The one who hasn't strength to pound yams pretends to drive away flies from the yams.

What is in the yams that a knife doesn't know.
A farmer does not boast that he has had a good harvest until his stock of yams lasts till the following harvest season.
Youre My Meat
Outside in and inside out youre my meat
Fat and forty but lordy youre my meat
From your feet to your head you knock me dead, youre my meat
I got you covered but baby, youre my meat
In the days of old when knights were bold
They were pious and modest Im told
Cant you see that couldnt be me
Id have to talk about your yams and your big fat hams
It excites me so because I know youre my meat
Fat and forty but lordy youre my meat
In the days of old when knights were bold
They were pious and modest Im told
Cant you see that couldnt be me
Id have to talk about your yams and your big fat hams
It excites me so because I know youre my meat
Fat and forty but lordy youre my meat
Fat and forty but lordy lordy . . . youre my meat

City Of Angels
Shafting sunbeams. misty eddies,
towering, sculpted, shining chedis,
thundering traffic, six lane highways,
swampy, shabby, back-street by-ways,
mangoes, sticky rice, dom yams,
squeezed into the Mother of all Traffic Jams…..

5. None Meat Eater
Deep in the jungle
A young lion roars
Out hunting for lunch
With fresh sharpened claws
His brothers and sisters
Were stalking a deer
It ran away quickly
When he came to near
The skills that he needed
For stalking and stealth
Would need to be found
To be good for his health
He seems somewhat clumsy
Although he was willing
To eat anything
If it didn’t need killing
So he first ate a mango
Then yams he was trying
And became the world’s first
Vegetarian lion

Meeting Dad Again
Thirty years later, Dad came back
and we met for Ham and Yams at Toffenetti's.
Pouring his tea, he told me he had
to restore power once
at a newspaper warehouse
and the storm broke again
and the lightning cracked his ladder.
He spent the whole day, he said,
sitting in that dark warehouse,
waiting for the lightning to stop
and for the truck to bring a new ladder.
He had a great time, he said,
sitting next to a flickering lantern
and reading for hours the Sunday comics
printed and stacked
six weeks in advance.

Cutie Pie
CUTIE PIE
Cup cakes and cotton candy
Sugar plums and honey buns
Sweet potatoes and candy yams
taste so good,
on my tongue
The scent of sweet cinnamon sprinkles on an apple crumb pie
cuts through my senses
bringing tears to my eyes.
Just like when I image your face, sweet father of mine.
It creates a space in my heart
filled with the sweet cherished love you have for me.
I’ve never wanted to be nothing more than you sweet baby
so blessed that you’re all mine and I forever your little lady.
Let me forever be that apple in your eye
To have and to hold….wearing your love draped around me like a coat.
It will forever keep my heart safe and warm from the cold.
There’s nothing more precious than a daughters love for her daddy.
You’re the first to call me a cutie pie…which I never knew I was cute until you.
So whenever I look at my imagine in the mirror I get a sweet tooth.
When I look in the mirror I see you.
My brown cinnamon skin is like a pastry treat.
Cup cakes and cotton candy
Sugar plums and honey buns
Sweet potatoes and candy yams
taste so good,
to have them
I’d break a limb
The scent of sweet cinnamon sprinkles on an apple crumb pie.
cuts through my senses
bringing tears to my eyes.
I shall forever and always be your cutie pie.

Thanksgiving
The people in our country have set aside a day
to celebrate with family, a day on which they pray
that giving thanks for all they have will make them think again
that many are not as fortunate and then they'll say Amen.
The table set before them will whet their appetite.
The turkey and the dressing and yams will bring delight.
The cornbread and the cranberries are ready for the eating.
The adults and the children once again are meeting.
When the dinner's over, the best is yet to come.
The pumpkin pies with whipped cream and then the men succumb
to watch a football game or two until they fall asleep.
And when the dishes all are done with leftovers in a heap,
Mom will hand them out to all so later they'll ingest
the tasty morsels for a second time.
Thanksgiving is the best! !
Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers.

Sweet emotion
The taste of raspberry on her lips
Green apple candy
And fruit with strawberry dips
Aroma of lavender after a shower
Basil on pizza
Put there just to tease ya
Licorice sticks with sweet vanilla swirls
A beautiful girl with long golden curls
Cave into the emotion
A brand new puppy with big brown eyes
His aroma is lovely and pungent
I think I'll call him cinnamon
The smell of cloves on a freshly baked ham
And the taste of sweet candied yams
Make me drool like cinnamon
And the fool that I am.

The cobweb pretends to catch dew-drops and catches flies.

Grateful for Traditions
Thick the gravy made did sit.
With turkey giblets tempting,
The licking of awaiting lips.
Dressing prepared,
Next to a glazed honeyed ham.
With collard greens smelling good,
As the potato salad nestled close
To chit'lins and delicious candied yams.
Pumpkin, apple and sweet potato pies...
Filled the air with anticipation,
As the black-eyed peas and rice
Were passed by!
Heads are bowed in prayer...
Giving thanks for blessings,
And grateful for traditions!
Feeding a heritage nurtured well,
When families gather...
For these feasting eating missions!
'Grandma...
Will you tell grandpa to stop talking,
And pass the fried chicken...please! '

If You Want to Keep Your Peace Secured
I've been in one spot for twenty one years.
Mended from several heartbreaks.
And dried my own tears.
I know I've lost my mind...
At least a few times or more.
And the few people I knew had little to say.
Or bothered to knock on my opened door.
And today! TODAY...I get visitors.
Who claim to be my friends.
But I also know this much too well...
Folks only come around,
When they are near a dead end...
With no money to spend!
So I sat listening to 'them' ask...
'How have you been? '
And when I said I was doing great...
I was given from them big fake grins!
And I offered to them my hand and said...
'I'm so glad ya'll came by!
I need a loaf of bread.'
They quickly got up and left!
And that is how I have managed,
To keep my peace of mind.
Especially in a place...
Like this hometown of mine!
I can't wait for that fresh gossip,
To go around a few times!
And...
If you,
Any of you
Want to keep your peace secured...
Tell folks you ain't got a dime!
That will do it!
Unless...
You just happen to be cooking,
Collard greens with fried chicken wings.
Potato salad and yams,
WITH ice tea?
Unexpectedly?
You 'then' have folks,
You can't get rid of fast enough!

I Don't Wanna Know
How can you treat me so badly?
I gave my heart to you gladly
Don't try to explain
You'll drive me insane
If you have to go
Then go
I want no more of your lyin'
I don't wanna know
Just go
Hasn't there been enough cryin'
Don't tell me why
I
Don't wanna know
Don't tell me how you'll love me forever
Don't say that someday we'll be together
Stop tryin' to be kind
You were never really mind
And every word you say
Just drives me out of my mind
If you have to go
Then go
I want no more of your lyin'
I don't wanna know
Just go
Hasn't there been enough cryin'
Don't tell me why
I
Don't wanna know
How could I be so blind
I thought we were doin' fine
You never said a word
Never gave me a sign
If you have to go
Then go
I want no more of your lyin'
I don't wanna know
Just go
Hasn't there been enough cryin'
Don't tell me why
I
Don't wanna know

Nature Of A Man
AND ALL MY GIRLS SAY
WHAT!
(LAUGHTER)
TIE ME UP, TIE ME UP
OH, OH BABY
OH YEAH
LAST NIGHT I HAD A DREAM
AND I COULDN'T SLEEP
WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME
THINKIN' 'BOUT THE FIGHT WE HAD
AND IT MAKES ME MAD
THAT I'D GO OFF LIKE THAT
WISH I COULD TAKE IT BACK
SO BABY I APOLOGIZE, IT WASN'T RIGHT
IS THERE A COMPRISE THAT WE COULD FIND
CAUSE I BE THINKIN' YOU'RE INSENSITIVE
BUT IT'S YOUR LANGUAGE
IT'S JUST DIFFERENT FROM MINE
CHROUS
UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF A MAN
AND REALIZE THAT WE'RE JUST DIFFERENT
I UNDERSTAND THAT IF I BE ME AND YOU BE YOU
WE KNOW LOVE WILL PULL US THROUGH
UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF A MAN
I UNDERSTAND
I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU
BABY THROUGH AND THROUGH
I'LL BE YOUR CANDIED YAMS
YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU BOO
I'M NOT TRYIN' TO BE THE MAN
NAH, AIN'T GOT THAT KIND OF NERVE
AIN'T TRYIN' TO ROLE REVERSE
I KNOW I WEAR THE PURSE
TO ME IT'S NOT ABOUT CONTROL
THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANT
ITS YOUR LOVE I WANT
AND FROM YOU I WANT
ALL THE LITTLE CHARACTER FLAWS
IT'S ONE OF NATURE'S LAWS
FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME
CHROUS
YOU'RE THE CREAMY PART
OF MY CHOCOLATE STAR
THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE
YOU STOLE MY HEART
THE FRAGRANCE OF A MELODY
I CAN'T DESCRIBE WHAT YOU ARE FOR ME
MY BABY, MY BABY
YOU DO THAT THING FOR ME
CHROUS

Drive-in
Ooo wah
Ooo wah
Everytime I have a date theres only one place to go
Thats to the drive in
Its such a groovy place to talk and maybe watch a show
Down at the drive in
Forget about the plot, itll do very well
But make sure you see enough so youre prepared to tell
About the drive in
(ooo wah)
I love the drive in
(we love the drive in, we love the drive in)
If the windows get fogged youll have to take a breath
(oooooooo waah oooo)
Down at the drive in
(wah wah ooooooo)
Or the cat dressed in white will scare you both to death
Down at the drive in
A big buttered popcorn and an extra large coke
A few chili dogs and man Im goin broke
Down at the drive in
(ooo wah)
Yeah at the drive in
(we love the drive in, we love the drive in)
Dont sneak your buddies in the trunk cause they might get caught
By the drive in
(wah wah wah ooooooo)
And theyd look kinda stupid gettin chased through the lot
(wah ooooooo)
Around the drive in
If you say you watch the movie youre a couple o liars
And remember only you can prevent forest fires
Down at the drive in
(ooo wah)
I love the drive in
(we love the drive in, we love the drive in)
Down at the drive in
(ooo wah)
I love the drive in
(we love the drive in, we love the drive in)
Down at the drive in
(ooo wah)
I love the drive in
(we love the drive in, we love the drive in)

Your Time Hasn't Come Yet Baby
(words & music by hirschhorn - kascho)
Your time hasn't come yet baby
You got a lot of dreams to go
Your time hasn't come yet baby
But when it does your heart will know
You're gonna be a beautiful woman
Because you're such a beautiful child
And when you start to bloom
Just like a rose in june
I bet the schoolboys all go wild, but right now
Your time hasn't come yet baby
You got a few dreams to go
Your time hasn't come yet baby
When it does your heart will know
Your life's still a lollipop heaven
Your teddy bear's at the foot of your bed
The little boy next door who only makes you sore
Is gonna some day turn your head but right now
Your time hasn't come yet baby
You got a few dreams to go
Your time hasn't come yet baby
When it does your heart will know
You're gonna grow over night into a lady
With a devastatingly smile ???
And then a lucky guy will see you
And wanna walk you down the aisle, but meanwhile
Your time hasn't come yet baby
You got a few dreams to go
Your time hasn't come yet baby
When it does your heart will know
When it does your heart will know
When it does your heart will know

When We Go To The Mountains
when we go to the mountains
we always feel the ease of our pains
the lessening of our burdens
the loosening of the ties
that bind our necks
and choke our throats
we shall be at the foot
of the hills and feel the rivers running under our feet
we feel we do not need
the buffers of slippers
our skins missing the touch of freshness
the massaging of the stones
the tickling of our nerves
the green grasses spreading on the plains
the cows grazing
the eagles soaring high above us
the goats smelling us like aliens
the water buffaloes sniffing
our city sweats
the natives dance an ethnic number
some roasted pigs
and yams and brown rice
we speak of the wilderness
the silence and the peace
and the mountains are still
listening to our stories: lost souls, destroyed habitats,
the rape of nature
the murder of innocence
the robbery of everything that used to be beautiful
pure and simple

Promiscuity
too much too much promiscuity
can drive to insanity
say too much too much insanity
can drive to criminality
say oohooh set me free
oohooh let me be
too much too much promiscuity
can drive to calamity
too much too much hypocrisy
can drive to academy
too much too much morality
can drive to criminality
say oohooh set me free
oohooh let me be
too much too much hypocrisy
can drive to calamity
oohooh set me free
oohooh let me be...
too much too much wiliwili
can drive to big family
too much too much morality
can drive to the flies and bee

Expecting to be able to get rid of the competitive drive, first of all, flies in the face of human nature - and little girls certainly have this drive, as much as little boys do, or at least the little girls I have observed in my immediate family have it.

When She Did Not Like It Anymore
it is easy
she pretends the leaves are all dead
in the middle of spring
when he comes
she did not like it anymore
it is easy
she pretends there are no more flowers
that it is time for mourning
when he comes
she is dressed in black and
silence
her lace around her lips
veiled
and stony.
