I like to play dark, offbeat, quirky characters.

Offbeat
Offbeat but a rhythm keeps,
Doing what it should.
With a doing that it could be...
Offbeat,
But a rhythm keeps...
Offbeat.
Offbeat but a rhythm keeps,
Doing what it should.
With a doing that it could be...
Offbeat,
But a rhythm keeps.
Unblocked or not stopped to do,
A patting of one's feet to...
Seal them in their seats.
And,
This is...
Offbeat.
Offbeat but a rhythm keeps,
Seeking to reach plateaus...
Offbeat.
Offbeat but a rhythm keeps,
Doing what it should.
With a doing that it could be...
Offbeat,
But a rhythm keeps...
Offbeat.
Offbeat but a rhythm keeps,
Doing what it should.
With a doing that it could be...
Offbeat,

Offbeat.
But a rhythm keeps,
Seeking to reach plateaus...
Offbeat.
But a rhythm keeps.
Offbeat but a rhythm keeps,

With a doing that it could be...
Offbeat,
But a rhythm keeps,

Offbeat.
But a rhythm keeps,
Seeking to reach plateaus...
Offbeat.
But a rhythm keeps.

I'm not a huge fan of romantic comedies - my taste goes much more to the offbeat and dark. I'd love to sink my teeth into something like "Fargo".

You can time a part perfectly and play it badly. And some people have very individual offbeat timing, which is their own. It works simply because they are who they are.

Acting is an art form and you want to take roles that are challenged and it's more of a challenge I think to play dark characters. Not that I want to always play those, but it is a challenge and challenges are rewarding and fun.

I think that there's an awakening inside of me really honestly, and I honestly believe that the best work of my life is about to happen. I'm finding a balance in myself as an artist from the external and the internal, and so as a result the characters I play are going to be quite different. So what's going to happen is that it's going to lift up the characters I play, we're going to start to see it and I think it's going to change the face of my career.

Before there was any talk of a movie, people would sometimes ask me what actors I would imagine playing these characters. And the only thing I could ever say is: I have such a clear idea of these characters that they'd have to play themselves.

People say that to me and I think what unites all my characters is that they are hurt; it's most accurate to say I play characters that are hurt but are responding to their environment.

Part of the success of the show is that the audience sees themselves in the characters, becomes the characters. The more they inhabit the characters, the more they see.

I think it's definitely beneficial for these characters to have good acting voices behind them and it affects the characters in a way that people can feel like they're part of the game and that they know these characters.

It's a funny show. The characters are surprisingly likable, given how ugly they are. We've got this huge cast of characters that we can move around. And over the last few seasons, we've explored some of the secondary characters' personal lives a bit more.

I don't think you can discriminate against budgets, you know? I'm an actor, I guess, so I'm just trying to play as many characters as I can. If there's a character I think I can play, and they're going to let me do it, I'll do it whether it's $10 or $1 million or more.

I mean we all played as kids. You play games, you take on different characters, you imitate; the fun and the love of play has never left me.

I know some things when I start. I know, let's say, that the play is going to be a 1970s or a 1930s play, and it's going to be about a piano, but that's it. I slowly discover who the characters are as I go along.

My play Safe Sex was picked apart because critics thought it was untrue. It was a play in which no one had AIDS, but the characters talked about how it was going to change their lives.

Yeah, I've always been accused of having a sense of mischief and I'm very flattered that you say you can see it in the roles I play, because I think that's important, even if I do play intense characters, like especially Christine Cagney.

There is something about the Australian psyche that seems to like films that are slightly offbeat.
Mitch and I have known each other for such a long time, and we're both so pleased to be given this opportunity at this point in our lives to play characters that we've never really had a chance to play before. It's a great gift. Plus we're wise enough to appreciate it.

I've always chosen incredibly different roles and things that are quite offbeat. That way you're not limited.

Dark Servant
I wish the moonlight away
In the dark with thee I wish to play
Like stars in the dark night
None shall see we for many years
Behind many tears
We will be out of sight
In the dark our truth see
In the dark where souls be
In the dark love laden
The dark shy sweet maiden..
Her poetic fervent
my dark servant

I don't think of myself as offbeat and weird. As a kid, I saw myself as the type of guy who would run into a burning building to save the baby.
