Sad Promises That You Said
i thought i felt your arms cup around me
but it was just the soft embrace
of my favorite stuffed animal

Promises
Promises are comfort to a fool.
And I'm that fool.
In our many years of existence we have all had the leading role of being that fool.
Onto promises.......
I have numerous Oscar's for I know I play that role oh so well.
I wondered why do I fall victim to this.
The purpose of a promise was never to break it
BUT.....
If it is broken it becomes a lie.
I wondered why do I fall victim to promises.
It is maybe because I'm a Promise Keeper.
I am an addict for promises.
I could never stay away from it.
Never stop believe in it.
A promise is equivalent to 'say what you mean' and 'mean what you say'.
So when a promise is made to me it is align with the saying,
'It's like taking candy from a baby'.
Not naive for I know never to believe in Promises.
Optimistic, maybe.
I always believe in promises.
WHY? ?
Because when I make them I do my best to keep them no matter the circumstances.
Promises are my Opium.
But I must say most of the promises made to me were kept.
But as for now, , , I'm getting the bad side effects.

Scholar's Life
Mark what ills the scholar’s life assail,
toil, envy want, the garret and the jail,
and others Dr. Johnson has omitted,
like friends who think he ought to be committed
by men with licenses and long white coats
who do not care for all the things he quotes,
and patrons who have never gone to college,
who hope that words he uses to acknowledge
their help will make them so respectable
that they to higher office are electable,
and scholars who search carefully his writings
for their own names in small print in the citings
of footnotes, endnotes, all the apparatus
which basically for them is all that matters,
protected by their status and their tenure,
manure some pile on, some pile on womenure.
To toil and envy, garret and the jail,
add steps some make to make their rivals fail.
These are some ills befalling scholars’ lives;
survivors are the ones with lovely wives.
Frank Kermode reviews several books on Dr. Johnson in the NYR, June 22,2006:
When Johnson’s poem “The Vanity of Human Wishes” was first published in 1749, it contained this couplet:
…mark what ills the scholar’s life assail,

I know she lies
She promises, she smiles, she beguiles,
but I know she lies, and through her smiles a child hides.
She says she'll be there for me, care for me,
but when I call, she's never there.
Sometimes she telephones and I gush.
I smile even though I'm on my own.
Well, life is so full for her, you see,
she hasn't time to spare for me.
Then came the change, work found me.
I became sought after, head hunted!
I worked long hours, socialised, danced.

This is a world full of promises and dreams
