September Chill.

Uncle brings in the dead chicken by
The neck and begins plucking out the
Feathers with a skill that fascinates
Your 10 year old eyes and as you stand
And watch the chicken gradually becomes
Nude and some how not so grand not so
Chicken-like and then Uncle cuts off the
Head and throws it a side and then guts
It and washes it through with water and
Then puts it down on a large plate where
It lays in a solemn silence without fanfare
Or hymns or prayers just Uncle lighting up
A cigarette and you staring at the chicken
Clean and pure and still and from the open
Window a cool evening late September chill.

Crow Black Chicken

(laurence wilson)
Well, I went on the mountain
And I gave my horn a blow
Thought I heard some purty gal say
Yonder come my beau
Crow black chicken and crow for a day
Crow black chicken and fly away
Crow black chicken and-a ...
I like chicken pie
Well, the hardest work that ever I done
Is plowin a field of rye
The easiest work that ever I done
Was eatin chicken pie
Chicken crow for midnight
And chicken crow for a day
Along come an owl, lord, have mercy
And stole my chicken away

Finding feathers

I went through a stage of finding feathers
but I just thought they came from some Bird
then someone told me they come from Angels
at which I replied don't be so absurd.
I found them when I was just out walking
in the country or down the local street
they would appear from out of the Blue
and land in front of me or by my feet.
But bird's feathers are common in the outdoors
so I ignored them and didn't pick them up
but I then started to get them in strange places
like in my pocket, and once even in my favourite cup.
They seemed to appear most when I was feeling down
as if it was a sign that good times were ahead
so I would stop worrying and being miserable
and there would be a feather on my pillow on the bed.
So if you find a feather don't throw it away
or think it's from a Pigeon, or a Turtle Dove,
because you may have just received a visit
not from a Bird but someone from up above.

A Chicken's Life

we watch it from the beginning
an egg, plus days
hatching into a chick
seeing the first light
of the bulb
and the hen pushes
each chick into
the ground to feed
by themselves
until some feathers grow
beaks and claws
now we view a full grown
chicken,

at least, i am not talking
about a coward, do you understand?

do not, please,
chicken out from life's bitter days
we were babies
not chicks

Ode to Chickens

An Ode to Chickens

Oh chicken, oh chicken,

With orange little feet,

All white and fluffy,

So good to eat,

Oh chicken, oh chicken,

I will get you so fat,

Then I will kill you,

And eat you at last

Late Night with Fog and Horses

They were in the living room. Saying their
goodbyes. Loss ringing in their ears.
They'd been through a lot together, but now
they couldn't go another step. Besides, for him
there was someone else. Tears were falling
when a horse stepped out of the fog
into the front yard. Then another, and
another. She went outside and said,
'Where did you come from, you sweet horses?'
and moved in amongst them, weeping,
touching their flanks. The horses began
to graze in the front yard.
He made two calls: one call went straight
to he sheriff - 'someone's horses are out.'
But there was that other call, too.
Then he joined his wife in the front
yard, where they talked and murmured
to the horses together. (Whatever was
happening now was happening in another time.)
Horses cropped the grass in the yard
that night. A red emergency light
flashed as a sedan crept in out of fog.
Voices carried out of the fog.
At the end of that long night,
when they finally put their arms around
each other, their embrace was full of
passion and memory. Each recalled
the other's youth. Now something had ended,
something else rushing in to take its place.
Came the moment of leave-taking itself.
'Goodbye, go on,' she said.
And then pulling away.
Much later,
he remembered making a disastrous phone call.
One that had hung on and hung on,
a malediction. It's boiled down
to that. The rest of his life.
Malediction.

Ode To Orange Chgicken

Orange chicken, oh orange chicken,
how much I love you.

You're sweet, sticky, and tangy, all at the same time,
you go great wi th soy sauce, but never with lime.

ode to orange chicken, which I love to devour,
it's been in my mouth so often, it knows that i have power.

It knows the names of my taste buds, Jill, Lil, and Bill,
sometimes the orange chicken is happy, but sometimes it's held against it's will.

Whenever I eat orange chicken, it goes CRUNCH, CRUNCH,
and I have to have chow mein, and that goes MUCH, MUNCH!

Ode to orange chicken, it is always in a bowl,
but did I mention, i also love eggrolls.

Feathers!

feathers on me
again and again
first to fly and now to earth rest
enable me to get ready
and carried me through you
anywhere there are feathers
like you said!
in me in you!

a very strange and intoxicating feeling
afterwards, that you traced my body
maybe i have gasp, of some lack of air!
in high feather, full feathers
you will be writhing with ecstacy
Very pleasurable for me
I feel extremely good
you make me a path a invisible way

eagle feathers very powerful
sound bird feathers very delicate
for tight places or open places
make his sound so soft
Ah! My God! ! !
give me the name of that medicine!
Feathers on me!
Feathers on you!

Chicken Hearted

(bill justis)
My girlfriend slipped and fell
Now she's hanging from a cliff
I can't come to her rescue
But these flowers i must sniff
You see i'd really like to save her
But i aint got the nerve
I'm chicken hearted
I'm chicken hearted
I'm tryin' to kiss my girl
And it makes me want to faint
I'm scared of my own shadow
And afraid of what i ain't
I've no inspiration
I'm kinda yellow...
I'm chicken hearted,
I'm chicken hearted
Mama's in the workshop
Daddy's in the jail
I seem to be afraid
To go to work and make their bail
I guess my folks will have to stay there
Cos i'm just like a snail
I'm chicken hearted,
I'm chicken hearted

Throw It All Away

How could you
Just hurt me
And leave me
(leave me all alone)
How could you destroy my life
How could you throw it all away
What made you
Desert me and deceive me
Why did you just let me down
How could you throw it all away
How could you throw...
How could you throw it all away
Throw it all away
When I gave my all, baby
How could you throw it all away
And I gave my all
How could you throw
How could you throw it all away
Throw it all away
You destroyed my life, baby
How could you throw it all way
How could you
Just lead me
Into thinking
(thinking you would be there)
How could you destroy my heart
How could you throw it all away
I love you
Believe you
And I trusted you
(put all my trust in you)
How could you just let me down
How could you throw it all way
How could you throw
How could you throw it all away
Girl how could you
Throw it all away
How could you just take it all
How could you throw it all away
Oh how could you throw
How could you throw it all away
Throw it all
Throw it all away
When I gave my love
How could you throw it all away
I love you girl
You love me so
Where did we go wrong
I know that i
Gave my all to you
But somehow that wasnt good enough
How could you throw it away
How could you throw it all away
How
Throw it all away
How could you destroy my life baby
How could you throw it all away
How could you throw it all away
How could you throw
How could you throw it all away
How could you throw it all away
Throw it all away
When I gave my all baby
How could you throw it all away
Oh, how could you throw
How could you throw it all away
Throw it all
Throw it all away
How could you destroy my life
How could you throw it all away
Oh, girl I will
How could you throw it all away
Always love you
How could you throw it all away
Forever and ever
How could you throw it all away

Where I Come From

Well I was rollin wheels and shiftin gears
round that jersey turnpike
When barney stopped me with his gun
Ten minutes after midnight
Said sir you broke the limit in this rusty ol truck
I dont know about that accent son
Just where did you come from
I said where I come from
Its cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta front porch sitiin
Where I come from tryin to make a livin
And workin hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
Well I was south of detroit city
I pulled in this country kitchen
To try their brand of barbecue
The sign said finger-lickin
Well I paid the tab and the lady aked me
Howd you like my biscuit
Ill be honest with you maam
It aint like mama fixed it
Cause where I come from
Its cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta front porch pickin
Where I come from tryin to make a livin
And workin hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
I was chasin sun on 101
Somewhere around ventura
I lost a universal joint and I had to use my finger
This tall lady stopped and asked
If I had plans for dinner
Said no thanks maam, back home
We like the girls that sing soprano
Cause where I come from
Its cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta front porch sitiin
Where I come from tryin to make a livin
And workin hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
Well I was headed home on 65
Somewhere around kentucky
The cb rang for a bobtail rig
Thats rollin on like thunder
Well I answered him and he asked me
Arent you from out in tulsa
No, but you mighta seen me there
I just dropped a load of salsa
Where I come from its cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta front porch pickin
Where I come from tryin to make a livin
Workin hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
Where I come from yeah its cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta back porch pickin
Where I come from tryin to make a livin
Workin hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
Yeah where I come from
A lotta front porch sitiin
Starin up at heaven
Where I come from
Where I come from
Tryin to make a livin
Tryin to make a livin
Oh, where I come from
Where I come from
Yeah where I come from
Get back down there sometimes
Where I come from

Tender Buttons [Chicken]

CHICKEN.

Pheasant and chicken, chicken is a peculiar third.

CHICKEN.

Alas a dirty word, alas a dirty third alas a dirty third, alas a dirty bird.

CHICKEN.

Alas a doubt in case of more go to say what it is cress. What is it. Mean. Why. Potato. Loaves.

CHICKEN.

Stick stick call then, stick stick sticking, sticking with a chicken. Sticking in a extra succession, sticking in.

A Curse Against Elegies

Oh, love, why do we argue like this?
I am tired of all your pious talk.
Also, I am tired of all the dead.
They refuse to listen,
so leave them alone.
Take your foot out of the graveyard,
they are busy being dead.

Everyone was always to blame:
the last empty fifth of booze,
the rusty nails and chicken feathers
that stuck in the mud on the back doorstep,
the worms that lived under the cat's ear
and the thin-lipped preacher
who refused to call
except once on a flea-ridden day
when he came scuffing in through the yard
looking for a scapegoat.
I hid in the kitchen under the ragbag.

I refuse to remember the dead.
And the dead are bored with the whole thing.
But you - you go ahead,
go on, go on back down
into the graveyard,
lie down where you think their faces are;
talk back to your old bad dreams.

Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road

The chicken was undecided on whether to cross the road,
she was a short sighted chicken
who, not being able to see across the road
couldn't quite understand the advantages
of being on the other side.

People passing by the chicken
stopped to ask if she wanted to get across the road
but the chicken just clucked, indecisively,
looking very concerned as to her own
demise if she should attempt to.

After all, should she transverse the road
and avoid oncoming vehicles
she would then be stuck on the other side
but should she not, then she may well
feel unfulfilled, unaccomplished.

Not wanting to disappoint,
let down, or cause a disturbance
the chicken did a little shake,
a little flutter and hop, skipped
and jumped across the road.

A local lorry came hurtling towards her,
she saw the headlights, heard the horn
but too late! There were chicken bits
all over the place while a local
reporter took notes, writing:

We'll never know why the chicken
tried to cross that road in heavy traffic
but she was pronounced dead
on arrival at the local hospital.
They'll be no live chicken tonight.

In Front Of Me

It's hard to breathe, from underneath
Smothering in all your heat
It's hard to take, It's tough to break
So I don't make the same mistakes
The same mistake, (4x)
Out in the yard is where I play,
Don't come in cause I'm afraid
You saw my face, I faced my friends
Do I tell or just pretend?
I found a friend, a friend who knows
Who says he'll help but then he goes
And then he goes (4x)
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
I'm in the way, the way it goes, so go away, yeah, yeah
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
Fingernails, filled with dirt
If you don't tell, you don't get hurt
I cry for help, I pray to God
Another tear he tries to rob
To rob me of, my dignity
Cause sanctuary's far from me
Far from me (4x)
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
I'm in the way, the way it goes, so go away, yeah, yeah
It's hard to take, a piece of me, so peacefully, yeah, yeah
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
So broke inside, don't run away
And find another place to stay
And make our inhibition go away
Because I'm so afraid, yeah, yeah
It's hard to breathe, from underneath
Smothering in all your heat
It's hard to take, It's tough to break
So I don't make the same mistakes
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
I'm in the way, the way it goes, so go away, yeah, yeah
It's hard to take, a piece of me, so peacefully, yeah, yeah
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah

Chicken Pot Pie

When we were young, bernies deli was down the block
(ooh ooh ooh ooh)
He made a great liver pate
(you know he did, you know he did, you know he did)
But if theres one thing in this world that I like better
Than a corned beef on rye
Its chicken pot pie
Chicken pot pie
