Our Thatched House

Our thatched house perched where the sea meets,
Our love mends as the sea melts and scalds the heated skin.
Dew gathers clarity, then it thaws, like the sea of tranquillity,
Cliffs are our sanctuary, melting the rocks into the sea.

Waves wield as pines hurt, sea waves smother the rain,
Our thatched house is delighted in its Way,
The path of discovery and enlightenment,
Tossed boats work with anchors here, chained to the sea and land.

Palaces of Glass

‘I don’t love you anymore! ’
Then she turned to face the door,
As the well-spring of emotion burst at last;
For the truth will not be hidden
From the moment that it’s bidden
Though it shatters all the palaces of glass.

All the palaces of glass
That we toil to build, alas,
Shatter surely at the first bleak winter’s chill;
Along corridors and towers
By the eaves, and in the bowers
Icy winds and bitter mists will take their fill.

‘I have loved you now since when,
And will love, until again
You can find it in your heart to think of me.’
Then I looked, and she was gone
With a winter coming on,
The like of which I thought I’d never see.

Now the night is like a pall
Holding heaven in its thrall,
And the ice has slowed the blood within the vein;
All my palaces are gone
Only memories linger on,
And a love that I could only feel as pain!

Anxieties Of A Widow

May stretched its legs into the grave.
Thunder heralds the rains.
Hut on the bank of Kanoli canal
Is not re-thatched this year.
Her infant’s illness made the doctor gay
With all the wages she had kept.
Summer takes the last breath,
But the coconut leaf thatched roof
Is not re-thatched this year.

As the widow stands on the threshold,
The rain clouds gather over her sky
And the wind scatters terror in her corridor.
Will the tattered roof be flown away?
Will the rain drops make pores
On the roof of her life?
Where will her child crawl and smile?
Question waves are thus getting high;
Her canoe is ready to be tossed.

The Sunset stopped on Cottages

950

The Sunset stopped on Cottages
Where Sunset hence must be
For treason not of His, but Life's,
Gone Westerly, Today—

The Sunset stopped on Cottages
Where Morning just begun—
What difference, after all, Thou mak'st
Thou supercilious Sun?

House Or Window Flies

These little window dwellers, in cottages and halls, were always
entertaining to me; after dancing in the window all day from sunrise
to sunset they would sip of the tea, drink of the beer, and eat of the
sugar, and be welcome all summer long. They look like things of mind
or fairies, and seem pleased or dull as the weather permits. In many
clean cottages and genteel houses, they are allowed every liberty to
creep, fly, or do as they like; and seldom or ever do wrong. In fact
they are the small or dwarfish portion of our own family, and so many
fairy familiars that we know and treat as one of ourselves.

Ivory Palaces

The sender,
Of honourable men and women;
Affections,
For the ivory palaces are now here to stay;
And like the glad tidings of your love around,
For the desire of your heart is around you.
Blender, sender, vender, tender, fender, bender, gender!
Of honourable men and women;
For the ivory palaces are now here to stay.

Sunday Cycle Rides

Quite often, on a Sunday morning,
Dad and I would take a cycle ride.
Up the steep hills, we would struggle,
But, down them, we would glide.

We’d cycle to villages like Monxton,
Abbott’s Ann and St Mary Bourne.
We’d pass fields of lowing cattle,
As well as fields of golden corn.

Once, as we were passing some sheep,
I gently applied my brakes and stopped.
I stood watching the cute little lambs,
As they leapt, and jumped, and hopped.

We would cycle along the back roads,
And whiz along winding, country lanes.
I felt happy enough when the sun was out,
But not so much so, when it began to rain.

Along the roads, we’d pass babbling brooks,
And horses with rhythmic clip-clopping hooves.
We’d pass village greens with duck ponds,
And pretty little cottages with thatched roofs.

But our cycle rides abruptly came to an end,
When, one day, my Dad suddenly died.
Nowadays, I don’t even own a bicycle,
But I really miss our Sunday cycle rides.

Stone Cottages

You built your stone cottages
Without any windows,
No light for your memories
No doors for your soul;
You’ve long kept your pillages
Deep-dug in foundations
Your meadows and villages
Too far from your home.

The shadows of verities
Loom large on verandahs
To strut at the terraces,
Assault your grim walls;
But all of your sureties
Are locked in your cottages
And all your serenity
In dark, airless halls.

Your lines cross your messages
In treks round old workings,
Your mind lines the precipice
That quickens your pride,
Your darkness is born of
Young dreams and old wreckages,
Short schemes and long yearnings
You’ve always denied.

What Every Woman Lives For

(words & music by pomus - shuman)
She may say she needs fancy bangles and beads
Thats part of a womans plan
But what every woman lives for
What every woman lives for
Is to give her love to a man
Wise men have known women cant live alone
So a woman should understand
That what every woman lives for
What every woman lives for
Is to give her love to a man
He may not be the kind you find in picture books
A real life hero with dashing handsome looks
He may not be the guy that youve been dreaming of
But that wont stop you from giving him your love
So dear, cant you see that it was meant to be
Its part, part of our destiny
cause what every woman lives for
What every woman lives for
Is to give her love to a man
And I hope that man is me

For Once In Our Lives

Since this morning Ive been thinking how
Things have changed between the two of us
Weve been falling through the here and now
Its time for us to reinvest our trust
Cant you see for once in our lives
Now our love has finally come to ground
This flame we have is burning so bright
Burning for ever, now were back together
Since this morning Ive been asking why
Why we let this sweet love slip away
When we knew love, was for you and i
The reason we could face the darkest days
Cant we see for once in our lives
All the things we wanted have appeared
Now that we have love realised
Realised forever
For once in our lives theres no turning back
No running away and no covering our tracks
For once in our lives theres no one to blame
No broken hearts cause weve found love again
For once, for once in our lives
Since this morning Ive been so relieved
Theres no more pressure from within
I had this sense that you would get to see
There was no lasting love in him
For once in our lives theres no turning back
Maybe we cant believe, how things can be so wrong
Maybe its time that we learn
To reach out for the feeling of love
For once in our lives theres no turning back

The House Where Love Lives

A squeaky gate a welcome lock a big shaggy dog that lives out back
And some might even call it a shack but this is the house where love lives
The paint is peelin' off of the cells the mailbox is full of bills
And it's no mansion on the hill but this is the house where love lives
There's a little boy who looks just you with freckles on his nose and eyes of blue
A little girl almost two and everybody says she looks just like you
So thank you dear for loving me though I know rich we'll never be
But that doesn't matter to you and me cause we live in the house where love lives
[ steel ]
So thank you dear for loving me though I know rich we'll never be
But that doesn't matter to you and me cause we live in the house where love lives
We live in the house where love lives

Demolition

(sung by flash and his cronies in their den)
I spy with my little eye
Anything here that I can buy.
I see a little thatched cottage
Looking so neat
With compulsory purchase we can buy it up cheap.
Then well pull up the floor boards,
Knock down the walls,
Rock the foundations,
Until the house falls.
Like a pack of cards,
Crashing to the ground.
Then well build a row
Of identical boxes
And sell them all off at treble the profits.
Demolition.
The deeds are in my pocket,
Ive got a contract in my hand.
An opportunity for luxury living.
Ill arrange the mortgage
To be repaid a hundred percent.
I cant wait around so make your decision.
Well buy up all the cottages
And every house and every street,
Until weve got everything we need.
Every town in the vicinity,
Every farm and village green.
Were gonna buy up everything,
Then its demolition.
Demolition. demolition.
Two up, two down,
It hasnt got a garden,
But its got a lovely patio.
Stainless steel kitchen sink,
Gas fired central heating,
Whaaa -- specifically designed for modern-day living,
Nothings permanent and nothing lasts,
Weve sold all the houses so put em up fast.
Were gonna buy up this town
And pull it all down.
How I love to hear the demolition sound
Of concrete crashing to the ground.
Demolition.
Its time to make some money,
Its time to get rich quick.
Its the wonderful world of capitalism.
Ive got to make a profit,
Ive got to satisfy my greed,
Its my faith and my religion,
Demolition. demolition. demolition.
And well buy up the towns,
And well knock em all down
Build a brand new world of our own.
(repeat)

Hear God's Call!

Love is the meaning we're alive!
Love shares so others may survive!
Love cares for this world, lost souls and all!
So it lives to hear God's call!
Love lifts the spirits just to bless!
Love's gifts grant more than happiness!
They won't make us sinners doomed to fall!
For love lives to hear God's call!
Any wisdom love learns pure gold
That's meant not just for one to hold!
Love's like a kiss upon your lips!
Love's touch is more than fingertips!
Yet love's sure, here's the first great truth of all!
So love lives to hear God's call!

One For Her

She longs for peace so much
That a thatched cottage appears
Round her when she sleeps.
Snowbound, a resting place for a man
Who desires small candles
And the wafts of incense
Over the dragons of his day.

Comforting words are plied as though
As natural as autonomic breath:
'See me, I love; hear me, I love.'
It is the rejoicing of an overbearing day
To stay by her side.
And the moon sighs softly.
And the gentle flakes fall.
