
And heal all, bit by bit!
