Truth is the silliest thing under the sun. Try to get a living by the Truth and go to the Soup Societies. Heavens! Let any clergyman try to preach the Truth from its very stronghold, the pulpit, and they would ride him out of his church on his own pulpit bannister.

A revival does two things. First, it returns the Church from her backsliding and second, it causes the conversion of men and women; and it always includes the conviction of sin on the part of the Church. What a spell the devil seems to cast over the Church today!

In the Great Metropolis

Each for himself is still the rule
We learn it when we go to school
The devil take the hindmost, O!

And when the schoolboys grow to men,
In life they learn it o’er again
The devil take the hindmost, O!

For in the church, and at the bar,
On ’Change, at court, where’er they are,
The devil takes the hindmost, O!

Husband for husband, wife for wife,
Are careful that in married life
The devil takes the hindmost, O!

From youth to age, whate’er the game,
The unvarying practice is the same
The devil take the hindmost, O!

And after death, we do not know,
But scarce can doubt, where’er we go,
The devil takes the hindmost, O!

Ti rol de rol, ti rol de ro,
The devil take the hindmost, O!

In Church

I love the church: its labara,
its silver vessels, its candleholders,
the lights, the ikons, the pulpit.

Whenever I go there, into a church of the Greeks,
with its aroma of incense,
its liturgical chanting and harmony,
the majestic presence of the priests,
dazzling in their ornate vestments,
the solemn rhythm of their gestures-
my thoughts turn to the great glories of our race,
to the splendor of our Byzantine heritage.

I Went To Church Today

i went to church today
and as it is customary
at dawn
a sacrifice so to say
for advent's sake

i join in the singing of
the hymns
i sit and stand and kneel
i recite my prayers
on paper
i look at the pulpit
and listen to the
priest saying the homily
i sit and stand and kneel

i look around the corners
i follow the lines of the pillars
i look at the center of this
church majestic in its
art and architecture
i look at the corners
and at the seats filled with
my own people

i was looking for the face
of God
his shadow even
is not there anymore.

The Southern Pulpit

The Southern pulpit, in our eyes,
Descends to make a compromise
With evil things in heaven's name;
The kind that brings a blush of shame.

The evils to the Negro shown,
His rights that Southern men disown,
We view with sorrow and distress,
Its lack of effort to suppress.

Prevailing thought it cannot cross,
If so, it feels financial loss;
The gold to it is dearer far,
Than all the rights of Negroes are.

It preached that slavery was right,
Upon the Scripture based its fight,
Why should we now expect a change
So radical? Such would be strange.

This pulpit fails to higher climb
Than sentiment at any time.
Such grades of preaching cannot live,
The truth alone can freedom give.

That Which Is Visible

Not to see that which is visible,
But to worship that to idolize with symbols...
In beliefs that ruin the lives of others,
Is as demonic as it is to create wars...
With the intention to feed one's greed.
And to do it as if it is sacred.
And those taking positions against this...
Were diminished in appearance to look as if weak.

'The first time I hear the name Lucifer,
I was a child and sitting in a church.
To learn all I needed to know about 'sin'.
And to discover those who were doing it,
Around me.
And the one standing behind the pulpit,
Advocating the awareness...
In a very heated delivery to demonstrate.

Yes...
The first time I heard of evil,
I saw it done first in a church,
Where people were taught to fear.
But not cease from their practicing of evils.'

From The Pulpit To The Pew

Fill us with your power Lord, from the pulpit to the pew,
Reach down and touch all of those whom you foreknew.

Move back into our hearts Lord and push all our wills aside,
Allow The Spirit to take over, as He's the One who lives inside.

Thank you for The Holy Spirit Lord, who you sent down from above,
Let Him speak to our hearts about Christ's compassion and His Love.

Please Lord, as a church put us back on that narrow but right track,
And forgive us for knowing so much, while we simply turn our back.

The power to change everyone is in The Word and in your name,
We need to share The Word, as many are ignorant of God, to our shame.

Please change our shame into examples, like those you once did send,
Help us to reach out with boldness Lord, to our family and a friend.

You saved us for this purpose Lord, at the moment of our salvation,
To go out and preach The Gospel to every person, tribe, and nation.

The early church made such an impact with this single state of mind,
Christ's return was so real; they dare not leave anyone left behind.

Please wake us out of our slumber, for a world that's truly in need,
For His coming is now nearer then when we first heard and believed.

So please reach down and touch us Lord, all whom you foreknew.
We need your power for this purpose Lord, from the pulpit to the pew.

Lost Soul To An Angel....

I am a devil who
lost his soul to an angel

Pretty face with pretty eyes
Devil I am, all dark inside
Saw you once or maybe twice
Lost my ways and I cannot hide
whenever you look at me,
I lose my mind

I am a devil who
lost his soul to an angel
I am a rebel who
lost his cause to a lover

You saved me from myself
you promised me salvation
through your Love
I promise, I will not leave you to
someone else

Now I wait for your invite
to be on your side,
under bright light,
where you might,
take me inside,
inside your church of love
give me a another chance
(so) I can prove
that..

I am a devil who
lost his soul to an angel
I am a rebel who
lost his cause to a lover

I am a devil who
lost his soul to an angel
I am a devil who
lost his soul to an angel

Some Have Steeples. Some Don't

What do I think of church?

'Yes! '

Church?
Like in 'church' church?

'Yes! '

Well...
Some have steeples.
Some don't.
Some have people.
Some wont.

Some are religiously political.
And some are politically religious.

My vehicle is my church.
And that's all I care about.

'Oh?
So your 'car' is your church? '

Oh.
No no!
My 'body' is my church.
It is my sanctuary.

Now...
Keep in mind,
I am not devoted to keep it as pure,
As it should be.
But I do the best I can,
Not to be led away by temptation.

But everyday I pray to be forgiven,
Of those 'sins' I know I should not enjoy!
However...
You can find me anytime,
Self righteously defending...
My point of view.

Church Bells Ring

The church bells ring merrily
their wake up call
for all those sinner to repent
the sins they committed all week.
In their Sunday best
looking smartly dressed,
they amble down to the church
and take their place on a pew.
After several hymns they sing,
the minister gives his address
of how the evils of the world
are creeping up on all of us.
How we must be always wary
in everything we do
as the devil is always waiting
just to ensnare you.
More prayers and hymns follow
and then they are on their way.
However, did they learning anything
while they were at church today,
sadly for a lot
what was said went in one ear
and went out the other,
for during the week
they follow the same path
and go about sinning again.

Church Of Desire

(sambora)
Woke up in a cold sweat
In the middle of the night
Seems like a lifetime
When youre wondering whos wrong or right
One confession would resurrect the truth
Revenge or forgiveness for sins between me and you
Now we dance with the devil down lonely
Street, lonely street
Looking for a window in the house of tears
Living in hell, I pray the rain disappears
Im headed for a breakdown
And the fever runs higher
As I kneel at the altar I can feel your fire
In the church of desire
Church of desire
You never find a reason why love falls from grace
Some kind of voodoo, like a spirit you cant embrace
Theres a voice in the mirror, and a ghost in my heart
That relives the passion before we were torn apart
Now we dance with the devil down lonely
Street, lonely street
Looking for a window in the house of tears
Living in hell, I pray the rain disappears
Im headed for a breakdown
And the fever runs higher
As I kneel at the altar I can feel your fire
In the church of desire
Church of desire
Now we dance with the devil down lonely
Street, lonely street
Looking for a window in the house of tears
Living in hell, I pray the rain disappears
Im headed for a breakdown
And the fever runs higher
As I kneel at the altar I can feel your fire
In the church of desire
Church of desire

Mea Culpa'd

Crusades, blood libels, inquisitions and conversions that were forced,
indifference to the blood of helpless Jews spilt in the holocaust,
a litany of crimes for which the Pope should use his bully pulpit,
and yet equivocates while in denial, hardly mea culpa’d,
will be forgotten soon, because the mantra never to forget
itself will be forgotten and the crimes of Nazi will be set
aside, diminished in importance by great other acts of genocide
and claims they never happened to six million, and the Jews just lied.

Pope John Paul II has expressed condemnation regarding the acts of the Church against the Jews but has failed to admit that the responsibility was not that of individual Catholics but of the Church. Furthermore, he maintains an eerie silence about the passive role that the Church as a whole, as Pope Pius XII in particular (whom he wishes to canonize) played during the Holocaust.

I wrote the first quatrain on 3/14/00 and the second on 2/10/-0, compiling my poems on the Shoah.

William Blake

The Little Vagabond

Dear mother, dear mother, the Church is cold;
But the Alehouse is healthy, and pleasant, and warm.
Besides, I can tell where I am used well;
Such usage in heaven will never do well.

But, if at the Church they would give us some ale,
And a pleasant fire our souls to regale,
We’d sing and we’d pray all the livelong day,
Nor ever once wish from the Church to stray.

Then the Parson might preach, and drink, and sing,
And we’d be as happy as birds in the spring;
And modest Dame Lurch, who is always at church,
Would not have bandy children, nor fasting, nor birch.

And God, like a father, rejoicing to see
His children as pleasant and happy as He,
Would have no more quarrel with the Devil or the barrel,
But kiss him, and give him both drink and apparel.

Climb That Mountain High

(don schlitz/reba mcentire)
Red sun a-rising, over the hill
Ive had enough of this desert to last from now until
Im tired of living day-to-day and hand-to-mouth
This could be the day I finally find my way out
Chorus:
Im gonna climb that mountain high
Im gonna see whats on the other side
Im gonna kiss this town good-bye
Im gonna climb that mountain
How I arrived here, heaven only knows
Seems more like the kind of place the devil wouldve chose
To spend my life here, is more than I can do
I know somewhere down the road my dream will come true
Repeat chorus
If I stay here forever
What will I have to show
But if I make it over
Then everyone will know
Im gonna climb that mountain high
Repeat chorus

What Is It that I Seek

Could I announce from a pulpit,
Travesties I disdain?
Within my consciousness that remains.
To inflict my personal conflicts...
With a revealing of my own insecurities,
I can not shake.
Why do I have a need from a pulpit,
To announce this to berate in a scolding.
And to what desired effect?

There has to be 'something' within me,
I have not been able to face.
There has to be 'something' within me,
An honesty has not graced...
That permits a self examination,
To thoroughly erase.

And what is it that I seek...
To continue to punish others,
For those mistakes I've made?
Is it my own acceptance?
Or my deceptions...
That will not from me go away.
And I need the assurance I am protected,
By my own creation.
